p.10 #1 · A1 Firmware v 2.01 is out now. On the fence about installing it though. :)
Update from Sony Customer Relations. I explained that my Wi-Fi/Bluetooth functionality were working before the 2.01 update and this is the response.
It's now clear how they will approach this: "You have no way of proving your WiFi and Bluetooth unit were working before the upgrade".
"Thank you for contacting Sony. We regret to inform you that no one can verify if the software update caused the issue of your unit and this is considered as a normal out of warranty repair. You may contact Precision Camera Repair 860-272-2100 to get a repair estimate. Thank you.

Thank you for the info from Sony which seems inadequate and infuriating.
I would like to get at when these affected cameras were made?
Did this happen early in the production cycle, late, or randomly, intermittently?
When did you buy your A1? Also new or used?
I bought mine right after the firmware update that fixed the initial eye viewfinder detection problem.
So that would be early one.
I have updated to 2.01, but have not checked yet if BT and Wi-Fi work.
Will now check into this.

That is awfull.
What a mess for those with failing wifi and bluetooth.
One might forget that it is not even a normal failure to begin with. If the main board is functioning properly and only the bluetooth or wifi fails, how is Sony going to see that as a "normal out of warranty failure and repair"?!
I can understand that it can theoretically occur, but to have multiple users losing their bluetooth and wifi whilst having a perfectly normal operating camera otherwise cannot seriously be called a normal failure.

Thank you. That’s very interesting.
I got mint in July 2021, new also from B&H Photo.
Hmmm.

What are the first three digits of your serial ? I posted mine earlier, 337xxxx. Not sure how useful as I don't know the Sony serial number system. I purchased the camera as soon after they first became available.

I have Sony Pro Support, so I get some free maintenance like sensor cleanings and camera inspections. I believe they will do firmware updates.
I may take my A1 in for my free service and ask that they:
1 verify BT and WiFi functionality,
2. update the firmware,
3. re-verify BT and WiFi functionality.
If anything goes wrong Sony should cover it. Right??!!!??

Well, good luck with that. They certainly should.
Where do you send your camera, Sony or Precision Camera?

I had thought of doing something similar. As updating firmware with a mac is such a pain I always take my cameras into Fixation In London who are also a Sony repair agent and do updates for free. I will phone them and ask if they can check the wifi/bluetooth function before and after the upgrade and see what they say

Same as mine. I'm in doubt if upgrade or not to new FW version due to unavailability/understanding what Sony want fix or not by their warranty some malfunctioning that can appear after upgrade to FW2.01.
Im writing from Italy, waiting for news on what to do.

My Serial is 512xxxx (WiFi not working on 2.01, but Bluetooth is). Purchased in June 2022 as a grey import (I assume it came from Singapore).
Ironically, the company I bought it from give a 3 year warranty, so I should be covered (Sony themselves only offer a 1 year warranty). I'm going to wait a bit and see if Sony releases another firmware update over the next few months, because I'm not convinced mine is a hardware issue (WiFi worked perfectly on 2.00)
-"Icons on the left side: Still image shooting mode, Drive Mode, Focus Area, White Balance, Creative Look"
-"Icons on the right side: Shoots a still image, starts recording movies, Face/Eye Subject Select, Touch Func. in Shooting, switches to the playback screen*"
I was going through and engaging each of these touch icons yesterday one by one when I came to the top right touch icon just below the battery indicator. Not realizing this icon "Shoots a still image" ( I had the camera in Silent/Electronic mode), I touched that icon and my camera LED/display went black. Thinking I encountered an issue, I power cycled the camera to regain operations NOT realizing I had fired the shutter without a lens attached to the camera and the camera went black because it was taking a an image at minimal no light aka black frame settings and taking some time to process the image. 😜

Is it possible to override drive mode dial via this on screen touch buttons?
You know I tried it 😎
Both Still image shooting mode and Drive Mode are not highlighted, but touchable, when touched in Photography mode:
-Still image shooting mode = "This operation or setting not available as follows..." However, touch selectable mode options available in video and S&Q mode
-Drive Mode = "You can change this setting by turning the drive mode dial"

I have spoken to Sony Pro Support UK who have forwarded the email I sent them about this issue of wifi failure after upgrade even if it worked before, to Sony Japan and are waiting for a reply. Their suggestion to me (and what I had already decided) was to to upgrade until there is more clarity on the issue. Anyway this upgrade gives very few advantages to a stills only photographer that make it worth the risk and the time to reload all my custom settings
