Re: Voigtlander 28mm f/1.5 Nokton Review | |
^ I don't recall: is it possible to roll back Leica firmware? I guess that would be too simple...

Thanks! Just ordered the LH-6 hood now that I know its a keeper. In the past when I traded/sold Voigtlander lenses, I just kept the hoods since they don't sell for much. I have quite the collection at this point
I still hope we get a 28 APO-Lanthar. I think it would make a great pair with this 28 1.5.

I wish they offered a LH-6 black paint version.
Not sure what's coming next from Cosina, but we'll see an announcement very soon.

LH-6 black paint on brass!
On a recent thread (this one?) Ashwin mentioned touching up a VM 28/2 v2 with black enamel paint (Testor's for model kits, IIRC). Time to fire up the airbrush and apply it to the LH-6 hood!
Yeah, the only reliable Cosina prediction is that they're unpredictable. 28/1.5 didn't overly surprise me because it's a gap in their lineup and also one that wasn't well addressed in the M system. It was only Leica and later 7Artisans (or TTArtisans?). But now we also have the Thypoch option. Cosina is not shy about stacking a slot with multiple variations, and variations of those variations. 50/1.0, 50/1.1 (discontinued?), 50/1.2, 50/1.5 Nokton (SC, MC and silver, black and panda variants), 50/1.5 Heliar, 50/2 APO, 50/3.5 Heliar.... 35/1.2, 35/1.4 classic (SC, MC), 35/1.5 (Type I, II), 35/2 (Type I, II), 35/2 APO, 35/2.5; 40/1.2, 40/1.4 (SC, MC), 40/2.8; 75/1.5, 75/1.9; 21/1.4, 21/1.8, 21/3.5, 21/4.
28mm, until recently only the 28/2, was well underrepresented!
IMO the obvious gap is at 24/25mm for fast, semi-fast and something slow, small and modern to replace the ancient 25/4 that I guess was discontinued some time ago. So at least room for two lenses and the inevitable Type I and Type II black, silver and BP options for at least one of them.
The other gap is a fast 90. Here they could go modern APO and/or old school dreamy Heliar. Heck, Leica has four options at 90: Nocti, Cron, Macro and Thambar, plus the discontinued Summarit versions and old Elmarits, etc. Would be cool to see Cosina take what they accomplished with the 50/1.0 a step further with a 90/something APO Ground Aspherical. But a 'character' fast Heliar would also be interesting.

These are also the primary design filters for all new Cosina full-frame lenses in the early '20s - an opaque form of institutional capture. They could have been a great company but they chose this road instead.
I suppose it's all dependent on perspective. Cosina is currently a great company if you're into M lenses. Not so much if you're a Sony user looking for something new from them. Cosina seems to follow the currents of what is hot, or where there are available niches. Given Sony's popularity and strong market position, there are a lot of third party lens brands making lenses for FE mount that IMO has drowned out the niche Cosina one had there with their manual focus Voigtlander lenses. Many probably prefer AF and otherwise are more willing to accept manual focus if it's cheap, which is precisely where the Chinese upstarts are positioned.
