p.19 #1 · What Are Some Reactions You've Gotten When Shooting With A White Lens?

I do get some people mentioning my gear/lens but nothing special. Well, untill Saturday...

I was ready to go after shooting a basketball game and winnig team photos and such and noticed the cheerleaders on the floor for a picture and a couple of mom's trying to get a picture with their point and shoot cameras. I saw it as a good photo op so I walked over and my 1D MKIIn was still on high speed continous.

I just held the camera over the cheerleaders and ripped off about 7 or 8 and they all just looked at me. At that point, I heard that I wished his were digital so I could see them. I proudy displayed the images...

Well, there you go. Tripods are now officially old-fashioned. I guess I missed the human-firmware update that lets one hold cameras perfectly still for several seconds.

i think that came in the same update which allows standing guys to hit the toilet without drops landing outside, after a sixpack, heh ;)

I'm saving for my first luxury lens. But even with my current gear, I'm asked all types of questions about who do I work for, is that hard, can you show me how...

I attend a lot of athletic events. Last week at a basketball "pack-the-house" fund-raiser, oops, somebody forgot to hire a photographer. One of the people I had talked to earlier who asked a lot of question about "what kinda camera is that and how much does that cost" was the athletic director; who ended up hiring me to take pictures of the event. I made some unexpected lens bucks for doing something I was doing just for the love of photography.

Can't wait to get my big mofo! On the actual subject, I'm going for either Canon 80-200 or Sigma 70-200 because I do prefer black. As a wedding/portrait shooter, I gotta keep moving. There isn't enough patience in my body to wait on an elk to turn the right way or to be still long enough for birds/animals to forget I'm there.

I've had a few comments which could be expected I guess as I only own one white lens, which is only the "entry" level white!

- Fellow photographers with the "check the lens" or "nice rig" or "that must get some nice snaps"

- I had one mother grab her kids and guide them out of my way telling them "get out of the way of the professional photo man"

- The most disturbing one was from a passing man ( I think he was semi famous ) with the comment "F****** pappanazi" I got the distinct feeling he does not like the papparazi one little bit!

In San Francisco (both SOMA) on Sunday:

Person 1) "Hey, what is that (me "20D"). Wow nice camera, I could tell from across the street."
Person 2) "You know, someone got killed for taking photos around here"

Apparently San Francisco broke its murder record last year or something.

The main stadiums have a policy of no lenses longer than 200mm allowed. :P

I wonder what they would do if you rocked up with a 200 f/1.8 L and a 2x tele on a 20D, giving an effective FL of over 600mm? It's within the rules.

The guys who make these rules at stadiums are complete wankers. Totally baseless and without thought bureacracy gone mad.

Yeah, later when I saw a 200mm 1.8L in a shop window, I thought the same thing Technically, they wouldn't be able to do anything about it since it is still a 200mm lens, despite being massive. Unfortunately, I'm sure they'd kick up a fuss. It doesn't break the rules though, so they shouldn't be able to stop anyone from using it

"How much did you pay for that Lens? You could have bought a Car for that!"

I say sympathetically; "Yeah, I know, but most Cars these days only come with an FD mount"

Soon shuts 'em up.

Just an observation -

Women tend to be rather vocal, even loud "Now THAT'S a LENS! shouted at me once...

Men tend to quietly wait a second after walking up to me, and ask their questions.

Just an observation......

The worst is when people I know ask "how much did that cost?". I don't really feel comfortable talking about it, even with friends. It only makes your car a target later. How do you respond to this one?

Jimmy, You didn't tell us the story about the attached photo.
How did you manage to take that photo of them?

There wasn't much consensus on how to respond to it, but that question was addressed in some detail much earlier in this thread if you want to look for it. Someone gave his answer (possibly paraphrased): "More than a good steak, but less than the steakhouse".

I don't like the question either. I'd like to come up with a good "How much is in your bank account right now?" riposte.

p.19 #18 · What Are Some Reactions You've Gotten When Shooting With A White Lens?

There have been many reactions, usually, "who are you shooting for"

Last weekend while shooting at a snocross race, we were looking at the race trailers with the platforms on top when a guy came out and asked if we wanted to shoot from on top of his trailer. We said sure and went on to talk about the fact we would need to go periodically run to the car to dump files on the laptop. He said bring it inside. They were hooked up to power, and the trailer was heated, so we used it for our "headquarters" for the day.

Good Shooting,
Marc

my d70 + sb800 + (any lens but the 50) combo gets some great reactions.

one time, i had my 105 mounted with an r72 filter on the front, so i had that mounted up on a tripod. i was adjusting the frame and checking my settings, and this HOT girl in rather.... "skimpy" clothes walked up and said, "i'm ready."

after a moment's stare, i swung the tripod around and told her to hold perfectly still.

...

it's my favorite infrared photo... EVAR.
