Hi Folks,
I'd like to throw out a couple of suggestions/ideas for the group to consider that might be helpful and interesting for us in a number of ways. See what you think and share your thoughts.
In addition to sharing our most recent videos here on an ongoing basis as we complete them, we could also do some other things as well. This would be helpful for those of us who aren't able to get out and do a lot of videos at certain times of the year.
Suggestion #1: A periodic "Show & Tell" day.
We have a weekly or bi-weekly "Show & Tell" day where those who want to participate will post one video they have done in the last few of years or so, and they share a bit about their experience, challenges, solutions, etc., in shooting and/or editing it. Also, they could share some things they learned from the experience and any helpful advice they might have for folks, etc.
Some of us, for a variety of reasons, can't get out on a regular basis to shoot interesting footage year round. This would give us an opportunity to share some of our past stuff with the group and to learn from each other an on-going basis.
Suggestion #2: Periodic "Video Exercises".
For folks who want to participate what I envision is this: That we do periodic hands-on video exercises that will give us an opportunity to try and learn certain video skills. These exercises would focus on camera and editing skills and techniques rather than on trying to get interesting, compelling content. In other words, we should shoot subjects that are close to home, easy to find and don't require us to take a trip somewhere. Mind you that's great if you can do it.
Here are a few examples off the top of my head...
Example 1. Shooting the sky without blowing the highlights or losing the colours.
In this exercise we would shoot a short video which would include some sunrise and sunset footage, and any other sky conditions we would like (blue hour, golden hour, mid-day). This would be a great little challenge for 8-bit shooters like myself who as yet have done very little Log footage. Of course, this exercise would require that we shoot in Log. Finally, we would post, share and discuss our experiences and findings. If we keep the videos short and simple everyone should be able to participate even those with busy lives.
Example 2. Hand-held shooting.
We would produce a 1-2 minute video that is completety hand held. This video could include the following, static subjects, moving subjects that need to be tracked, some pans, tilts, pushes and pulls, etc.
Anyways, these kinds of little exercises are very doable for all but the most crazy-busy people and they're all easy enough to do technically. I'm sure they would be fun for us to do and share and have us learn stuff along the way.
Your thoughts?
P.S. If you're not too keen on any of these suggestions or keen on doing anything like this, please feel free to say so, or if you have other ideas please share them.
Thanks,

I would love to watch this happen and follow along but not sure I can participate in the shooting exercises right now as I'm super swamped and I shoot often so it just adds to my stack. I'm mostly interested in learning the video editing process from scratch with Da Vinci Resolve starting with what to use for folder structure for best organization of content (video, audio, photo). And then, the basic workflow of converting Clog2, adding creative luts, basic adjustments, and the export process. I'm not even familiar with uploading to YouTube either so I have some work to do before I can even share anything.
Most of my footage can't be posted online but I have enough to cherry pick certain clips that can be used for examples. I should have plenty of examples from my recent trip to Indonesia where I was just filming random stuff or random people. Most of my stuff is handheld, often with the 70-200.
Some ideas for tests you could run could be the WB test we discussed with leaving it in "daylight" for sun, clouds, shade, or even darkness to see if that works, or is it any different than choosing AWB. I should have a ton of that footage to test with. Also, maybe not ideal for wildlife, but some rack focusing tests to nail down the focus speed settings so it's not too fast, and showing the examples of different speeds. And maybe some stabilization tests to show before/after shots that were stabilized in post to see just how much things can be stablized.
Anyway, whatever it is I would love to see some participation and follow along whether I can join in on the shooting or not.
