p.1 #1 · Cosina Voigtländer Septon 40/2 for Sony E and Nikon Z announced for March 2026

New surprise announcement from Cosina Voigtländer for March/April release (specific dates not yet announced). I wasn't expected new announcements prior to CP+ but this fits their monthly announcement schedule. I've been asking them to do some pancakes for mirrorless in previous chats at CP+ so I'm very happy to see this.

It looks like E-mount version will be released in March and Z-mount in April.

Interesting lens, interesting name. Kind of similar to when Nikon called their lenses Nikkor-S when they had seven elements, with the S from Latin for seven (Septem).

I preordered mine (E-mount) from Map Camera (75420 yen there including tax). I think this will be priced somewhat higher in other regions though as usual (considering taxes/duties/tariffs etc.). This should be a good seller in E-mount and an alternative to 35/1.4 Nokton classic (E-mount version is 67560 at Map and backordered). 35/1.4 Nokton classic has been a long term top-seller among Cosina's E-mount offerings in Japan thanks to small size and reasonable pricing. Some might not like its classic rendering though.

For Nikon Z they have priced 40/1.2 strategically (it's 88490 at Map currently) as an entry-point / gateway lens while the E-mount original 40/1.2 is nowadays 120990 yen.

Great I realy wanted a compact 40/2.0 in Z-mount. I like my old Ultron, but it's not so small on the Zf.

Very nice! Looks like an updated Ultron for the modern era.
Rather unfortunate though that they are sticking with this 'modern' design for the shell of the E-mount version. Very off-putting.

Yes, it would make sense if Nikon got the new design, and Sony stayed on the already proven one ...

I definitely need a retro style GFX100RF/X-E5 like Sony camera for my Voigtlanders and this one, with eye assist MF.

I remember people were compalining there are no Ultron lenses ported to E/Z mounts. Here we have these, now, as Septons.

I prefer the E-mount styling here (and with the other new E-mount lenses). I think it's especially sleek with this kind of smaller lenses (also like it a lot on both 28mm lenses). Not that I had anything against the old designs either, but this looks more stylish to me from build perspective than for example 35/1.4 Nokton classic in E-mount.

Looks like there was a Voigtländer Septon before: it was the top of the line 50mm lens for the Bessamatic cameras in the 1960s: https://lenslegend.com/voigtlander-septon-50mm-f2-lens-review/

Other than both having 7 elements, the lens design is quite different though. So similar to how Voigtländer is using Skopar, Ultron and Nokton designations today, it’s more about the class of lens rather than optical design.

I already have the Nikkor Z AF 40mm, and the Voigtländer 40/1.2 in Z and M mounts; another 40mm option ... It is nice and compact :-)

Cosina refers to Orthometer-like design; however, I guess they mean "Orthometar" design, by Carl Zeiss Jena:

The lens looks like a really nice size. At f/2 and just 30mm long, it is faster and smaller than the Sony 40 f/2.5 G. It should be an interesting option for some on Sony. It is shorter (but not lighter) than the Nikon Z 40 f/2 as well. Perhaps a tougher sell on Nikon, but it also would seem to be a good fit for the Nikon Zf camera. It is good to see Cosina design lenses for mirrorless again. This lens and the 75 f/1.8 Portrait Heliar suggest they might design more lenses targeting mirrorless cameras even if the lenses aren't easily adapted to a Leica M camera.

Now, if only would Sony update or implement a new manual-focus aid system, like Nikon has on its Zf and Z6iii
I am sure it would be easy for them and it would make using any Voigtlander (or any lens with electronic contacts actually) a breeze!

As the resident 40/2 Ultron fangirl, it’s my obligation to buy this lens if only to report back that the Ultron is still the ultimate 40mm lens

The aperture ring does not look fun to use for the same reason as the pancake version of the Ultron, as it’s extremely thin. That’s one small advantage to adapting the Ultron.

What is the different way Nikon does it? I thought at least compare to CV which has electronic contacts vs shooting my true vintage lens its already a way easier experience to use the CV lenses because A7IV goes automatically into magnified mode.

The new Nikon bodies will show green boxes (Eye-AF) over people's eyes when using chipped manual lenses.

Very similar in size, appearance and hood design to the Voigtlander 27mm f2 Ultron for my Fuji X-T5 (40mm FF eqv), though the 27mm is slightly thinner, focuses a bit closer and has a silver option which I purchased. I really like that lens, it has become my goto over the last 6 weeks as it’s so compact, yet the IQ is great.

Will wait for @Juha to test it out, but am considering adding the Septon for my A7CR for Sony. The only 40mm I have for Sony is the Batis.

Clarification: All Nikons back to the Z6/Z7 will show green confirmation boxes. It's just the newer one that have added in subject detection as part of it.
