When has Leica ever done what the masses wanted.
With the SL series. The SL was released to match the move to mirrorless cameras and move more towards the video-centric market. But Leica then also had to compete with pricing of other brands in this segment which remains a big culprit for this series.

Sorry I should have been more specific and said Leica M.
Yes, the M has been and will be unique for Leica. Even a future "EVF M" in parallel to traditional future M rangefinder-based cameras won't change this assuming this camera will allow 100% compatibility with M lenses.

Ignoring the price for such "EVF M" camera, I would also belong into this group of 50%. It would not replace my rangefinder M but be an addition.
+1 ... not a replacement.
Mostly, I think that folks who struggle visually with seeing the patch well would be the folks who might be a market.
Alternatively, if you think about it ... the CL was a gateway to the M mount, never the main line. An EVF M could be another form of a gateway / bridge for those who are using M lenses via adapters on non-M models.
For those who are seasoned M shooters, the appeal of an EVF is low, mostly because they're already well seasoned without one.
If the CL was a Compact L mount ... an EM could be an Electronic M mount (no AF). As a former CL user with M lenses, I would have liked a FF version in M mount (vs. adapter).

I'd love to have an EVF (in lieu of a rangefinder) in an M body to compliment my M10. I really enjoy shooting 35mm and 50mm lenses with a rangefinder. For wider glass the RF focusing is great, but framing is challenging. For longer glass, the focusing and framing would be better complimented by an EVF. I own the clip on EVF for the M10 but it's honestly an ergonomic dog and functionally just gets the job done for framing.
My first foray into M glass was with some ZM lenses on a Ricoh GXR. That was the best darned way to use digital aids for manual focusing. Being able to effortlessly toggle between magnified and full screen views with a dedicated button, and using the black and white high contrast focusing (rather than color peaking) with half-press of the shutter button was amazing.

+1. Fortunately I am not (hopefully not too soon!) in the group of vision-impaired users who struggle to focus with a rangefinder patch - but it is one good reason to trust EVF instead. But I found by using EVF MLC and OVF in parallel that there are some situations where one is better than the other. For example for close-up and macro work, I definitely prefer EVF - it does not help me to see outside the frame lines in a rangefinder in this application. Focusing in such situation is much more accurate with EVF and magnification tool, too. For night photography on the other hand, I definitely prefer OVF due to better image clarity. For landscape and also for portraits, I have used both successfully equally.
The CL was indeed a gateway to the M mount - but I doubt the same will apply for the "EVF M". The CL was much lower priced and therefore alone a good gateway - I am pretty sure this won't happen with an "EVF M" even manufacturing cost should be less than for a rangefinder M with more mechanical parts (which for Leica's pricing is likely being ignored and not cascaded down to the customer). IMO the "EVF M" falls more into a category of specialized M-mount camera like the monochrome series or M-D series.
I enjoyed watching T. Overgaard's video where he analyzed the current M11 as prototype of such "EVF M" and how easy it is to replace the rangefinder here with an in-camera EVF which fits the same size as the current hot shoe-placed external EVF. I believe this analysis is correct.

Maybe gateway isn't quite the correct term ... more of a transition from M glass on non-Leica adapted mirrorless to a proper M mount, and proper cover glass and proper micro lenses.
Those folks have already entered the gates of M mount glass ... just need the EVF to facilitate what they are accustomed to.

Anyone interested in the tech for manual focusing that Nikon have released with the new Zf? Basically it allows eye/face focusing with manual focus lenses. I think this is REALLY interesting tech and I think it'll be adopted widely by other brands before too long. The enthusiast market are interested in adapted lenses and this makes it easier to focus quickly and accurately in an EVF.
I think this would be a killer feature in the SL line and any proposed EVF body for M lenses.

I think it might be very useful on my Sony A1. Not so much on my M11 as I almost always shoot through the Range Finder.

Hi Gordon,
Do you know if this works with adapted lenses without electronic contacts?

I have read reports that it does. I think all focus calculations are done based on sensor data so communication between lens and camera isn't required.
"This is the most advanced Nikon for shooting with adapted lenses, it has a very helpful feature wherein it uses the power of its amazing processor to help track your subject when using manual lenses. I guess it’s merely decoupling the code that does this with autofocus lenses, enabling you to use it with manual glass adapted with a dumb connector (mount adapter)."

From the videos and reviews, when using a dumb adapter, it seems like the camera directs the focus point to the selected 'subject detection' option. There isn't a focus confirmation; it simply guides you to the area where you should manually focus. This makes the process faster compared to using the directional pad.

This alone would be a good reason to get the Zf and sell SL cameras.

I'm not sure. I haven't played with this function. I have resisted getting a Zf. And it's been very VERY tempting. But I don't need another 24MP camera and I never use my Z7. So far I've resisted, which is rare for me. I even played with one in the store for a few minutes and didn't buy it. But damn it's a nice camera. I see absolutely no comparison to the SL2 at all frankly. It's more like a big beautiful XT-5.
Plus I've been back from Mongolia/Japan less than two weeks and have picked up three new cameras already. ??
