Thanks - no hurry, take your time.
Daylight WB setting is kind of interesting. I did a few years of Astrophotography back in the day and as I recall we always set our WB to Daylight. It seems to have quite a bit of latitude.

Hi Dilemma,

Nice video of these great-looking Eagles.
I took the liberty of taking a little tour around your youTube channel this morning. You've got some really nice videos. Imagine, you posted your first one 11 years ago - a Crow collecting money for the money box. !

I especially loved the one with of the Barred Owl Chicks, they're adorable. Also, I really like the sound of that Fender Stratocaster - awesome guitar!

But you sure have a wonderful abundance of Bald Eagles in your area. We're lucky to see on every few years.

Thanks for posting,
Rudy

Some of those are very very old. The Raven stuffing money in the box is cell footage.

All of our chatting about RAW/cRAW/HEVC/AVC/24vs30vs60fps/4Koversampledvssubsampled/etc really makes me realize we have entered a golden age of videography in hybrid cameras. That's not to mention the cinema focused cameras from all brands, many of which are Netflix approved for projects approaching film industry quality. I look back at my old footage on my Canon 7D and see all of the things that frustrated me from taking video back then, all traced to the limitations of the camera--which in Canon's defense was never meant to be a hybrid camera, the video capability almost felt more like an add-on because cell phone videos were taking off and they were like "well I guess we gotta make sure the 7D takes passable video too."

Now, even shooting at the lower settings of 4K on the R5ii (subsampled, lower frame and bit rate settings, etc.), as long as I'm properly exposed, have a decent lens on, and am using CLog2, the weak point in the footage is always going to be me and my proficiency. And that's a good problem to have.

As mentioned in the Canon Winter 24-25 thread:
El Yunque Rainforest took the "rain" part of "rainforest" very seriously today. Opted to keep the gear safe, so didn't get to shoot much. Here are a couple quick ones I managed to sneak in between torrential downpours.

Managed to sneak a couple of video clips as well. On top of the rain, it's high season for tourists here - it was extremely crowded, making it nearly impossible to find a moment without people either walking into frame (hence the shorter shots), and/or speaking over the rainforest ambiance (hence the stock music from Youtube).

R5 Mark II + RF 24-70 F2.8 L or 70-200 F2.8 L.

Handheld, except for the first shot, which is on tripod.

24 FPS, shutter 1/50, ISO 800.

4K-D Fine, XF AVC S 10-bit 4:2:2, Intra High, C-Log 2

Grading in Resolve Studio 19.

Hi Folks,

I'd like to throw out a couple of suggestions/ideas for the group to consider that might be helpful and interesting for us in a number of ways. See what you think and share your thoughts.

In addition to sharing our most recent videos here on an ongoing basis as we complete them, we could also do some other things as well. This would be helpful for those of us who aren't able to get out and do a lot of videos at certain times of the year.

Suggestion #1: A periodic "Show & Tell" day.
We have a weekly or bi-weekly "Show & Tell" day where those who want to participate will post one video they have done in the last few of years or so, and they share a bit about their experience, challenges, solutions, etc., in shooting and/or editing it. Also, they could share some things they learned from the experience and any helpful advice they might have for folks, etc.

Some of us, for a variety of reasons, can't get out on a regular basis to shoot interesting footage year round. This would give us an opportunity to share some of our past stuff with the group and to learn from each other an on-going basis.

Suggestion #2: Periodic "Video Exercises".
For folks who want to participate what I envision is this: That we do periodic hands-on video exercises that will give us an opportunity to try and learn certain video skills. These exercises would focus on camera and editing skills and techniques rather than on trying to get interesting, compelling content. In other words, we should shoot subjects that are close to home, easy to find and don't require us to take a trip somewhere. Mind you that's great if you can do it.

Here are a few examples off the top of my head...
Example 1. Shooting the sky without blowing the highlights or losing the colours.
In this exercise we would shoot a short video which would include some sunrise and sunset footage, and any other sky conditions we would like (blue hour, golden hour, mid-day). This would be a great little challenge for 8-bit shooters like myself who as yet have done very little Log footage. Of course, this exercise would require that we shoot in Log. Finally, we would post, share and discuss our experiences and findings. If we keep the videos short and simple everyone should be able to participate even those with busy lives.

Example 2. Hand-held shooting.
We would produce a 1-2 minute video that is completety hand held. This video could include the following, static subjects, moving subjects that need to be tracked, some pans, tilts, pushes and pulls, etc.

