Here are a few photos from my kayak this morning. Except for the blast-off Mallard, I believe these were all at ISO6400. Noise Reduction done at level 50 with Lightroom AI Noise Reduction since DXO Pure Raw is not processing R1 files yet. The camera is definitely much faster at acquiring focus than the R5II and is more steady/sure in keeping focus. In the blast-off Mallard sequence I took, I had somewhere of 200 shots in a row with absolutely tack sharp critical focus on the eye. The bird was not completely frame-filling, so surely that helped, but overall this is a winner of a camera, with the usual reservation "I wish it were 45 megapixels." Also, there is no improvement that I'm noticing for trying to acquire a vastly out of focus subject in the foreground when the camera is locked on the background.

No ducks but a duck dog??
Loving this camera and the new 70-200Z. AF is simply stellar. I shot my daughter’s cheer team showcase tonight and the face registration is amazing. As she’s tumbling and dancing around with 15 other girls on the floor I didn’t have to worry about the camera jumping off. It found here and stayed with her so well.
However, earlier today playing fetch with my dog the camera did completely lock up on me. The EVF was black, the rear screen was black and the camera was completely unresponsive. I turned off the power switch and it still showed all the info on the top screen like it was on. It was bizarre. Pulled the battery real quick and it was fine after that.

Might be a long shot but check if you have flicker detection turned on. @stanj had a lot of lockup problems with both his R5II bodies and narrowed it down to having flicker detection on and shooting in daylight - his lockups only happened in daylight. While that was with the R5II, with the two models being released at virtually the same time and with very similar performance, it's possible they share a lot of code and it might also be a problem with the R1.

Yeah, who knows. I'm in Japan so my son is using my R1 for HS sports right now, with the 100-300 and 28-70/2.0, and is loving it. He didn't report any anomalies yet, and loves it compared to the R3 that he borrowed from me so far. I didn't have cameras like that when I was in HS...

Appreciate the input! I checked last night when I read your post and it's disabled. I've used it a lot since that lock up, and have had zero issues apart form that one instance. It didn't store any error codes either.

I posted some of these in another thread on the site, but figure they're worth posting here again too.
I am extremely impressed with how well the camera does tracking a dark subject with dark eyes in difficult lighting situations. As you can see from the photos, I was shooting directly into the sun with my dog coming towards me using the RF 85 f/1.2 at f/1.2. The camera didn't miss a beat. I found the R3 would often struggle in such situations.

ISO 20,000 on this Short-eared Owl this evening. Very close to dark. Processed with Lightroom AI Noise Reduction. I feel like the Lightroom AI NR seems to output similar noise reduction, but doesn't seem to render/sharpen as well as DXO Pure Raw does. Awaiting DXO compatibility!

Check DxO site there is an update now. I think 11-19-24 was the date R5ll files supported.
