p.2 #5 · Cosina Voigtländer Septon 40/2 for Sony E and Nikon Z announced for March 2026
Hmmm. IDK. I like the idea of this lens. Small, compact, likely as well-made as other CVs. For the Zf, smaller is better. It's a "if you only have one lens" kinda lens.
But, I shoot CV for practical reasons, primarily the 28 and 50
28/1.5 - MF great for zone focus / gives me more control and speed over AF 28s.
50/2 - SMALL size for the performance compared to the AF alternatives.
50/1 - great portrait lens - small for being super fast.
I still have the NIKON 28/2.8Z, but I don't use it at all. It's light. It's redundant. I should sell it.
Zone focus isn't as great at 40mm - it becomes more "pre-focus", so I tend to want AF in this focal length, particularly since everything else I use is MF. The Nikon 40/2 is a tad lighter and a bit larger - call it a draw. I like the look of the images from the Nikon 40, too. It slots in between the 28 and 50 well because it is light and adds AF.
This looks like a good lens, though. If the 40/2Z AF didn't fit so well, I might try it. (But, would you pick this over the similar sized 40/1.2 that is a hit?)
I kinda wish it were a 21 or 24... It's a bit odd how CV in an age of super sensitive sensors and IS obsesses over slight lens speed and IQ differences in a single focal length rather than broadening focal length options.

If this paves the way for a native Z 28/2.8 Colar-Skopar replacement, bar the door.

As the resident 40/2 Ultron fangirl, it’s my obligation to buy this lens if only to report back that the Ultron is still the ultimate 40mm lens
Yes, Please! I happen to really like my Nikon 40/2 so far so I would hope you're report would be Ultron is better but not by much.

Dude, you are NOT helping me keep money in my pocket!!
Wait until I get the Septon in my hands, I'll do a comparison between the Ultron and Septon. The Septon looks like the more appealing option if you're looking for a smaller, native option with a functional aperture ring.
Maybe someone will be generous and lend me their 40/1.2 Nok to add to the mix, hint hint
New surprise announcement from Cosina Voigtländer for March/April release (specific dates not yet announced). I wasn't expected new announcements prior to CP+ but this fits their monthly announcement schedule. I've been asking them to do some pancakes for mirrorless in previous chats at CP+ so I'm very happy to see this.
It looks like E-mount version will be released in March and Z-mount in April.
I just received this email. It looks very cool, but I haven't had a chance to look into it further yet. Is this a new design, or is it based on another M lens?

I was actually struck by how similar the optical design is to the 40mm ƒ/1,4 Nokton Classic. I don't have the images handy to pull up, but they're almost identical.

Comparing the optical formula and specs to the Ultron, on paper the Septon seems like it might actually be a cleaner (more modern) version, that will be the most interesting part to me. I think the Ultron is a perfect balance between the absolute MESS that Noktons produce and the sterility you approach on the Lanthar side.
Ultron with 5 groups, 6 elements:
Septon with 6 groups, 7 elements (and 1 extra aperture blade):
MFD/magnification is markedly better on the Ultron if that's important to you (and one reason I disliked the 40 Nok), with the Ultron at 1:4 and the Septon at 1:5.3

I suspect I will dislike the pancake nature of this one, but it does look like a good option for current Ultron users. Always happy to see new CV's for Z.

The Z is noticeably wider AND longer simply because of how the mount works. And yeah, the scallops definitely add weight as they are metal.
I’ll take the 40 extra grams to not have it look like the E abomination.
Exactly. The volume of the Nikon (assuming a perfect cylinder) is about 30% greater due to the mount diameter and flange distance. Apply that 1.3 factor to the 165g weight of the Sony and you'll get ~215g.
