Jimmy, You didn't tell us the story about the attached photo.
How did you manage to take that photo of them?
There wasn't much story and what there was was in the first post. However, a little more detail....
I was shooting the Freshman Boys Basketball County Championship Game and besides shooting the action, I naturally took the team photo with the trophy and all the usual things you would expect like cutting down the net and such. I was done and they people were still around chatting and each mom with a digital camera wanted a picture of their kid with the trophy.
I had packed up and was leaving. I traveled light and had a small lowepro waist pack with the 85 and 135L plus an extra battery. I had my 1D MKIIn and the 35L attached on my shoulder. As I was walking out, I see the girls already posed and some cheer moms taking images.
I just went over and took my shots as well. The reason I posted in this thread was they were not expecting 8.5 FPS being ripped off. It is kinda hard to keep that quiet. They also ddn't realize my camera was digital and were suprised when I could show them the images.
Do note I work full time at the school and the students and parents know me. The also know I take sports pictures for the local weekly paper and for the school website. This year I already have posted 7000+ photos and provide images for a photo show for the sports banquets. I make mention of this as they wouldn't think I was some perv stepping in and taking a picture.

This is a bit off topic at first, but I assure you it does have a point.
It's amazing to think of how uneducated in photography I was, only four or five years ago. I was one of the poor souls who asked about things like how many X's on a given lens, and how much they cost. Just thinking about the questions I asked makes me feel like a bit of a fool.
Not having much access to professional photographers, or even photo classes, in rural Newfoundland, most of my later knowledge came solely from books . I got lucky though, and one summer I worked as part-time Innkeep at an Inn next to a lighthouse. With all the photographers taking shots of the lighthouse, I managed to get some great advice and have a quite a few questions answered. One of those photographers is actually responsible for me finding this forum (Thanks to whoever you were, if you're reading this).
I have to say that that was a memorable summer, I've even seen shots of the same lighthouse on the pages of other FM'ers. Although I'm still not a pro, the advice I was given put me another step in the right direction.
But back to the point, I'd have to say it was most definitely the people toting around the white glass and other long lenses that I found the most helpful (or for that matter, the most willing to go out of their way to answer my questions in the first place). So, I'd like to give a big thanks to all you who take the time to answer the questions of other amateurs like myself, and assure the rest of you that some good can come of it. Thanks.

I was taking shots with my 20D w/ Grip & 70-200 f/4L + 1.4x. A group of teenagers in punk/goth clothing walk bye behind me and the girl in the group shouts in an excited tone:
"Look at that! I want one of those so bad! One of these days I'm going to get a good film camera so I can take kick-ass pictures like him. All I've got is this stupid digital."
By the time I realizd she was talking about me they were already a few feet past me .

Another comment was I got was while I was shooting by the harbour after just getting my 350D... A group of girls looked at me while walking past me and one shouted out, "Hey, take MY photo!". Oddly enough, it was with the kit lens! I'm thinking that people are so used to seeing people take photos with tiny cameras held at arms length that holding a not-so-small camera up to your eye makes you stand out :P.
Second that I have a 300D with the kit lens and I have had comments. It's just that everyone has gotten used to credit card sized cameras. 5 years ago if you pulled out a camera the size of a credit card it would have been like "wow how many time digtal zoom?!"

Sweet thread.
Me: at the race track, Nikon D2H with Sigma 70-200 F2.8
A drivers wife walks up with a digital rebel kit and says "Nice setup, wish I had something like that"
Me: "thanks, but you should see the sweet L glass that they make to fit your camera. you do know that the 600 F4 L IS that the guy on turn 5 is using would go right on your camera, right?"
You should have seen her eyes light up, I think she was expecting me to be a nose in the air Nikon guy, I didn't tell her that I still have my Cannon film rig. I never understoud the brand snob deal, don't get me wrong, I love to joke about it with pros, but I make it clear that I am joking, and I never do it with someone who looks like they would take it too seriously.
