I'm seeing a lot of stellar images shot with the 300mm GM and the 2XTC. For those that have experience with the 300mm with 2XTC and the 200-600 at 600mm is it worth the upgrade? I am trying to decide between adding a 300mm GM to my Sony system to replace the 200-600 or adding an 800mm PF to my Nikon system as an augment to my 600mm PF.
I hate the idea of being limited to 600mm (300 with 2X), but I am not using the 200-600 and using the 600mm PF instead.

To my eye, I don't see a lot of difference between my copy of the 200-600 and the 300mm + 2x. I bought the 300mm more for its ability to be at f2.8 in lower light situations. Personally, if I were you I'd get the 800 PF and maybe add a 200-600 later, unless you foresee situations in lower light (then pick up the 300/2.8).

For me it's all about the weight. I never take my 2-6 out anymore and am in the process of selling it. I never use a monopod or tripod . I realize it's only 1 1/2 pounds heavier but if you lug it around all day while hiking it can get annoying.
A question about the Function Ring on the GM 300mm f2.8:
I just received my GM 300mm and cannot figure-out how to program the Function Ring; or for that matter, what it even does.
The Sony instructions are not helpful. I have performed Google searches on the subject and the only thing I can find is that it only works with the A9III(??).
I sold my A1, and having pre-ordered the A1 II on Nov 28, it appears that I might be waiting until mid-March before receiving it. In the mean time, I just have the A7RV to utilize.
Can anyone shed any light on the Function Ring?
Thank you!
Jeff
PS: This lens is amazing! I wonder if I will ever use my 200-600, again.

It is very limited on the A7RV (same as A1 on pre-2.0 FW).
Either FF/APS-C switching or Power Zoom in video.
On the newer cameras it can also be used for Preset Focus 6 set and recall. But I don't think the A7RV ever got this update via FW. The A1 got it in 2.0 FW. The A9III and A1II will have it.
With that function you turn and hold the dial for a few seconds to register and then do a quick turn and release to recall.
With a lens like 400GM or 600GM that have a dedicated focus preset button on the lens then I think the ring can recall that focus preset even on the older cameras like A7RV. But the 300GM doesn't have that dedicated button on the lens.

This is correct! Although personally I found it frustrating that Canon changed the function and layout by default on the 300GM. Until the new firmware was available you couldn't use the function ring for preset AF and even now that you can, setting it is different than how you do on the 400 and 600. Odd choice for the 300 IMO but maybe that's the way they are planning for the future versions of the 600 and 400 as well. Easier to control the function via firmware vs. the wiring and hardware for a dedicate button the lens.
