Thanks for reminding me why I frequent FM less and less. Comments like this make it just another Sonyalpharumors.

I think the issue is that the A7CR is kind of a boring camera that doesn’t really appeal to any major customer segment well. It offers very little new to the A7RV besides price and there are other cameras out there in the market that appeals to individual customer types a lot better.

Even if the A7CR isn't your cup of tea I would say it's certainly not boring.

I have cameras with just one slot and one with 2…never had a card failure and have never used the second slot. But I’m not using the camera for business and we’ve established that a ”pro” would want 2 just in case.

YMMV, but *any* camera with only 1 card slot is simply not an option.

Good stats but these sorta live in a vacuum by brand:

I don't think it says much.

p.9 #5 · Why are people not buying Sony's Swiss Army knife "A7cr"

I think there are two discussions here about why A7Cr is not so popular:

One is for people which compare it to the A7RV and consider the weight/bulk difference as not being significant when compared with the compromises Cr brings along;

The other group (me included) asseses the (lack of) features of the new Cr (and Cii for that matter) compared with the A7c (so this group of photographers likes the small form factor of the "C" line) and decided it is not worth the upgrade due to same shortcomings being propagated to the new cameras. If I would be in the market for a compact "C" camera now, I would probably still choose A7c @ 1200 EUR vs A7cii @ 2200 EUR vs A7cr @ 3500 EUR given the specs of those cameras. But, of course, this is just me :-)

I think why the A7CR is not selling like hot potatoes is its price. If it were closer to the A7CII it would sell more (of course). The A7CII topped Mapcamera's bestseller list (One of the largest store in Japan) in November while the A7CR was not in the top 10. The α7R V was in the 5th place suggesting the buyers were willing to buy expensive cameras but somehow they perceived the A7CR's performance price ratio was not as attractive (of course this is a YMMV situation):

1st place: α7C II
2nd place: Osmo Pocket 3
3rd place: Z 8
4th place: Z f
5th place: α7R V
6th place: α7 IV
7th place: EOS R6 Mark II
8th place: GR IIIx
9th place: FX3
9th place: α6700
9th place: EOS R10

You are onto the issue right there, the performance to price ratio for cameras is akin to the power to weight ratio in sports cars/bikes, these are fundamental aspects of such products. Sony have always been big askers. RX1 is another example. If memory serves, I recall Juha in Japan was posting recently that some CV lenses were popular (or not so) in Japan due to price being a major factor.

It's obviously personal - I think $US3000 should buy a near-perfect camera, at least for its major components, with a clear range of use cases. Here, it seems to be the resolution and a kind of lifestyle allure as the big appeal of the a7CR. If you restrict the comparison to high res highly capable cameras:

Nikon Z7II is just $2300 and is just 615 grams. Against the a7CR, Canon's R5 is just $400 more, the a7r5 is $500 more, a7r4 at the same price as this one, all US asking prices. There is not much any of them cannot do. The market is maybe getting close to being saturated for new cameras with so many brands/models involved. And the a7CR might still go great, for all we know. But that's the competition right now..plus the happy existing Sony users.

I shared the same Map Camera stats as well as Yodobashi Camera stats earlier on this thread (page 3):

It's a similar trend in both stores where A7CII is at top #1 position and A7RV has been outperforming A7CR. It may be helped by an ongoing cash-back campaign that Sony has currently, where you can get 50K yen cashback when purchasing A7RV + some additional cashback for lenses. It brings down the price gap between A7CR and A7RV to some extent.

Where I live I can pay 25% less and get a Canon R5, ~7% more and get a A7R5 or 10% more and get a Z8. Yet I get no joystick, no CFA slot, no eye cup not to mention evf resolution and no stacked sensor or full mechanical shutter. This makes it very easy to skip the A7CR even though I like the concept. Would love a super light high res camera for shooting landscapes on strenuous hikes.

Sony must be worried about too low A7Cr price cannibalising A7r5 sales. This high resolution category in a little crowded in Sony line-up, as there is also A7r4 available (at discounted prices right now).

It is all about marketing and managing camera line-up. I do not believe that there is a meaningful difference between cost of manfacturing A7CII and A7Cr. Both use a sensor that is a few years old and produced in large qualtities. A7CII seems to offer much more camera for the money right now.

This!

I have been hemming and hawing about what body to add to my A9, which I'm going to relegate to field sports. Choices were used A1, Rv, Cr or wait for the A1ii. For normal and telephoto landscapes, family and events, the Rv just will work better. Even for travel, I am going for the bigger body because of superior IBIS with my FE85 and Tamron 28-200. The only situation where I'm really going to wish I had the Cr is street shooting, which I don't do often, and for which I might just use the A9 anyway because of the stacked sensor

...and Sony is a champ at doing exactly this. And this very thing might (or, better, will) turn exaclty against them (Sony). This A7Cr is just the (first) proof.

I remember a couple of months back there was a discussion (and a video on YT, IIRC) about exactly this topic: Sony has way too many camera models on the market, none of which is "a master of all", and deliberately "forcing" its customers to buy more than one camera to satisfy different shooting situations.

They need to keep a roof over their employees heads so you'll get whatever camera does that most effectively and fits in with past and future models.

Personally I feel that there are certain specs that shouldn't be skimped on.

I guess Sony knows best on this.

Who has this “ master of all “ camera and when you say for all…who are you referring to?

To be perfectly honest, I just love Sony's decisions as they simply work against my GAS. And this is absolutely perfect for me (and I really mean that!). I have the A7Riv and A7c, and absolutely no reason to upgrade at this moment (and I don't mean that I don't NEED to upgrade - because this is the truth in 90% of the cases - but I don't WANT to upgrade, and this just means killing my GAS).

I meant a real "Swiss Army Knife" camera. No company has this, but at least they don't have some 15-20 camera models on the market at this moment, like Sony.

I would call the A1 the "master of all" cameras from Sony, especially if action/sports are one of your uses. Best camera I've ever owned by far.

But- the A7cR can hold its own in a variety of shooting situations as well, especially with the attached grip.

I think the bigger question is how many people shoot in a diverse set of scenarios. Seems like many have a niche that they primarily shoot in, whether it be travel, wildlife, sports, portrait, etc. Sony's offerings give the customer the ability to buy a body that's geared primarily towards that use, with the ability to do other things in a pinch. The A7cR as well as new A9III are great examples of that IMO.

You are right. I’d much rather have a specialized set of cameras that meet specific shooting conditions than one camera that does not quite excel at anything. Sort of like the jack of all trades, master of none saying.

Jack of all trades master of none, but oftentimes two million dot is better than one.

Was the original saying I think.
