A few stories here:
While travelling overseas and shooting in a crowded market, I was asked by one merchant "Are we going to be on TV?" I said yes, but it will only be briefly and its up to those terrible editors who aren't aware of the good service you provide, so make sure you watch TV all day tomorrow and not miss it.
"Wow! How many mega pixels is that?"
And the most irritating was recently at my daughter's dance recital when I had the 70-200 with the 580EX. People came up to me and stared while I was composing the shot. Very annoying.

Guy to his girlfriend re: 20D w/100-400 "yeah, that's a wide angle telephoto
but I like Nikon better"
"Am I going to be in the magazine?"
"How much do you make?"
"Why's your hat on backwards?"...my reply, "Balance"

I heard that one too, I was working on the computers at College and this "Graphics design student" (Some old bloke) Saw my 20D on the desk (I was taking a look at some pics I had just taken) and he was like "Oh why didden't you buy a Nikon?" (In a smart A** manner) and I was like,
I'd either:
1) Stare at them as if they're a moron and I'm beyond reproach until they get scared and skitter away.
2) I'd tell them polite, "If I wanted to speak to a moron, I'd talk first."
3) "I didn't buy a Nikon because I wanted something dependable."
4) Laugh really hard and then stop suddenly and ignore them.
For anyone that doesn't know, I look like I'm 18 and am generally a pretty cheerful dood. But I've got a cruel streak, most people have a mean streak, but that's not me. I'm hella cynical and live satirical comedy. I'm just that cruel.

I'm about to get my first white lens (70-200 2.8) in a few weeks so have not yet experienced the pleasures of anyone making a comment to me about my Canon lenses.
however, I've spent many hours under a darkcloth shooting large format in highly public places so I've already been immunized to virtually all camera comments.
but this thread really begs the question why Canon does not offer a black option on the longer lenses (for those of us living in areas not often visited by the sun)

Probably for the free marketing at major events like the Olympics, where the sea of white glass adds to the perception of Canon's dominance.

Nah, Canon gets a great deal on "off white" paint!

People always seem incredulous to learn that some big lenses don't ZOOM all that much. Many assume the 24-70 w/ hood will zoom to the moon.
The most common is "it surely must take great pictures"...no, photographers take great pictures. The camera is just the tool to get the job done.
Actually, the funniest comment I've heard was while using my Metz 54-4 as flash-fill in bright daylight.
"Why is that idiot using his flash when its so sunny outside?"

Its not as idiotic as trying to use a P&S flash to take photos of objects way off in the distance!

But the funniest is when you're taking pics of a building or something, and when you turn around you suddenly see six or seven tourists waiting, all with their p&s ready to take exactly the same shot as you.

My "big gear" setup has consisted of a 1D Mark 2 and 20-200/f2.8 or 400/f/5.6, but I cannot remember ever having anyone approach me with any questions or comments. In my early days (before I had much equipment), I have approached others. While in Yosemite, I asked one guy if his tripod was a Gitzo and what his opinion of it was; he barely responded. To another, I asked about the medium format equipment he was using and received barely a response.
I know that I prefer a quiet and non-distracting environment when shooting, but I would not mind questions from others. I have learned a lot about home repair, auto mechanics, landscaping and other skills by talking with others. I realize that certain activiites like fishing and photography are more solitary than others, but I think it is good to respond to others who may have questions. I also realize that when shooting, our time is limited, and lighting conditions may be rapidly changing, so we may not be a a conversational mood. I may think some questions reflect ignorance, but in my opinion, it is good to respond respectfully whenever I can. We all have had to start our hobby as beginners; think back to how little we knew when first starting.

Or taking flash photos in a stadium from the grandstands!
You always see the flashes coming from the crowd any time you see a broadcast from any sporting event, eg The Olympics.

Actually, there was a funny story from the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Organizers saw that incredible "flash wave" that was created every time Michael Johnson ran around the track. For the closing ceremonies, they had a great idea...
giving disposable Kodak cameras w/ built in flash to every attendee...their hope was to create a flash wave that would circle the stadium. Unfortunately, most could not understand the instructions, and the flash wave never materialized. Guess they needed someone to run around and around the stadium.

I don't mind the occasional question, especially at crowded areas like Glacier Point in Yosemite. If the lights going, I ask them to wait a minute, and that usually works. I do mind when Joe P&S starts yammering about megapix this and that. My favorite was in Yellowstone, a bunch of us are shooting a moose thats resting on the other side of a creek. I've got the 70-200 F4, and am seriously outgunned by everyone around me, but still it's kinda fun. All of a sudden this guy w/a p&s steps to within five feet of the moose and shouts to his wife "how's this?" I thought I was gonna be the only guy with a lens wide enough to capture the whole trampling...

Yeh typical isen't it? When you want them to use the flash then suddenly they don't know how to!
