I notice a good 99% of people use Lowepro Mini Trekker and one with a Tamrac Expedition 4, is there a reason for that? I have a Lowepro Mini Trekker Classic right now and thinking of an up grade to either a Lowepro Mini Trekker AW or the Tamrac Expedition 4 but can not decide. I bough the Lowepro because at the time the local shop only carry the Lowepro. Anyone with pros and cons on either one?
Thanks
Le

Guess that lone Expedition 4 owner is me?

I looked at the Lowepro's, and while they looked very nice, the dividers specifically from the Expedition just seemed more sturdy, and looked like they would provide more protection.

I also wanted a backpack on the smaller side, and the Expedition 4 fit.

Expedition also provides these bumps on the back of the backpack, to allow air to flow and keep your back from getting sweaty. I really like this feature.

So far, after a couple of months, I'm very satisfied.

That looks like a Really Right Stuff or Kirk lens plate for the Arca Swiss system. Read about it at www.reallyrightstuff.com for an introduction to the system. You'll never use another tripod mounting system again.....

Here is my lowepro mini trekker, I like the weight of this bag a mere 2.8lbs. With all the equipment it weighs 16lbs, very easy to carry around

What, only 13 pages of back pack postings?

I have the number 184681 memorized. It's the FM e-mail ID for the back pack thread!

Those of you who own a Crumpler Schrinkle or Brian's Hot Tub, or a LowePro CompuTrekker, have you tried bringing it on a plane with you yet? How are they when fully loaded (gear + laptop)? Do they carry-on fine? I'm looking seriously at a BHT but it looks like it's close to being too large to qualify as a carry-on. Has anyone had any problems with this?

I just got a Schrinkle (as in yesterday), but it looks like it will carry on easily, it's just a bit bigger than a mini-Trekker.

Here's my contribution

First is my Tamrac Expedition 5. This is a really tough and comfortable backpack which will take most of my kit and a laptop for long jouneys. Very happy with this bag althoug the new version has better tripod straps and a paddded laptop pocket.

Second is my little Tamrac bag / waist pack. This is great as it is a very versatile and tough bag. It works great as a regular camera bag for short trips and holidays and doubles up as a comfortable waist pack with an in-built belt hidden in the back. This is the bag I use the most. Physically small but a bit of a tardis inside. Check out the kit I keep in there with room to spare!

This is my "essentials" kit....It's a Crumpler Schrinkle bag, 1dsMk2, 16-35/2.8 L, Contax 35-70/3.4 (especially while the 24-70/2.8 L is getting repaired), and 70-200/2.8 IS. It carries the 1.4 TC, a 420EX, remote release, and Lee Filter system as well.

I just got this bag, I think it will be a keeper. I'll try to get photos of the "loaded for bear" bag (one of the big Lowe bags), with 2 camera bodies and all the prime lenses in it at some point.

I love this thread (mostly just tagging it btw). I currently have the Velocity 7, which is great for walk around bag (small, easy to carry) but starts to hurt the shoulder while hiking. This thread has been great for me to figure out a better hiking backpack!

When selecting a backpack, you should weigh all your equipment, then add the weight of the backpack, and take a look at your total. You'll suddenly understand why that backpack is hurting your shoulders.

My kit, without the bigma, comes in at 9 pounds. Add a laptop, or a tripod, and a 4 pound pack, and suddenly your are carrying more than you think.

Very good advice Matt. I think what happened was that I grew out of it so to speak. I only had a 650, the 28-135, and the 70-210 a year ago when I got the pack. It was a nice pack because I could swing it around to the front to take the camera out (without taking the pack off at all). But now, with a 20D, 28-135, 70-210, 18-55, and 35-70 (for macro work) in there, it is much heavier.

What is a good shoulder bag to fit the following setup. I already have the Offtrail 2 but a little small, the Micro 200 is not convenient being a backpack.

Canon 20D, no grip
Canon 17-40 f4
Canon 50 f1.4
Canon 135 f2
Canon 1.4x ext
Canon 580ex
epson p2000, 4 batteries, 3 filters

Basically, I need a bag for indoor social events. May I see what photo journalists use?

Looking at the new Tamrac Expedition 5, it does not mention any storage for a notebook and it also does not come up in there computer compatible search. I am looking at the 5575 and 5275 model. Am I looking at the wrong product?

Also does it come with any weather cover?

I have Brian's Hot Tub ... filled it with gear and a laptop for a ski trip to Colorado a couple of weeks ago ... fit in the big jets just fine ... slips into the overhead with no probs ... puddle jumper up the hill ... different story though those planes get jammed with ski gear anyhow so it was no big deal to find a spot. Have to say that it's a tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight fit for a larger laptop ... i have a Toshiba Satellite A75 and it barely fits. Really stresses the zippers. The hot tub really looks bigger than it is ... it's real sturdy though ... I love it... use it for plane travel ...

I am almost reluctant to show my bag, since I have only had my DSLR for a few days.
Here is my bag with the labels for the gear I will purchase within the next 2 months.

Sorry...temporarily stuck on a dialup line so downloads are excruciatingly slow!

Anyone combine a 17" laptop with their camera gear? If so, what do you use?