Anyways, these kinds of little exercises are very doable for all but the most crazy-busy people and they're all easy enough to do technically. I'm sure they would be fun for us to do and share and have us learn stuff along the way.

Your thoughts?

P.S. If you're not too keen on any of these suggestions or keen on doing anything like this, please feel free to say so, or if you have other ideas please share them.
Thanks,
Rudy

I would love to watch this happen and follow along but not sure I can participate in the shooting exercises right now as I'm super swamped and I shoot often so it just adds to my stack. I'm mostly interested in learning the video editing process from scratch with Da Vinci Resolve starting with what to use for folder structure for best organization of content (video, audio, photo). And then, the basic workflow of converting Clog2, adding creative luts, basic adjustments, and the export process. I'm not even familiar with uploading to YouTube either so I have some work to do before I can even share anything.

Most of my footage can't be posted online but I have enough to cherry pick certain clips that can be used for examples. I should have plenty of examples from my recent trip to Indonesia where I was just filming random stuff or random people. Most of my stuff is handheld, often with the 70-200.

Some ideas for tests you could run could be the WB test we discussed with leaving it in "daylight" for sun, clouds, shade, or even darkness to see if that works, or is it any different than choosing AWB. I should have a ton of that footage to test with. Also, maybe not ideal for wildlife, but some rack focusing tests to nail down the focus speed settings so it's not too fast, and showing the examples of different speeds. And maybe some stabilization tests to show before/after shots that were stabilized in post to see just how much things can be stablized.

Anyway, whatever it is I would love to see some participation and follow along whether I can join in on the shooting or not.

I've been there and guess what, it was pouring rain as well. I guess that's why they call it a rainforest

Hi artsupreme and Dave (dj63401),

Hey guys, that's really great that you'd like to give this a try. Being retired with no kids and no grandkids I have lots of time available, so I'm happy to get the ball rolling and take the lead for a while. We can try it and see how it goes. If it turns out to be manageable, fun and helpful, we can continue. If not, we can dump it. As well, I'm really hoping that other members of the group will offer suggestions and share the lead when they feel like it, so please speak up with your ideas for video & editing exercises that we can discuss and try. Artsupreme made some great suggestions yesterday for some exercises and I'll choose one of those to get us started.

Regarding the video "Show and Tell" suggestion I made in my original post, I wanted to share my thinking behind this idea to help folks better understand my reasoning and where I was coming from.

Over the last few days since artsupreme started this video thread I've been thinking about which of my videos I should share with the group and why. When the winter begins up here in Canada I don't get out nearly as often as I normally do so I won't have a lot of new videos to share on a regular basis. This means digging into my old stash. However, I don't want to just post a video and have folks click the "Like" button and say "nice video" and not have any kind of helpful discussion that could build the group and advance our learning.

So what I'm going to do whenever I post a video as a "Show and Tell" video is give a bit of background info regarding the following: What I was hoping to accomplish/practice/learn/improve doing this video? What were some of the challenges/difficulties I faced (weather conditions, gear limitations, time limitations, lack of experience, etc.)? What things was I most happy with in the video (regarding shooting and/or editing)? What things did I not succeed at or was disappointed with?

For folks who feel like they simply want to share a video with the group and not share a bunch of background information, please feel totally free to do whatever you wish and not feel any pressure.

Cheers,
Rudy

My first wildlife documentary short film.
"Sandhill Cranes - Dancing Giants during the Fall Migration"

For the last 10 years I have been trying to find an opportunity to photograph, and in the last 3 years, film Sandhill Cranes on migration in our area, but without success. This past Fall I got lucky. I shot this footage back in November 2024 and have been working periodically on editing it since then. It's been a real labour of love for me and my wife and we have grown to love these beautiful, graceful Giants in the process.

Challenges and difficulties:
The major problems to overcome all had to do with the shooting conditions. The Cranes were on private property 1000 feet away, so way too far away for good IQ. Also, much of the day was warm and sunny so there was terrible atmospheric turbulence (heat shimmer) a lot of the time. It was quite windy for much of the day with gusts up to 50 kilometers per hour destroying the audio and shaking the footage. The biggest challenge in the editing part was matching the subtle blue-grey colour of the Cranes in the many clips shot across a wide range of lighting conditions from 11:00 am to sunset at 5:00 pm. Being somewhat of a perfectionist I was unhappy with the image quality and wanted to throw out the footage and quit the project more than once, but my wife said "no way" and encouraged me to make the best of it and finish the job. I'm glad I did.

