Your last comment on Sony is Sony... yes, so it is. Never hold your breath if waiting for something from Sony. We need to be happy with what we get. If not we'll be forever frustrated. There is a long list of "Where is the...".

That's an approach I will never get into.
I have just picked my poison: carrying a full size, fully satisfactory performing camera instead of a crippled, smaller, rangefinder-style camera (which I happen to love, from a form factor point of view).
Of course I got frustrated by the launch of those Cii/Cr cameras given the fact I wanted a "small, travel-friendly, rangefinder-style" camera to be able to use also with my Voigts 40/1.2 or 50 APO, and to serve me as a second camera body alongside A7Riv. Now, if I am going to have a second camera, will also be a full size one. Most likely a used A1...

Jeff you learned to compromise better than most. I knew buying this that for me and Pro work not the best tool but I decided to lose the 6700 and have at least a FF cam to match whatever I rent for gigs to have FF glass for it. So you compromise as only so many models available too . Not a big deal for me and I will go ahead and rent what I need for work stuff. I wanted more a personal cam and I feel this is the best option for small and light. Trust me I was the first to bitch but when you way your options and figure out what you need than it’s all good. I knew I was buying the issues at hand on this model. I’ll still get great images

Chacun à son goût. I have been waiting for a light FF rangefinder camera with high MP and fast focusing. The buttons are not ideal, and the EVF is not what I had (the rIV), but after using the cr for a while I don't even notice the difference. I find it fine. For me at least the cr hit the five most important criteria I had in mind. To close with another cliche YMMV (and that's fine).

Well been at this a long time but folks will defend what they bought. That’s pretty common and understandable. You need to know the limitations of products and see if you can compromise around it.

Every camera one purchases has compromises. If the A7cr doesn't fit into one's compromises...then look for another camera. I personally value camera weight / size coupled with great AF and high resolution very high on my list and things like a great VF lower down and 2 SD card slot way at the bottom...so the A7cr looks like a great camera given my compromises or priorities.

If you shoot in the landscape mode, the viewfinder of the A7c R is not bad. But if you shoot in the portrait mode, it feels awkward since the viewfinder is in the bottom plus the right hand is a little bit too high for my taste. Often time I just use and rely on the LCD screen and it works fine that way. Lately though if I still want to use the viewfinder, I flip the camera that way that my right hand is on the bottom. It works better reminds me of my time in the past of using a Leica rangefinder. That's my only way of shooting a rangefinder camera vertically.
BTW, I enjoy the camera as a travel camera. It is just perfect for that purpose, at least for me. I understand that your mileage may vary.

Does anyone remember when the NEX-7 came out? That was about 13 years ago. It was my first mirrorless and first EVF. It was also the first I remember people talking about an EVF actually being better than an OVF. Rave reviews.
Yeah, that was a long time ago but it was essentially the same as the EVF on these new A7C models. I had zero complaints about that one so I think I’d be fine with this one too.
The real problem is that there are no higher resolution screens made at this physical size because nobody besides Sony used one on a small high resolution full frame camera body. They improved the optics as much as they could, I assume. Now that this smaller screen has a high-end market, I suspect they will throw some development money at this and we will see a bump in the EVF resolution with the next gen. Maybe they’ll improve the optics more also.

I am not sure about that, you maybe right. But reading this thread, I think Sony could make A7c a tad larger, and people would generally be happier. A few mm to height and width would give enough room for improved EVF, and Sony could still advertise it as "words smallest full frame".

I well remember the Nex 7; in fact I think it was my favorite camera of all time. I still have mine, and don't want to get rid of it although I seldom use it today. I do disagree that it was the same EVF as the on the new A7C's. It's similar but the newer ones are much better.

I’d much rather Sony produce both a very compact full frame camera with limitations like the EVF and a larger full featured cameras…this allows me to choose their poisons. If we try to include the missing features in the A7cr then we end up with a camera much the size of the A7r5, which really defeats what a compact camera is all about.
Sony offers a lot of different cameras. One just needs to understand their priorities and pick the camera which best meets those priorities.

Very good point. I value the smaller size over the "missing" features that would satisfy everyone, but make the camera bigger. Why complain about the A7CR when you can buy an A7Riv or v?

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I suspect the newer ones are better for a variety of reasons but the resolution and magnification are the same or very close.

Sony has form here: in a rerun of the early RX1 days, it appears add-on grips, thumb pieces, even a wooden grip are (maybe) selling well.
As a form of amusement in a staid industry, photographic movements can be fun to observe as they gather pace. The non-collapsible Voigtlander 50/3.5 will soon take its place alongside the 'clean top panel NEX' precursor to this present a7cx iteration. Wait until Leica put an EVF inside an M camera!
Sales data are, for some reason, a very well-guarded secret. In mass consumption societies, people do what others do, like schools of fish all turning in the same direction.

Yeh, I find it weird. Many want the same features that are in the A7r5…just buy the A7r5. If you want something more compact…then some features have to go. The size of the A7cr is it’s main feature.

Just a comment on the small viewfinder of the A7CR/A7CII. Until recently I still owned my Fuji X-E3 with the same range finder style EVF in the upper left corner. I had owned the X-E1, X-E2, X-E3 but not the X-E4. They all had similar resolution and size. Sure a better EVF is always desirable but these compact cameras have a home in the ecosystem and I support their development.
