p.6 #1 · Cosina Voigtländer Septon 40/2 for Sony E and Nikon Z announced for March 2026
From existing Voigtländer accessory dome hoods, I think LH-90IIS (still in production, for APO-Skopar 90/2.8 F-mount lens) could also work with the Septon since it's also fit for 52mm filter thread. They are a bit limited in availability even in Tokyo though but I just picked up one from Fujiya Camera and will try if it fits. It has a relatively large opening so I think it should not cause vignetting on 40/2 either...
It appears to me that the LH-90IIS is essentially the same physical dome-style hood as the LH-40N, but with updated naming and packaging to match the APO-SKOPAR 90mm f/2.8 SL IIs. Both look same to me in product images except for the text and both are ultra-thin. Both have 39mm opening.

I think it's VERY likely that many potential buyers will already have the 40/1.2 which makes one ask what unique value the Septon brings to the table. I think the price is totally in line with the market considering the size which you can't get from another lens in the lineup.

Strange that €649,- is considered as too expensive without knowing anything about the qualities of the lens.
Whether it's worth the price will be revealed by reviews.
Ultimately, it's a very individual question and depends on the rest of the equipment, how important another lens solution is to you.
In any case, it's no longer a price range I'd pre-order blindly.
At the Japanese price, it would be an instant pre-order, but this way I'll take a closer look at it first.
It was clear that Voigtländer lenses justify their price based on their build quality alone, but €649 = $765 (converted) is a tough nut to crack for a lens that would just be nice to have for me.
I'll take a look at it from a distance for now; if it convinces me, I can always buy it on the used market.

Just for a pricing comparison the 40mm FL lens I use with my Fuji X-T5, the C/V 27mm f2 Ultron, cost $595 or $100 less than the new Septon. It has become my favorite lens out of the 8 I own for the X mount. It is by far the smallest lens, but has great IQ and is a joy to use. Well worth the cost!
For my A7CR, my smallest lens is the Sonnar 35mm f2.8 ZA, which I got reconditioned for $599 back in 2019. The price has dropped over time for this 12 year old lens and it is still around $650 new. The Septon at $699 does not seem out of line, given it build quality and added f-stop.

CV product marketing is plain weird.
Septon Z 40/2 205g $700 68x32mm
Nokton Z 40/1.2 315g $900 68x54mm
Nikon AF 40/2 170g $200. 70x45mm
Septon E 40/2 165g $700 61x30mm
Nokton E 40/1.2 420g (!) $750 70x59mm
In form, it's a pretty ideal lens for around-a-pound compact full-frames, ultimately the super light (414g) Canon R8 or Sony A7C (514g). Nikon doesn't make a light / compact full-frame body , only 'standard' 1.5 lb sizes.
But, they didn't make a Canon RF version.
For Nikon, the 1.2 looks better on paper for the extra speed and relatively small form and cost differences. We could be surprised, but I don't think there'll be much difference in image quality between f/2-f/8 considering the Septon's size constraint. And, the Nok gives you a couple of extra gears, opening to a pretty exotic 1.2. The Nikon 40 is still a smart answer, too.

I guess that would describe me as I have no interest in this lens since I already own the 40mm f/1.2 Nokton, which is one of my favorite lenses.

I was thinking about getting the new Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical II.
What don't you like about the rendering?
I find the bokeh garish and distracting when compared to every other type of Voigt, and this has applied to every Nokton I've tried across two generations. They tend to be annoyingly soft and hazy wide open, loads of LoCA, and overall have not impressed me at all.

People are free to make bad decisions though
Got it. I still might make that bad decision I'll have to research this a bit more. Thanks.

I have a plan to compare the:
40 Septon
40 Ultron
40 Nokton
40 TTA
40 Nikon
in a head to head battle, but it will require either someone loaning me their Z 40/1.2 or seeing if I can borrow one from B&H because I have no desire to buy it again.
Hopefully it will make it clear which one to buy for which reasons and be the definitive resource online for 40mm options, at least for Nikon shooters There are some other options floating out there for Sony that I won't look at.

The question is always what you're looking for, what you personally like. It's completely irrelevant whether others share your taste or not. Why did you intend to buy the 40mm Nokton? There must be a reason. I assume that a 313-page thread to it is partly responsible for your desire. That is, you're drawn to the Nokton's rendering. What difference do other people's preferences make to that? I don't understand this way of thinking.

Got it in hand this morning and took it for a quick walkaround to get my first impressions before starting the full review.
It's very compact and light, a perfect match for the A7CR. Focusing is easy, with a focus throw of ~ 145 degrees from infinity to 0.3m. The aperture ring is thin but solid, with clear, satisfying clicks. It's not a character lens, being sharp in the focused area while rendering smoothly, and the modern double-gauss design gives it some personality. CA also seems well controlled, making the overall rendering pleasant.

Thanks for sharing your first impressions. However, I must confess that the statement that the lens has no character but personality left me rather perplexed, but thankfully also a little amused.😄
