Congratulations on getting a great copy! I've had a similar experience with this lens. It appears that the tolerances can be quite tight with this design. The good news is that, starting with the CV 35/1.5 Nokton, the new 28/1.5 also enables precise adjustment of the rangefinder by simply adding or removing shims from the back. You don't even have to remove the lens mount for this adjustment. Although I didn't find it necessary with my review copies, it's reassuring to know that the option is available if needed.

Thanks! Just ordered the LH-6 hood now that I know its a keeper. In the past when I traded/sold Voigtlander lenses, I just kept the hoods since they don't sell for much. I have quite the collection at this point

I still hope we get a 28 APO-Lanthar. I think it would make a great pair with this 28 1.5.

I wish they offered a LH-6 black paint version.
Not sure what's coming next from Cosina, but we'll see an announcement very soon.

I will be super surprised if we get a 28 APO-Lanthar as the 28 f/2 Asph II came out quite recently. That said I don't seem to ever be able to predict what Cosina/Voigtlander decides to make.

I didn't expect a 28 f/1.5 either!

My thoughts as well.
If Cosina thought they could correct the Ultron II better, then I would have expected them to go for an Apo-Lanthar model instead.

How could they not better correct (including less vignetting and swirl wide open) the Ultron II with a larger lens with floating elements?

Fantastic lens and itching to pick it up but still undecided due to the Thypoch 28mm 1.4, we need more reviews on that lens.

You would have to ask the lens designers at Cosina, I guess.
I expect they thought the Ultron II is the result of their best effort.

We still haven't seen a 28mm apo-lens in M mount, no matter what brand or price, and I expect there's a reason for that. The only 28mm lenses with apo-designation I know of are the Zeiss Apo Distagon DSLR lens and the Leica Apo-Summicron-SL lens, and both are quite big, particularly the Zeiss which is simply huge (and f/1.4).

Woke up early this morning to get some Valentines Day groceries. Took the M11 with the CV Nokton 28/1.5 attached.

The 28 Ultron is a best effort only relative to the size and cost limitations associated with the market positioning and original design intent of the lens. There are so many more things they can improve: mechanical vignetting, corner sharpness at infinity wide open, midframe sharpness at MFD wide open, microcontrast across the frame wide open that would match the 35 and 50 APOs, etc.

As to size, yes it could be that APO-Lanthar level of performance in a 28mm focal length would result in a lens that is deemed too large to be acceptable for most M users. In that case, my hope would be we at least get an 28mm f/1.4 Nokton that has an FLE design.

'deemed too large to be acceptable for most M users' and many are disturbed if they can't also have very light lenses. These are also the primary design filters for all new Cosina full-frame lenses in the early '20s - an opaque form of institutional capture. They could have been a great company but they chose this road instead.

The thing w the Ultron v2 is IMO Cosina unnecessarily went with a 39mm filter size, regulating the front element to be very small. Resulting in the vignetting. The Leica 28 cron is a 46mm?

Or they simply wanted the lens to be small and shaped like a candy corn, resulting in a front element which works with a 39mm filter

I'm fine with Voigtlander's quirky lineup, I just want them to finish out a set of APOs that hit 28/35/50/90. Maybe a 28 APO could be a non-Lanthar APO like the 90.

If you're not into shooting film, I strongly suggest considering the M10-R BP. However, it might be a bit challenging to find one.
I use mine daily and there is no patina showing anywhere yet.

Not a bad idea, not only because it's a gorgeous camera, but also to get out from under the M11 series firmware woes. My M11M functioned flawlessly until the latest 2.0.2 firmware, which has introduced random corrupted DNGs and freezes for me and many others.

^ I don't recall: is it possible to roll back Leica firmware? I guess that would be too simple...

On a recent thread (this one?) Ashwin mentioned touching up a VM 28/2 v2 with black enamel paint (Testor's for model kits, IIRC). Time to fire up the airbrush and apply it to the LH-6 hood!

Yeah, the only reliable Cosina prediction is that they're unpredictable. 28/1.5 didn't overly surprise me because it's a gap in their lineup and also one that wasn't well addressed in the M system. It was only Leica and later 7Artisans (or TTArtisans?). But now we also have the Thypoch option. Cosina is not shy about stacking a slot with multiple variations, and variations of those variations. 50/1.0, 50/1.1 (discontinued?), 50/1.2, 50/1.5 Nokton (SC, MC and silver, black and panda variants), 50/1.5 Heliar, 50/2 APO, 50/3.5 Heliar.... 35/1.2, 35/1.4 classic (SC, MC), 35/1.5 (Type I, II), 35/2 (Type I, II), 35/2 APO, 35/2.5; 40/1.2, 40/1.4 (SC, MC), 40/2.8; 75/1.5, 75/1.9; 21/1.4, 21/1.8, 21/3.5, 21/4.

28mm, until recently only the 28/2, was well underrepresented!

IMO the obvious gap is at 24/25mm for fast, semi-fast and something slow, small and modern to replace the ancient 25/4 that I guess was discontinued some time ago. So at least room for two lenses and the inevitable Type I and Type II black, silver and BP options for at least one of them.

The other gap is a fast 90. Here they could go modern APO and/or old school dreamy Heliar. Heck, Leica has four options at 90: Nocti, Cron, Macro and Thambar, plus the discontinued Summarit versions and old Elmarits, etc. Would be cool to see Cosina take what they accomplished with the 50/1.0 a step further with a 90/something APO Ground Aspherical. But a 'character' fast Heliar would also be interesting.

I suppose it's all dependent on perspective. Cosina is currently a great company if you're into M lenses. Not so much if you're a Sony user looking for something new from them. Cosina seems to follow the currents of what is hot, or where there are available niches. Given Sony's popularity and strong market position, there are a lot of third party lens brands making lenses for FE mount that IMO has drowned out the niche Cosina once had there for their manual focus Voigtlander lenses. Many probably prefer AF and otherwise are more willing to accept manual focus if it's cheap, which is precisely where the Chinese upstarts are positioned.

Yeah, can't roll back the firmware. I imagine Leica can roll it back if you send it in. Easier to wait for a firmware update.
