My understanding is that this was always a special order lens, but recently Canon announced they would no longer manufacture it.
Yes, it has always been special order. There are very few of these lenses around.
I am not sure if Canon has discontinued the lens or not, but that does seem to be the rumor.
Those huge front elements are awesome. I recall the reason Canon stopped the 200/1.8 was environmental concerns over the heavy metals and other elements and compounds needed to make those huge pieces of glass. Their new line has a smaller looking long tele (300 maybe?) that uses a design called refractive design, and supposedly the lens can be made 20% smaller and lighter, so these huge pieces of glass may not be necessary anymore. This is destined to be the one true collectors item! Does anybody other than SI own one?

Is this really what they sell for I cannot believe that lenses even exist that would be this pricy! You better take some priceless pics to make this worthwhile
Oh man... I was looking for a 400 2.8 and now this comes along? What do do? So do you think I could use this to shoot high school basketball in a gym? Or are these only for capturing Friends stars while they are sunbathing with their top down.
By the way, this 400 is a complete scam and even using the same PBase gallery of pictures from another 400 that was listed a couple of weeks ago, didn't sell, and is now relisted.

And I thought it was crazy that the same 400/2.8 was within a few hundred bucks of a brand new one.
