That's funny.
My favorite thing is to go walking through the local State Park with my Tamrac Expedition 5 (somewhat fat back pack) then pull out my silver XT with a 35mm 2.0 and watch the let-down in people's faces.

I also witnessed a similar thing except it was a dolphin. I was up in Sharkbay (Western Australia) at Monkey mia (Famous for the dolphins) and there was a mother Dolphin and a Calf that had come to the beach in the late afternoon. The rangers are usully there during the day, but they go home at 5pm.
Anyways a few backpackers decided to get some close ups with there P&S cameras, They kept following the 2 Dolphins along the beach (Tide was out so the water levels were pritty low) in the meantime I was walking along the beach with my 70-200 and I was watching as the mother dolphin was starting to get really pissed off and trying to protect the calf, anyways these backpackers kept following the dolphins for about 30 odd mins (Until sunset) and in the meantime the mother dolphin was getting more and more angry and splashing the water around with its tail, Of course these backpackers thought it was great so more of them joined in too (They were on the beach watching) I was just waiting for the dolphin to slap one of them, but eventually the 2 dolphins got back into the deeper water and swam out to sea.

Just read this whole thread. I've gotten most of the comments I've read. My favorite one was when someone was looking at my 20D w/Grip, 24-70 and 500EX:
I didn't think anyone still used those old camera's anymore!

I'd either:
1) Stare at them as if they're a moron and I'm beyond reproach until they get scared and skitter away.
2) I'd tell them polite, "If I wanted to speak to a moron, I'd talk first."
3) "I didn't buy a Nikon because I wanted something dependable."
4) Laugh really hard and then stop suddenly and ignore them.
5) "Hahaha, no one buys that old junk any more! When did you say you were born?"
6) "Which Nikon do you feel is better than this?" expected answer: "F". "Hahaha"
7) "Because i buy only the best."
8) "I don't like being laughed at by the other photographers."
9) "I prefer great image quality."
i should stop here. as much as i respect nikon, i disrespect fanboys, and would cheerfully lie just to see their face.

But the funniest is when you're taking pics of a building or something, and when you turn around you suddenly see six or seven tourists waiting, all with their p&s ready to take exactly the same shot as you.
i had something similar happen to me recently. i was only using my sony f828 (which looks a bit like an slr with a consumer 80-200), but they came up with their p&s, saw my camera and decided to see what i was up to. they were a whole family: father, mother, son and daughter, and to be honest, none of them looked too bright (not at all, really), but true to such people, they also looked really wonderful and warm.
at the time i was taking a picture of berlin's fernsehturm (t.v. tower) in the mirror of a moped, and they all piled up behind me looking over my shoulders before i noticed them at all. i turned around, and they all looked at me expectantly :) i decided that i would try to help them get into unusual picture-taking ideas, so i spent the next 10 minutes showing them other pictures i had just taken, of the tower peeking out behind buildings, next to similarly-shaped traffic signs, dwarfed by street lamps (perspective), and so on. they all looked so happy, and when i left them, they were crouching behind things, trying to take non-normal pictures :) that made me feel so great, on an otherwise not so great (but very grey) day.

Great thread! Makes me nervous about the "Bigma" thats on its way
I've had a lot the same comments, but the best was from a guy at a Nature Art Show I was exhibiting at. He insisted his P&S was just as good as my camera and that it cost a lot less too!! Then he bought one of my prints for his daughter and left happily

I don't shoot with anything longer than my 70-200 2.8 IS but I was shooting an indoor high school volleyball tournament when another parent from the opposing team walked by and snipped that I must have a extreme case of penis envy. I turned to glare at him and noticed he had a Nikon hanging off his neck, what a jerk.

This summer, while in Oslo, me and my fiancee took the bus heading north when an elderly lady, about 75 years or so and somewhat disabled takes the seat opposite us.
She checks us out and then notices my 20D with a 17-40/4L in my lap.
"Nice camera", she says and smiles to me.
And then the comment that startles me:
"But I find it's very hard to get a nice background blur with those"
Just goes to show that you can never assume an older lady knows nothing about modern technology.....

A few years ago when I would photograph NFL games I would ride the metrolink to the stadium downtown because of limited parking space. As I was riding on the metrolink with a 28-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, 300 2.8 and the 400 2.8 lens people would ask me if I was with Sports Illustrated.

I get way more comments about my 70-200mm than my 500mm. Everyone assumes the 200 is like 1100 X magnification.
I had one guy comment that my setup must have cost at least $1,000 dollars! He had no idea.
I don't think I've have yet to get a comment on the 500mm. People just get out of my way. In the jungle the porters called it the bazuukah, which translates well in any language.

Well to me good and bad things happened.
The good things are that I have more access and more space(people just get out of my way). They think I am a pro and they all say "what a big lens you have there"(well it is even the "small model 70-200L f4).
The bad thing is that everyone when I pull it out of the bug just notices me and maybe afraid of me.It is not easy to take some photos.
Well it is a target to be stolen.

wow, you know the word "fanboy" is!!! serious props.
yea, i respect nikon too, it's my choice when using manual film cameras. :P
but yes, i like to make people feel like morons. it seems negative impressions last longer than postive ones.
-as long as they learn something, i'll be happy.
i don't mind if i personally won't be remembered, just as long as they learn something about photography, i'm happy.

You always see the flashes coming from the crowd any time you see a broadcast from any sporting event, eg The Olympics.
And they make sure they have anti-red eye pre-flash on as well.

that's when you cough in his face wet style.
then when they say "excuse you"
then you say, "oh i'm sorry, i didn't know that being a dick doesn't need an excuse, but when i cough i do".
when they give you that "well..(searching for excuse)"
cut in and start talking down to them as if they're a 10 year old and about proper manners and learning how to be a good example for their children, and how their children get mad at them and don't respect them because of how they're critical of everything etc, and that if they stopped to actually not be so narcistically self-centered, they might actually be able to appreciate other people's opinions and points of views instead of being a racist bigot. (none of this is true, but inversely could be true if you look at it in the right light)
And then walk away. Usually people don't approach me again and think twice before they quip.
