Well he is a Nikon ambassador.

I've just published a YouTube video that walks through my Z6 III sensor readout measurements. It also provides some background information about the rolling shutter project.

How does the Dynamic Range and ISO performance compare to the D5? Just looking for a basic idea - don't need a chart. Thinking I'm finally going to update as I want to do video and I'm shooting less sports these days.

Edit: I don't want 40+ megapixels, hence why no Z8/Z9.

The photo to photos website answers this question in two clicks. TL;DR - roughly the same

I just received my Z6 III and I’m trying to configure it in the same way as my Z8.
Question about viewfinder/monitor.
I have the viewfinder set on “prioritize 1” and I expect to see everything on the monitor and when I put my eye on the viewfinder the monitor gets blank.
I see only something on the monitor when I select “monitor only”.

When I choose “menu” it shows the menu on the monitor and when I put my eye on the viewfinder the monitor gets blank. Works as expected.

What I’m overlooking?

Page 60 in the Z6III reference guide tells you exactly how each option works. Prioritize 1 - Viewfinder is working as advertised. I use “Automatic Display” and it works fine. If you want monitor only, select “Monitor only”.

That's my problem, I can't choose “Automatic Display” When I press the monitor button on the left side of the viewfinder I have 4 options
1 prioritize 1
2 prioritize 2
3 only viewfinder
4 only monitor

Grr.. Found it!
In "Limit monitor mode selection" the “Automatic Display” choice was not selected.

Great. I love my D5. Never felt like the dynamic range or ISO performance was lacking.

Very wise, don't get drawn into this hysterical nonsense. The DR penalty is modest and only below ISO800 and totally predictable. It's a funny old world.

I liked the video... I really liked he set out on a bicycle!

Regarding all the bench testing and analysis by paralysis... No camera will ever live up
to bench test fantasies. The myriad of masters used cameras that would never live up to internet expectations and yet, we worship their output.

I'm happy with my current Nikon Z cameras and won't be flipping them anytime soon.

But carry on my brothers... we all find our fun in many ways!

Any opinions on the Smallrig L-bracket
https://www.smallrig.com/L-Shape-Mount-Plate-for-Nikon-Z-6III.html?skuId=1802900592209739777

It is attractively priced but is not a monolithic. My Z6 Kirk bracket is also screwed in at the L and is rock solid, so this is not an issue per se. Not sure why it is labeled as "discontinued"

If you're not interested in the kind of technical discussion that happens when a new model is released I'm not sure where you find the time to come into one of those discussions just to tell us you don't like it ¯\_(ツ_/¯

I asked this earlier but no one replied so I will try again. Why is a fast readout associated with more noise? The charge accumulated on the photo diode is the same so shot noise is identical and so is the inherent pixel SNR. The faster ADC scan time means less time to digitize, but that in itself should not cause more noise because it just means running a single slope ADC faster. Non idealities in the ADC ramp are deterministic so they should show up as PRNU not noise. What am I missing?

Ok I design high speed adc for serdes for more than 10 years and I don’t even understand some of the terms you use. Faster adc almost always less resolution which leads to quantisation Noise. I don’t do optical sensor but I think quantisation noise will impact dr. The other more obvious thing is probably the power limit, faster adc burns more power and maybe they trade off some of the preamplifier power to maintain the power budget leading to more noise.

Boy, this whole Z6 III dynamic range thing is spiraling out of control. PetaPixel, YouTube, DPreview and others are going nuts about it with 2-3 articles about the same thing. I don't recall them making a big deal when Sony introduced stacked sensors that lagged in DR and low light vs their BSI CMOS sensors. According to Photons to Photos, the Z6 III is close to the performance of the A9 II and A7S III in DR. I watched others put the Z6 II and Z6 III side by side, over and under exposed 5 stops and had no difference in IQ. Idk what's going on here... smear campaign? If you search Z6 III on Google, the 3rd most searched comes up as Z6 III dynamic range. Searching Z6 III on YouTube, the first suggestion is Z6 III Dynamic Range. Crazy

its lower than the olympus em1mk2, the sensor 4x smaller. to be fare even though the a93 also has lower DR the mages are spectacular, so will assume the z63 will prove to give great results once a few pros post some worthy images.

Hrm, "smear campaign"? I'm personally glad—thrilled, even—to see that this product is garnering such attention, helps us shoppers know in advance the pluses and minuses of what we're considering to spend our hard-earned dollars on!

To put some perspective on this, when I was shopping for my first Lumix S1 it seemed that very few online folks could, er, "be bothered" to even look into, let alone, actually post such in-depth pluses/minuses testing like what folks shopping for Nikon gear are clearly getting to enjoy! It actually took me more than one train ride into the city and walks downtown to B&H for some actual hands-on for myself before deciding between S1 and S1R and S1H...it's sooo much easier this time around trying to decide between a Z8 and Z6III!

Edit: typo
