Mine just showed up with the 70-200Z

First impressions just handling it. Bigger than the R3 and the EVF is really, really nice

Mind if I "borrow" the other one on your desk, I promise I'll bring it back .

I'm still waiting for one of the reviewers to do some testing and see if the QPAF is really making a difference. I thought Jan would touch on it but he didn't. Granted Jan's sequences he showed like the Peregrine in flight was impressive so the AF looks top notch. Just wondering if the QPAF has helped the notorious MILC issue of driving the lens back to a grossly OOF near subject from infinity??

I don't believe the R1 has QPAF; rather, Canon simply rotated every other line of the AF pixels 90 degrees. They're just calling it "cross type" AF.

That one’s an R3 (I hate that I can recognize that based solely on the grip texture lmao)

That combo looks so nice. What's your thought on the R1 and 70-200 compared to the R3?

Lighthound, do you not understand what specs are? Read what you typed above, "specs". This is not just a dedicated image only thread as you are failing to acknowledge. All specs are open for discussion in a gear forum, especially in a thread that specifically calls for an open discussion on the R1 specifications.

I'm sorry you don't like my opinions on a body that I would normally buy, but feel free to skip over them or maybe try to reply in an ordinary manner like Tony did above who kindly disagreed and spoke his opinion instead of calling out

My Canon R1 shows up yesterday and I am impressed. As others have noted the EVF is amazing and I also find the grip is improved relative to the R3.

I am also pleasantly surprised at the buffer performance. At 40 fps in full RAW using Program Cobalt v4.0 cards with pre-capture enabled the camera does not pause until about 12 seconds, which gives me in theory a ~500 frame buffer.

Does it matter if using a CFexpress 4 vs 2 cards?
The camera only supports CFexpress 2.0. Let me know if you have both type of cards to compare. I assume the benefit is only when using a compatible card reader.

That's interesting because the manual indicates 230 regular RAW and 410 in CRAW. Did you actually shoot something with a lens on the camera, or was the test just black frames?

My shipping notification came in yesterday. I am out of town until midweek. Looking forward to testing it with the 100-300mm.

The R1 feels better in the hand for me. It’s a little bit wider than the R3 so there’s more room between your fingers and the lens. I pulled out the R5II last night after shooting ion the R1 for a bit and immediately felt cramped.

The EVF is incredible and has a few magnification options in the menu. So if you wear glasses and can’t get a tight squeeze to the rubber, you can lessen the magnification to see it all. I wear contacts and glasses so it’s nice to be able to quickly adjust it depending on how I’m outfitted at the time.

AF is solid. I had no issues with the R3, I shot almost exclusively with it for 2 plus years. I was playing fetch with my dog and she’s the best test for AF being a black lab. It finds her eye running directly at camera and tracks it perfectly. Even when its hard for me to see her eyes the camera can find them and tracks. The R3 did this well and better than both the Sony and Nikons I had but the R1 is noticeably better at staying on the eye once it finds it.

The 70-200 is beautiful! It’s light and lightning quick on the AF. It reminds me a lot of the Sony GM II that I had. I have the 24-105 2.8 so I knew what to expect for size and build quality but this one is lighter and noticeably so. The two lenses are completely identical in chassis. I got the white 70-200 just to easily know which is which.

I’ve been all over the place in the last year with systems. I shot with Canon for a long while from 2020-late 2023 with the R5 and R3. Then picked up some Sony gear here and there to play with and then a Nikon or two. I sold off all the Sony gear to just roll with Nikon and now I’m back to having two systems again The R1 is the best feeling camera to date. More comfortable and lighter than the Z9 and gripped A9III, Sonys best body to date.

I had two locations on pre-order for the R1 and my second one is coming on Monday. I’m going to sell it on here or just return it if no one buys it.

I received my R1 today. I had about 20 minutes to take picture of mostly House Sparrows coming to our feeders out an open window. I really was most interested in how the AF compares with the R5II. My initial impression is that it’s tracking songbird takeoffs notably better than the R5ii. I am not sure if it’s going to be worth and extra $2K for bird photography, but have literally only shot out my window thus far. Everything else you’ve read is true. The EVF is great. It’s much snappier than the R5ii in focusing, and perhaps this is what is allowing for better tracking of takeoffs.

Regarding QPAF and the camera stuck focusing on the background, I did not find the QPAF making any difference in the one test I did at home.

Perhaps your post should be over in this thread not this R1 image thread.

Oh wait, I see you already trolled that one as well.
But I do agree with you. Sony's flagship A1 II might be able to compete with Canon's 2nd tier R5II.

Can you say Quad pixel AF? The A1 II AF won't be able to compete with the R1 let alone the DR and high ISO capabilities mentioned above.

But

I can say "Quad Pixel AF".
I can't find Canon saying it though.
Could you help me out with a link?

QPAF: a micro lens covers four pixels
DPAF: a micro lens covers two pixels

R1: a micro lens covers two pixels
R1 is DPAF, not QPAF.

Yes, I found these two mentions from Canon:
Cross-type AF is included for the first time on an EOS R series body
AF System Dual Pixel Intelligent AF

I assume lighthound just a little too emotionally involved.

Thanks for this. Yes, the term QPAF (which I'm guilty of using also) isn't what is really going on with the R1.
As the article does a great job of showing it is just alternating the orientation of the DPAF sensors. We shall see if this helps with the drive from infinity to near object or not. It will surely help with horizontal lines compared to R5II but whether that translates into any differences driving to a grossly OOF bird close by when focused close to infinity remains to be seen.
