It is interesting that you haven't felt the battery drain.
I have 6 friend with A1 and all confirm they are seeing noticeable increase in drain.
My one friend hasn't updated yet. We shot side by side this weekend...similar shooting but not identical.
I was at 17% at one point...him at 51%.

Curious...do you use a battery grip?

All my tests have been with single battery in-camera. I have not tested battery drain with the Sony vertical grip attached to the camera yet. But will try that too with the G 200-600 test.

I think all my friend have battery grip on camera...as do I. Only my friend who hasn't updated yet doesn't use a grip.

After using the a7cii the menu uniformity makes sense, not too excited about remapping all of the commands though.

However, if the increased battery drain is a thing that brings up a question... is there a "sleep" function that I'm missing? Screens and everything time off, but if I don't physically hit the power switch it will die in a few hours.

It could just be my poor habits, but my previous a7r4 and a9 have all gone to sleep without physically turning the camera off, and maintaining battery life.

I posted this one, in-camera battery results on another thread where I paid specific attention to battery drain, and in this case pushed the camera much harder than normal during one hour nine minute event shoot. From 100% to 65% on ver 2.0 seems about normal A1 battery drainage to me.

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1853862/1#16524809

"Just to add to the various ver 2.0 battery test scenarios results posted, with very aggressive AF-C + H Drive mode shutter action during one hour nine minutes shooting a live performance ( 6383 Lossless Compressed Large images), the 100% Sony NP-FZ100 charged battery depleted to 65% using the GM 24-70 II ver .20 on the A1 ver 2.0. *The GM 24-70 II does not currently support the new ver 2.0 Body-Lens Coordinated Stabilization control."

FWIW, I've also noted via USBC tester, AF-C: H and H+ mode draws more AMPs on the battery than AF-C: L and M.

There is the Power Save Time setting (or whatever it is called). I do leave mine on 30mins so it only really sleeps if I forget to turn off the camera when I put it back in my bag. Typically I'd always be waking the camera within 30mins. I just didn't like the inconsistent wake times if I used a shorter PowerSave time.
Obviously this contributes to more battery drain than people who use a shorter PowerSave time. But I've used 30mins for a long time so that shouldn't be a factor in my battery comparisons.
My rear LCD is kept off unless I turn it on to do ground level shooting. The EVF goes off within a few seconds once my eye is away.
I'm not sure where the battery drain is coming from.

Interesting. I have the A1 set to Power Save Start Time = 1 Min during my battery drain tests so far.

Do I understand correctly, you can't get your A1 to go to sleep via Power Save Start Time settings? If so there are other settings in the camera that if engaged, will interfere with the Power Save Start Time setting.

Someone posted these settings for me recently on this forum...let me see if I can find that reference again.

The power save function is deactivated in the following situations by: @LiveShots

While power is being supplied via USB
While playing back slideshows
During FTP transfer
While recording movies
While connected to a computer or TV
While [IR Remote Ctrl] is set to [On]
When [Bluetooth Rmt Ctrl] is set to [On]
While streaming
While uploading images to Creators' Cloud

Thanks for the reply, that was the feature I was looking for. I learned something new and it was completely user error. After checking that (set to 5min), I had to consult the manual. I had Bluetooth / remote control set to "On" which disables the power save.

From Colby Brown, Sony Ambassador:

"This morning, Sony officially released the 2.01 FW Update to fix the WIFI/Bluetooth connectivity issues that a few users faced with the 2.0 update. This update should also fix the problem of a higher-than-normal battery drain that some of those users have experienced"

So the battery drain fix is for people who had the WIFI/Bluetooth issues? Not for those, like me, who don't use WIFI/Bluetooth in the A1? Is it the right interpretation of what he said?

I think he's saying these are two separate issues and the 2.01 fixes both of them...

hmmm... right now my A7RV on 2.02 goes through batteries much faster than the A1 running 1.32

I feel like a kid wanting to touch the stove...

That's what I can't get my head around, there are so many contradicting reports regarding battery drain on current gen models. I'm not saying somebody is right or wrong, but it would be nice to have some agreement on this...
Like, I think I've never managed 1k shots (non-burst) on A7III single battery, but people get that with A7CII...

There is so much conflicting info out there.

Without your scientific method - just seat of the pants I am consistently getting these results:

Best. A9II. Still pretty good - A1 on 1.32. Not very impressive A7RV

Similar use cases. All set to sleep at 5 mins IIRC. I have Airplane mode enabled on the RV. Didn't really help.

Now that I think about it - it seems to correlate to the amount of on board processing/computation going on.

I wonder if turning off subject recognition makes a difference

Perhaps those with poor/great battery life could SAVE their camera settings and post them here, that way the software/hardware can be eliminated as a problem. If someone with poor battery life used the settings from a camera that is working as designed then it may help identify the source.

Sad that there was no SD card option available, Sony could have provided all three options this time around.

Yes, that's my impression as well. Basically the "active on" time, whether you're looking thorugh the viewfinder or tracking or even browsing menus, seems to eat the battery significantly faster on the current gen compared to the previous one...

Thanks for posting.

“ This update should also fix the problem of a higher-than-normal battery drain that some of those users have experienced" This might further confirm some had higher than normal battery drain and some others including myself did not on ver 2.0. Same as I did not have any network or Bluetooth problems with v 2.0 either 🤪

Several of us will be testing ver 2.01. We shall see.

It could also come down completely to how you shoot.
Those, who reported the highest increase in battery usage, said they have the camera on basically all the time and are actively using it to get the shot. That's quite different from typical, to me at least, usage of framing the shot for 10s, firing away a couple of shots and then letting the camera sleep until the next photo...
