I don't agree with many arguments here but let's don't mislead people.
The reason why A1 (or Z8/Z9 for that matter) gets some slack for missing full mech shutter is because their fast sensors allow them to use electronic shutter in nearly all conditions. It's only in special cases (e.g. faster flash sync for A1) that mech shutter gets any use at all (and it should have been full mech for the price )...

I would be surprised if you agreed with the lot of absurd arguments earlier in this thread. But you are right; I shouldn't have mentioned the A1 half shutter in this context.

I do however still feel sad on behalf of the forum when thinking about the FE 600/4 argument...

I think why the A7CR is not selling like hot potatoes is its price. If it were closer to the A7CII it would sell more (of course). The A7CII topped Mapcamera's bestseller list [...]

I agree. The camera simply is too expensive when comparing the feature set to other cameras in the same price range.
As I live in the EU I'm used to the Sony price policy here.

Now that didn't stop me from pre-ordering and buying the A7CR. My last camera was the A7C making it easier to accept the obvious shortcomings of the A7Cii and A7CR.

I knew I like the size when having attached an Arca-Swiss compatible bottom plate, I knew the viewfinder works for information and framing, I don't care about the screen as I never use it. Now i plan to keep the A7CR until they have figured out how to make a global shutter sensor with more pixels. That's life when preferring the combo FF camera, small size and a lot of pixels.

I can speculate in the total Sony revenue if they had decided for a lower price as well as anyone else. Perhaps it would have been better. My guess now is that we'll see more frequent periods with cash-back offers and such. The A7CR will probably sell well enough. It's a very cool little camera in my opinion.

Right. Maybe the A7CR, sandwiched between the A7CII and A7RV is never envisaged by the company to be a hot potato. The hot potatoes are always something like the A7IV which is designed and priced more as a Swiss army knife/jack of all trades. It's good enough that the A7CR meets the need of and can capture a segment of the market.

Does the A7CR have an AA filter? DPR’s results of their studio scene sure seem to indicate that it does. Or there’s some other reason for it not being as sharp as the RV. More testing is needed but an AA filter would push me to the bigger brother.

I'm not sure if those sources are necessarily authoritative / credible; they seem more like 'content farms' to me. I'm not sure if this has been officially confirmed by Sony.

Speaking of why I'm not yet buying the A7C R: I want it in Silver; it looks amazing and is absolutely preferred for me over the Black version. However, I live in Australia, and the Silver version is not available here

The Black version is available for a great price -- A$3900 including our 10% GST; which translates to US$2367. So I don 't want to import it from the USA -- US$3000?? Really?

I've seen some A7C skins, but the ones I've been able to find look a little cheap.

The greenish fringing visible all over suggests that the lens was front focused.

With all the moire I get when checking my lenses my guess is No filter.

I'm perfectly happy with my CR. Just as sharp as my RV, but a lot more discrete with small primes like this 35/2 Sigma.

I'm sure that's the case. But with the current deal on the A7rV (Instant $400 off and $500 trade-in bonus) I'm leaning that way now.

Having used it for 2 weeks, my takeaway is that the A7CR is really powerful for its form factor.
The weight savings are nice, even if the size doesn't actually feel that much different from the A7RV.

However, the improved compactness only manifested when I swapped to compact lenses / APS-C lenses. When using larger GM lenses, it felt no different than I was shooting with the A7RV. So yes, like what many have said already, the lenses will decide if the A7CR form factor makes sense. I will need to build a kit intentionally around the A7CR to take advantage of the C.

Other differences that were perceptible to me were:
1) The max fps and shutter sound. On the A7CR, the shutter is significantly slower and louder. Maybe I'm too used to 10fps, I felt like I was missing more shots at 8fps despite the better AF.
2) The way AF selection is implemented. Due to the lack of joystick, it does take a bit of getting used to. There are some tricks like using a touchscreen-based AF selection, or converting the DPAD to focus selection, but they are clunky at best.

The rest of the differences felt minor, but I do often wonder if the a7rv makes more sense for the price.

(I am aware of all the discussion related to the a7cr and a7rv from several threads. Just wanted to share my personal exp.)

I meant a real "Swiss Army Knife" camera. No company has this, but at least they don't have some 15-20 camera models on the market at this moment, like Sony.

The A1 is quite literally that camera — what isn’t it suitable for?

Umm. There are 200 some different Victorinox Swiss Army knives.

I would think the price is the primary deterrent for many potential purchasers. And we'd all like it to be less expensive. Otherwise, bigger body works better for some, smaller body works better for others.

There is no feature, apparently, that's a universal deal breaker because folks by and use both.

The only real swiss army knife in the Sony line up is the RX100vii which actually will fit in my trousers pocket. Stacked sensor as in the A9 and A1 with all the benefits (20fps, blackout free viewing and silent shutter), 24-200mm equivalent lens, pop up EVF and in built flash. There is nothing quite like it to have always on you in such a small package

With EDU pricing, the A7RV is currently selling for about $300 less than the A7Cr at B&H. $2718 vs $2998.

Not quite sure, but I see many A1 users asking/hoping/yelling/begging for an FW update, so it might be missing something (against the lesser models).

I don’t even see 2998?

$2998 is the price they are selling the A7Cr for. $2718 is the EDU price on the A7RV.

I don't know if it is much of an issue really but it, like the A7iv, predates the A7Rv subject identification improvements, etc.

The A7C R can already be obtained for ~$2150 USD equiv direct from Sony Australia in store via special pricing* (I purchased it earlier today). Great price, very cool little camera.

* Participate in a (usually free) Sony-sponsored event/workshop from Sony Scene or Georges, ask for 'exclusive discounts', and they'll give you wholesale pricing. I asked for prices for other cameras (A7R V, A7M4, none was as discounted wholesale as this).
