Well until the 53.4x40 sensors become mainstream the 44x33 is what everyone considers to be MF. In the film days we did not say mini MF for 645 cameras and maxi MF for 6x9 cameras…they were all MF cameras. Why is it we need to change our nomenclature for digital MF?
With film we had MF plus an attribute (6x6, 6x9, etc). With digital, we do not have that and we should be able to differentiate from the larger MF. MF 44x33 sounds clear to me. The 53.4 x 40 may be rare in this forum, but is quite a common format. Fuji calls their sensor "Large Format," which is even more pretentious than MF alone.

God, please move on. IBIS, miniMF sensor etc. you're squabbling needlessly about stuff that anyone who is genuinely interested in this camera already knows about. A few Euro FM'ers actually have the camera, let's not discourage them from posting their impressions.

How do we differentiate between 44x33 and 53.4x40 sensors? They cannot be both MF. Calling 43x33 miniMF or cropMF does not sound derogatory but clarifying to me.
Personally, I think Fuji's naming acronym of GFX says what it really is ... FX (Full Frame) ... the Grande (i.e. larger) version. Not really calling it medium format, just BIGGER than FF.
Semantics being what they are, and folks that pay attention vs. don't pay attention vs. couldn't give a rat's back side ... I think someone at Fuji was paying attention, when they went with GFX.

If you look around on Fujifilm’s website, they refer to GFX as — wait for it! — “large format.” No, I’m not making that up.
No common film medium format was as small as the 33x44 format, fwiw.
“miniMF” acknowledges that 33x44 is larger than full frame while accurately nothing that it isn’t as large as the smallest medium format. Now that larger sensor that Sony has supposedly been playing with. (54mm x 40mm or something like that?) is about the same as the 645 medium format.

Historically, large format photography refers to an imaging format 9cm x 12cm and is larger than medium format.

I don't often see people trot out the miniMF thing when talking about the X2D... why is that?
Because GFX is more common? I sometimes refer to my X2D as cropMF if necessary to differentiate from a larger sensor. You cannot jinx a camera by calling it cropMF, though you may confuse people because they are not aware that there are larger MF sensors.

Why do you have to differentiate between the different MF formats. When I shot film I shot…wait for it…medium format in numerous sizes…all were called medium format, which differed from 35mm and large format…which also had multiple sizes fr. 4x5 to 5x7 and 8x10.
Seems to me no one was confused when shooting film when they said they shot 35mm, medium format or large format.

It’s actually accessible to people, hence we must prove its inferiority to the real MF.

Because we differentiate between m43, APS-C, and FF formats as well. Why differentiate between APS-C and FF and not for sensors larger than FF? In film (film days are not over), the format is often referred by number (6x6, 6x9, etc) and clearly differentiated between large and medium formats.
A while ago, DPReview has tried to make the sensor size naming less misleading. They call the 44x33 sensor Medium Format Type 3.4. That name may be less "insulting" than cropMF or miniMF 😄.
Anyways, I picked up this discussion because of someone's knee-jerk reaction to the name miniMF. Typically the context (brand name) clarifies which MF sensor size is being used.

I wasn't saying it suggested "large format" ... just "larger than Full Frame".
Plenty of confusion about what GFX100RF is. Is it true GFX (because emphasis on cropping). And to what extent it is a larger version of X100 series. I think the vague identity of the camera makes it more interesting - although it can make it also a flop
I see GFX100RF from the point of view of Nikon Coolpix A and Ricoh GR series. Super duper version of Ricoh GRIII. It is differentiated from Leica by its f/4 lens. For the same reason it is also different from Fuji X100 series.
No reason to take GFX100RF too seriously. Hey, just buy a Canon or Nikon if you want a serious camera. Or Sony
Bottom line is that GFX100RF discussion has been fun. Not to mention the way how Fujifilm has flooded Youtube with GFX100RF videos. In the end of the day the product is measured by its long term users. I am sure GFX100RF will be a wonderful camera for some, but I am not sure if this niche is large enough to make the camera a commercial success.

So, I came here (for the first time in many years) to see if I could find somewhere that people were having an intelligent discussion about a (really different) new camera.
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that the conversation is dominated by three or so noisy, rude, know-it-alls who have zero interest in the camera but are so expert that they have to tell everyone else they are idiots. Over and over and over again. In exactly the same terms.
What was more of a surprise is that one of them does this on other forums as well.
I guess I am the idiot for reading all 43 pages..... Thanks to those who have added some constructive thoughts and images. Such a shame so much of the internet is like this.

Welcome to FM.com. It’s still generally better than many other places…
And generally, it’s always the time between announcements and actual use that people get most worked up.

Not that it is going to make you feel any better, my fellow FM-er, but I am in the same “Idiot” Club, as I also read these 43 and many other linked pages, let alone YouTube videos that make me “sugar high and then drop me in Mariana’s Trench.
But like you said, get out and shoot. The sun is shining.....
Or if it is raining or snowing with whatever you are “packing 😊