Gear: Canon R5, RF100-500, RF200-800, + RF1.4x
Recording formats: 4K60K crop, 4K120
8-bit Standard Picture Profile
Editing: Davinci Resolve 19, edited on and exported from a 1080p timeline.

Comments and feedback welcome.

Hope you enjoy it.
Rudy

Some great ideas and videos being posted. I’ve been a bit tied up in my final days of this trip to write any substantial responses but will be sure to return with some once I’m back home and settled in.

Glad this thread now exists.

Rudy that was a great video. I know absolutely nothing about birds so I learned a lot from your video. Is it normal for birds to be monogamous for life? That's very interesting.

Regarding the party, why did they do that? What are the reasons birds call like that?

As for your video, it's amazing. You did not have control of the heat shimmer so as long as we know the story we can appreciate the footage, and you had plenty of good clips without it. You have your panning really dialed in. And your narrating and editing are put together very well, with a nice division between sound tracks.

I really need to dive into DaVinci. I bought the studio edition on Black Friday and I haven't opened the package up yet to install it.

Great work, keep it up.

Rudy,
Very well done. You have a great story and "good enough" footage to tell the story. Truth be told only a very small part was effected by the heat waves. I'm sure the cutting room floor held others we did not see. 99.5% of us would love to have put together something of that quality. Audio was super and paced just right for a relaxing viewing.
Keep doing them and sharing.

Wow, thanks so much for your encouraging words artsupreme! They mean a lot!

I'm really glad you learned some cool stuff about these birds. I myself didn't know a thing about them until I shot this footage and started doing some serious online research to try to understand the behaviours that I was seeing in my footage. For me, this is one of the real fun parts of doing these wildlife videos. I often don't know much about a species until after I film them and do a video presentation.

No, it's not normal for birds to be monogamous, especially not for an entire lifetime. It's one of the main reasons why Cranes are loved all over the world and even revered in some cultures. In some Asian cultures like in Japan and China Crane images feature prominently in wedding decorations like being embroidered on brides' dresses as a symbol of a happy, life-long marriage.

Regarding the party - I have no idea why the birds did that or called this way. All I know is I was just standing there a thousand feet away and filming anything that moved when suddenly hundreds of bird launched into flight calling their lungs out. I kept filming the entire process until the groups separated and came back down to the ground. Interestingly, as all these birds were swirling together in the sky I watched particularly to see is any groups of birds flew off away from the location and not a single group left. They all landed, which suggests to me that the ones on the ground had for some reason gone up intentionally to see the ones that were coming in. Again, I have no idea why they did that.

Thanks again for watching and for your kind and helpful feedback,

Oh yes, one more thing... thank you so much for starting this video thread. I have been looking for and hoping for a video sharing group that's for Canon shooters for over 2 years. Now we have one!

Rudy

Rudy, I'm happy to help when I have time and am able!

One more tip I discovered while taking a bunch of videos yesterday of my friend's one year old. I didn't test all the variations of codecs (HEVC vs AVC, 10 bit vs 8 bit, LGOP vs. Intra L/M/H, etc.) as that would have taken forever. But I did take one video using AVC and one using HEVC. Unsurprisingly as we discussed before HEVC will give you much smaller files for pretty much the same quality.

But one thing for those who use Premiere Pro, a complete HEVC workflow (from recording to final product) yielded not only the expected smaller resulting file size to an AVC starting file, but also on my Mac (M4 Max chip) the Premiere Pro rendering time of an HEVC starting file to an HEVC output file was like a 3:1 ratio. Meaning encoding a 3 minute long video took 1 minute. As opposed to an AVC starting file to an AVC output file which was more like a 1:1 ratio (3 minute encoding time for a 3 minute video).

Now I understand the M4Max may have optimized encoding tools for HEVC, and so if your PC or Mac uses different CPU and GPU combos, you may not be able to repeat what I've wrote. But I guess the advice I would give is: test a few codecs out and then use your software of choice to edit, assemble, and then do a final encode and see which, if any, your hardware/software combo gets along with. What I've discovered is that an M4Max chip Macbook Pro, and Adobe Premiere Pro, really gets on well with an all HEVC workflow.

Hi Carlo,

Sorry for not replying to your post sooner, I've been away all day and just now was finally able to get back to my computer,

That's great news that you'll be able to help out with the group whenever you're not too busy. I'm sure there will be more and more of us as time goes go who will be able to work together sharing information, personal experiences, resources we've found, etc., that will make this a helpful and interesting video thread. I'm really looking forward to seeing things organically evolve as we go forward. I think it's going to be terrific!

Cheers,
Rudy
