These are absolutely stunning!!! Seems like 300 + 2x works well for action shots too!!
Yes it does. Even for some swallows in flight. This is what impressed me a lot as I don't trust nailing action shots with the 2xTC on the 400GM or 600GM.
How would you say the hit rate and IQ are with the 2X teleconverter?
Better than any of my other lenses I've used the 2xTC on (400GM/600GM). I don't even bother using it on those two lenses anymore.
But with the 300GM I was happy with the results. Not as good as the 1.4TC or bare lens for AF hit rate but still good enough when needed.
IQ was very good with the 2xTC.
I have my 400GM up for sale and as soon as it sells I'll be replacing it with the 300GM. I'll save the extra cash for the A1II

Thanks Geoff!
Great to hear! Because I already ordered one!
Should be here tomorrow 😊
You wouldn’t happen to know if the RRS foot for the 200-600mm fits on the 300mm?

I will message you directly when I need a 300 hood (if my 400GM ever sells) and send my friend your way for his if he wants one. He has your hood for his 600GM.

True! I have never been satisfied with 2x TC on 400 or 600. It does work fine for video though but for stills the only one I can trust is 1.4x TC... even with 1.4x there is a bit of image quality loss but works fine.

Nice.
How is the AF with the adapted lens on the Z8?
I haven't had it too long but so far it's surprisingly snappy. I will post more images here as I get them. I couldn't believe the weight of this thing, that's what tempted me into getting it

Based on a few shots this eve, it's pretty sticky but not quite at a native lens level. It misses a few shots here and there during a burst. Definitely happy with the lens though, picked it up strictly to adapt.
Only had about an hour to test this out so far, 2x never left it. Its not 600F4 with the 2x but its a nice lighter alternative. Spent some time 3d modeling as well.... hood is good to go, just need to give it some time in sun, cap is close.

This 300 is something special. I’ve previously owned the other two you speak of and I was a bit underwhelmed with its price Vs performance compared to the cheaper 300. The insect and airplane AF has also been an added blessing. I love it so much, I just traded my Canon R3. But not like I’d be able to afford their 100-300 nor would I want to deal with that extra weight.

What length of hood did you go for in your design? Will it be possible to order a custom even shorter length?
