p.3 #1 · What Are Some Reactions You've Gotten When Shooting With A White Lens?

I hate it when people stop to not block my shot. Seriously, I'm a professional i want you to walk in my way. Apparently Japanese people are good about this and actually ignore you.

People that compare their point and shoots that have 7 mp with my old digital rebel. I'd point at a pile of poo and say, I don't care how much crap you have, no matter what, it's still crap.

And people seem to hit on me more when I'm walking around w/ my camera. Girls seem to like grabbing my butt or something.

Though, I'm still young, I guess that's why I can be a dick and still get chicks.

Enjoy that as much as you can for as long as you can... believe me, it's much more important than anything you can do with a camera!

Bunch of school kids and their teachers at a zoo wanted me to take their group picture because they "wanted to be in the newspaper". A bit difficult to get everyone in the shot with a 300IS so all I got was an eyeball but it made them happy.

I don't usully get direct comments, but alot of pepole look and straire.

The most amusing time was when I was using my 100-400 on my 20D, this guy was using a small P&S, he saw my walking towards him, he then just stoped and his eyes were like then he looked down at his P&S and had that sad disappointed look

I also hear alot of comments like, "wow look how big that lens is", and "quick dear out of the way the professional wants to take some photos" (A good way to get the good spots! ). Or "I think he must work for the papers"
Also at college I get alot of comments from other students like: Wow thats a huge lens.

I just got a 17-40 L which really may not be all that big in comparison to some lenses, but that combined with the 300D with Grip and a 540EZ definetly looks like one mad huge camera setup.

I will be heading home to a small town in Manitoba tomorrow where im sure i will get a few comments to add to this post in a hurry.. haha.

Funny this thread came up. I was at the zoo a few weeks ago, and had many of the common comments with my MK2 and 300/2.8. I lost it however with this one...

I'm tucked in a corner watching the Gorillas, and all the sudden I hear, in this amazingly sultry voice..."Oooo, he's got a real nice, big one!" As hard as I tried to maintain it, I turn around to the woman and just flat out lost it laughing right at the moment she realized what she just said. It was priceless watching her turn the nicest shade of crimson. That was probably the best encounter in 20+ years of shooting.

Got called a papparazzi with the 100-400 at some local softball games when shooting for a friend's team.

More unusual was when I was shooting a reception with a Rebel XT with a 24-85 USM and someone commented that my lens was huge.

I've had people think I'm a newspaper shooter. a 20D plus grip and even an old magic drainpipe is enough to do the trick. even my 24-70 will get looks

I too have had people "escort" me to the front of the line to the press section at racing events, etc. nice!

I can always confuse the amateurs... I'll just put on a lensbaby or my pinhole lens...

when the digicam folks ask "how much zoom do you have" I'll just say "about thirty or fourty times optical with my collection"

funny, 15 years ago everyone had a film SLR and no one stared at you. but now... how times have changed!

now you see kids holding their cameras in front of their face, waiting 10 or 20 seconds and 5 tries to get focus, and their wee little flash goes off, and you can see the redeye and camera shake without the digital preview! is this progress? maybe not...

I havent really been out with my 70-200L 2.8, but when shooting a couple basketball games you definetly get the stares! Last year i was shooting a basketball game for my former high school with20D 24-85 and 420EX...i think the flash also adds some to the reactions...but some dad for one of the opposite teams players told me he would pay me to take some shots of his kid...i declined numerous times and he kept hasseling me...i guess thats the price you pay, i would have taken him up on the offer now but was in no position a year ago to charge lol.

Its definetly size not color...the white i think just let other shooterrs know u have a canon lol, the tourist have no clue otherwise, they just think its big, i like it when people think the lens is cheap because its white! haha. i have had one person ask why i didnt have a black lens(to him black was more associated with professional) haha. I guess it takes all kinds!

p.3 #12 · What Are Some Reactions You've Gotten When Shooting With A White Lens?

Once when I was looking at the moon through my telescope in my apartment complex parking lot, I had someone stop to ask me what I was taking pictures of? Hmm... well this isn't a camera but it doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out my "camera" is pointed directly at that huge white ball in the sky.

This past summer I was taking macro flower photos on a sidewalk here in Izmir, and people were stopping to gawk at the idiot up in the bushes with a camera, ring flash, angle finder, and cable release. I would have been less conspicuous in a haz-mat suit.

But the most looks I get are when I am out shooting panos. People try to get out of the way, but how do you explain the fisheye lens coverage to someone who doesn't speak English (and I speak very little Turkish)? Also people come ask me what I am doing, but then how do I again explain that I am taking fisheye photos in a 360° arc to be assembled on a computer to create a full spherical photograph? Sometimes I don't even understand it myself!

One of my biggest annoyances was shooting in a historic building on a tripod. A family comes in and the kids instantly break into a dead run. One of the adorable little rats hooks his foot into my tripod leg and only by the thinnest luck did I grab the camera strap before the whole rig smashed down onto the marble floor. I shot a look at the parents and the mother just replied that maybe I picked the wrong location to set up!

I thought I was going to blow a gasket on that one. Sorry for setting up my camera in your herd's path ma'am. No need to control your rodents in a public venue whatsoever. My deepest apologies...

Yeah... I guess I am still bitter about that one.

I agree its all size and not colour. Petal hoods attract serious attention too I reckon.

Best I've had was at a restaurant; had the camera on the table; pretty waitress comes around to take the order and goes "Wow, thats a serious piece of equipment", decided to have a laugh...stared at her for a moment gazingly and then "Oh, the camera"

:P

Just some are:

1) Do you have a license for that? (What? )
2) Wow you mush be able to ants with that! (Duh! )
3) Wow, are you a photographer? (Another Duh! )

and other such crap...

Of course, they think they are very funny, and they are the only ones to ever come out with this 'witty'

Really a great thread some very great laughs

Only having a 70-200 I still get comments and questions. Many times who are you shoting for, what paper are you from and stuff like that. Take my picture I want to be in the paper.

Also get alot of long looks from people passing by. Often ppl stop and wait to pass or duck.

At big events its often great with the huge lense since ppl tend to just move a bit so you can get the good spot. Often its possible to wandre to the front row through lots of ppl tip toeing to se anything.

Also got some lame comments on the size from p&s ppl.

I've had exactly the same thing at the zoo on a few occasions... even when I was using the 300D with a 70-200/4L, funny thing was though, it happened once and then about 2 minutes later there was a guy standing next to me with a 1ds2 and a 70-200/2.8is so it was me with the downcast look
