p.3 #1 · Cosina Voigtländer Septon 40/2 for Sony E and Nikon Z announced for March 2026
The Ultron was my by huge margins most used lens for ten years on the D700 & FM2. Today I'm more into "absolute MESS that Noktons produce and the sterility you approach on the Lanthar side" even if it's not the way I would describe them. The Ultron gets twice the size on the FTZ, and it has same elctronic problems, switches between beinga a "smart" and a "dumb" lens which enoys me.
But I'll most certanly get this I miss the compactness and I miss the 40mm focal length

I could loan you the 40/1.2 E if you’ve got a Megadap…

Wait until I get the Septon in my hands, I'll do a comparison between the Ultron and Septon. The Septon looks like the more appealing option if you're looking for a smaller, native option with a functional aperture ring.
Maybe someone will be generous and lend me their 40/1.2 Nok to add to the mix, hint hint

What I find interesting and what hasn't been mentioned before is that this Septon is 39.6 mm at infinity, while the Nokton is 41.7 mm. Not a huge difference but noticeable and the explanation for the weaker magnification figure of the Septon.

I was hopeful but looking at the samples on Cosina’s page… less so. I’ll wait for Juha and others to get it in their hand before final determination but looks too close to the old Nokton to be hugely interesting.

The out of focus field curvature that has edges coming back into focus...reminds me of the Laowa 28mm f/1.2. Maybe they should have added another aspheric element to flatten the field?

Wild that those are the shots they chose to showcase...backlit, harsh DR scenarios where a lot of glass will struggle, and all for wholly dull subjects.
I'll reserve judgement until I can do actual A/B tests and understand the bokeh and rendering better.

I'm all about more pancake designs...but my CV 40 1.2 SE is already fairly compact. Either way looking forward to more examples and welcome the choice.
