I was shooting at Wimbledon one day, and I was standing at the back of about 5 rows of people, but after seeing my 1D mkII with 70-200 IS + 1.4x (and hearing the rattling 8.5fps), somehow people made a gap for me and I was in the front row in 2 minutes. I loved it.

Mainly just the "I bet you can see to the moon with that" and "Wow. How much zoom does that camera have?".

finns are a bit socially retarded. We never talk to other people in public. Everyone completely ignores me, when I'm shooting candids at a park with my friend's 70-200IS

I heard that one too, I was working on the computers at College and this "Graphics design student" (Some old bloke) Saw my 20D on the desk (I was taking a look at some pics I had just taken) and he was like "Oh why didden't you buy a Nikon?" (In a smart A** manner) and I was like,

Funny tread! I don't have a white lens but sometimes it's enough to have the hood on my 50mm f/1.4 to be asked for what paper I'm working

Have not had the 70-200 outside much yet, but did get the "Wow, nice Camera" while shooting the local Santa Claus Parade from someone I knew on one of the floats.

The stupidest comment was actually directed at my 300D just after my daughter was born. I was in the recovery room with my wife (C-section) and after putting the camera and kit lens on a table, the aenestitist (sp) says "Is that an old camera? I don't like it - its too big. Mine is a lot smaller and a lot better"

All those years in school............what a waste

I was at Adorama trying out a 300/4 and some woman starts yelling that I was paparazzi. Needless to say I bought the lens

"What newspaper do you work for?"

"So when are we going to be on television?" (television? WTF?)

But the funniest is when you're taking pics of a building or something, and when you turn around you suddenly see six or seven tourists waiting, all with their p&s ready to take exactly the same shot as you.

I don't think its the color either. The funniest comments I've gotten were all with black lenses (just bought a 400 2.8, so I'm sure that will soon change).

Once while shooting a basketball game with a D2H and 70-200VR, I was squatting down on the baseline and got the feeling I was being watched. I looked up from the viewfinder and find a guy bending over me trying to read the writing on my lens (while I'm clearly taking pictures). I asked if I could help him, and he asked me what size lens I had. I told him it was a 70-200mm lens. He had this shocked look, and told me I must be mistaken because he had a 300mm lens and it wasn't that big. I tried to explain about letting more light in to be able to take pictures in that dimly lit gym and he had this glazed over look. Then he asked how many megapixels it was, and I told him 4... he then got really ticked off and stormed away. I think he thought I was BSing him and not telling him the truth.

I get the "what paper are you with" from time to time... actually like getting that one because I figure I look like I know what I'm doing.

While we were at Disney about a year ago, I had brought a D2H as a backup body. Ended up getting dust on the D70, so I started using it in the parks... with a 17-55 2.8 lens on it and a speedlight most of the time. The reaction you get when you hand that to someone to take your picture is pretty priceless. I had accidentally left it in continuous fire and when we all smile for a family shot, I hear the familiar machine gun burst and the lady taking our picture jumps and says, "you have a very happy shutter". We did a lot of timer shots with the camera sitting on whatever was handy... trash can, ground, whatever was there. You get some really bizarre looks when a family of six is standing there staring into space and they don't see a camera. On the last day, we wanted the final and best vacation shot of the family so I needed to find someone that wouldn't mess it up. I saw a young Asian guy walking buy and I picked him. He took a great picture, and I got a comment from my wife about stereotyping him.... but hey, I can't help it if I was right. He was very comfortable with the camera and taking our pictures. I get real nervous when the person looks like they are afraid to touch the camera.

I was finishing up a soccer game a few months back with a 1DM2 and 120-300 2.8 Sigma on a monopod. I had collapsed the monopod and was carrying the thing still assembled back to the car when I got the "how much does that cost?" type question that I really hate. This was more original... "wow, I bet that must have cost $2K!". I usually don't respond, or say "a lot" to the cost question. This time, I said... "it would be a nice down payment!" and the guy's jaw dropped and he had this look of "is he kidding or not" on his face.

Is that a telescope?
How do I get a press pass?
Did that thing cost more than my car?
Can I hold it?

Are a few I can think of off the top of my head

At a high school track meet:
"If you take my picture will it be in the paper?"

Me: "No"

Athlete: "Come on man. You got something against shot-putters?"

Me: " I don't work for any newspaper"

Athlete: "Oh come on man. I want to be in the paper."

Me: "I don't work for the paper"

Athlete:" Please"

Me: " OK, here you go"

Another time
"Hey is that thing digital?" (As I am chimping)

"yes it is"

"Dont you just hate digital shutter lag?"

I look down at my 1D and say "yea, it sucks does't it?"

I dont seem to get as many comments in Upstate NY... people generally keep to themselves... and want you to keep to yourself also...

Last weekend I was taking some bird shots with my 1D/100-400... and a Sheriff had to comment... "I think you may need a longer lens"...

When the GF and I travel we often get the "So do you do this as a job?" or "Are you professional photographers?" whats even more fun is when you tell them you are doing it mainly for a hobby...

I get a lot of people telling me that I'm pretty brave walking around with a nice camera like that (20D with grip/17-40L). I reply to them: "What? This old piece of junk?"

I also get into some high-school games for free when I have my camera slinked over my shoulder. During our town's Christmas parade I just walked past the line into the street right next to a cop no problem. Can't beat the that. Oh yeah, I also get a lot of questions of why I would bother with such a big camera. "You need to get one of these (a little P&S). Takes great pictures!" Yeah, I bet.

Couple of weeks ago. I don't know the exact date I will have to check the exif.
The woman in the shot with the evil eye was pretty nasty!

Hmmm....good question. I have only really paid attention to the reaction to the photos published or shown, not the gear. I personally don't care for the white look.
