I've rented an A7C R for an event I'm covering this Sunday and while the size & weight savings is cool, I don't think I'll be buying one. The viewfinder is so small! I don't have an issue with the resolution or anything, but simply the size and magnification. I didn't anticipate it bothering me as much. I've also got the 40mm and it's not as small as I thought it'd be on this body. On an A7R V it feels as small as I expected it to be, but on the A7C R, not so much. The activation of the EVF takes a lot longer than it does on the A7R V, which is strange and the buttons are mushier too. I would love to know how well this unit is selling. A great idea on paper but I'm struggling with the execution.
I wish we had stickied threads for ongoing camera conversations because I do feel a little strange reviving this thread but less strange than I'd be starting a whole new one

From industry figures I have seen it appears that the A7CII is selling quite well, but the A7CR, at about 10-20% of those sales.
You were smart to have rented the A7CR. I made the purchase some months ago and have the same annoyances that you experienced.
The small buttons are not only mushy, they are annoyingly recessed. The tiny, low-resolution viewfinder and small LCD make me feel like I am shooting a ten year-old digital camera. On the positive side, it is quite small, which gives it some utilitarian value, for me, as a second camera body in my bag. It does serve as a stark reminder, however, that almost everything in life represents some sort of compromise.

I like the A7CR. Bought it for travel and with M close focus adapter I can fit 4 lenses into my Peak design 3L bag - Voigtlander 28/2.8, 40/2.8, 15/5.6 and Zeiss 85/4. Besides, got it for A$3.6k (USD 2.4k) new, which was a steal.

I still like mine. For the past few weeks, I’ve been using it with my Monster Pentax to Sony adapter and my Pentax Limited lenses. With the latest adapter firmware (Version 4), AF is really fast (for screw drive lenses) and accurate.

I've had my CR for some time now, and find I still like it. At my age I need a small camera, and even though I have large hands I have no problem with the buttons; I just wish there were a couple more (buttons that is, or maybe more hands too.) Regarding the VF and LCD I was expecting to return it for all I had heard and read, but I have been pleasantly surprised -- and I came from the RIV. The 61 mp has the obvious advantages of making all lenses two in one by switching to 26mp when needed. I have coupled the camera with the Sony 20-70 and it makes an excellent all-around-walk-around kit in itself, when the full component of lenses is not needed or expected.

Me too, took it oversea's, with the 20-70 and 40G and exceeded my expectations. Like it so much I decided to sell my Leica L mount kit and add the a7rV to the stable. I think the a7cR is the best travel body (along with my m10R) that I've ever used. The new G lenses are brilliant, small, durable and crystal clear. So nice to have eye focus on at the local markets and quick/easy street shots. Yeah, I love this little "Swiss Army Knife" still

Nice to hear. It’s the camera I’m looking for my travels and I focus my photography on people. I would think the advanced AF would excel in those situations.

Much as I dislike the small, low magnification EVF, it's still usable. Having taken the camera on it's first trip now, I think it's a brilliant thing for travel.
Chez, the advanced AF it one of the things that makes the camera as usable as it is. Frame, compose and trust the tracking AF. I don't even miss the joystick anymore.
I have an A7RIV in nearly new condition - think I'm going to sell it. That was never the plan, but when I try to be rational about it, I'm not sure I would take it instead of the A7C R.

One more thing to add. The only thing I don't like is the fold-out LCD. I would prefer the one that pivots up and down on the camera. I'm also with Blueshound, the AF is excellent.

Since purchase my A7cR has done Maui, Punta Cana, as well as some random stuff around town. It's been perfect for those applications, as well as for a number of upcoming plans. But- my A1 & 70-200 II will live in my bag for our daughters upcoming track and lacrosse seasons. In some instances both kits will get used the same week. Like lenses each body has a use case, and the A7cR and A9III, IMO, push that theory more than bodies in the past.

The extra resolution of the A7cr is what got me leaning towards it over the A7c2. I shoot primes and the resolution allows for cropping between my prime focal lengths.

This was me as well. When you're out and about with a small body/lens, you might not have a lot of reach on your focal length to ensure a small lens, nor want to swap lenses, meaning some cropping room helps.
For how you travel I have to believe this is the perfect body. I also liked a few weeks ago that I was able to walk around the Dominican Republic with the A7cR & the 28-60 and not attract a lot of attention.

I will say having just shot a big event with both cameras, I did appreciate it more. I had the 35GM on it the whole event and as you guys mentioned, you don't even need the joystick. I got so accustomed in the one shoot to not having it that I'd forget I did when swapping over to my A7R V

This is why I went for the cR. Great with primes to toggle between FL's , also great with my zooms, my 20-70 is basically a 20-105 and so on. I have my c1 programmed with APSC/FF and toggle all the time. It's SO convenient.

Even if you only need ~26mp, the A7CR lets you
1) Crop a FF image extensively (See below for associated benefits)
2) Use APS-C lenses for more overall weight savings
3) Add an electronic shift function (like a tilt-shift lens) when used with an ultra-wide-angle lens.
4) Get sharper and less noisy photos by binning/downsampling either in post or in-camera (e.g. m-raws), assuming a good algorithm is used.
5) Shoot multiple equivalent focal lengths with a single prime lens while enjoying the f1.4 goodness (in terms of light-gathering capabilities)
6) Get 1.5x more reach when shooting wildlife and sports
7) Access to 61mp when you need that resolution occasionally, and pixel shifting when you really really need that resolution.
