My goodness I love this lens so much, and that's just after shooting with it for a day!

Somebody needs to talk me out of this lens . . .

Are those cropped from the original file?
I assume not with extension tubes?

Slight crops on some; dahlias vary wildly in size, though I'm very happy with the magnification and close focusing distance of this lens. (No extension tubes).

I just pulled the trigger on this lens. I ordered a 105 MC macro lens with my Z8 but decided to return it in favor of the Plena to pair up with a 50 f/1.8 S, along with 24-120 and 180-600. Looking forward to posting here.

Congratulations for this wise decision.

In my opinion it's worth every penny because it doesn't just have the modern side, resolution, extremely high level of optical corrections and all that directly at f/1.8, but the complete rendering, the quality of the sharpness transition, the smoothness in the bokeh, color reproduction, plus objectifiable factors such as resolution, contrast, freedom from abberation are absolutely world class.
The Plena is one of the few lenses that not only excels in the areas of resolution, consistency of resolution across the entire image field and the level of optical corrections, i.e. in the measurable, objectifiable criteria, but also combines this with a rendering quality and harmony that I have not yet encountered at this level.

Ok, I'm probably not the most objective person to talk to about the Plena, as I enjoy this lens with every pore.
However, I can't for the life of me imagine anyone not being flashed by this outstanding lens.
All in all, it is the best lens I have ever screwed onto one of my cameras in around 45 years, whether SLR, medium format or MILC and there were several high end lenses of their generation in a comparable price range among them.
The Nikon engineers themselves say better than S-line and even rank it above the Noct as their masterpiece so far, this is undoubtedly a bit of promotion for the launch, but funnily enough it's not even exaggerated.

Of all the Z lenses I own, the Plena is the most perfect in terms of the harmony and quality of the rendering, the least clinical, the most organic looking, although it is also the Z-lens with the highest resolution measurements.
That doesn't mean that you can't also get into situations where the Plena is sometimes too much of a good thing.
But overall, if the situation and the photographer are right, the lens is a masterpiece.
This is perhaps the most critical point about the Plena, the possibilities of this lens clearly exceed mine.
However, this also motivates me to go out and do justice to this world class tool.

Got my lens yesterday, but couldn't try it until this morning. Here are my first pics wide open. All of these have some Denoise in LR and color profile set to Camera Standard in LR.

The Plena balances nicely on the Z8 and should compliment my other primes, 20 f/1.8 S and 50 f/1.8 S. As a previous Sony user, I am very happy with the Nikon colors!

Anyone tried deep sky astrophotography with 135mm Plena stacked and tracked? couldn't find too many pics on astrobin, thinking to get one for my upcoming trip.

Astro is not my topic, especially as the conditions in my region are not good for it.
Too densely populated region, too much industry, too much light pollution, mostly cloudy.
But there were two articles about astrophotography with the Plena on NR.
The first article from an extremely experienced astro photographer who is well versed in the field of astro-equipment and who is absolutely enthusiastic about his astro experience with the Plena.

https://nikonrumors.com/2024/01/21/using-the-nikon-nikkor-z-135mm-f-1-8-s-plena-lens-for-astrophotography.aspx/

https://nikonrumors.com/2024/02/10/another-nikon-nikkor-z-135mm-f-1-8-s-plena-lens-review-for-astrophotography.aspx/

Considering the optical properties and the optical correction level of this lens, there is hardly anything better for astrophotography in the 135mm f/1.8 range.
Whether color aberrations, coma, extreme resolution and sharpness consistency right up to the edges from f/1.8, lack of field curvature, the basic requirements that this lens has for astrophotography are currently unmatched in the full-frame focal length range.
In addition, the vignetting behavior is outstanding for this performance class of lenses, which sets completely new standards in this area.
We are talking about 0.55 EV @ Infinity and 0.36 EV Vignetting values at close range, measured @ f/1.8 in the Photographylife review.

Appreciate the info! I have very high expectations for this lens when it comes to capturing large deep sky objects. Everything I've read has been full of praise, so it might be time to finally get one!

I too feel the 135 Plena is an outstanding lens, but I own the S .95 Noct as well and I have to say the Noct is in a league above for the ultimate in clarity and colors, plus it's buttery smooth out of focus rendering. However the Noct is a completely different lens to the Plena in that the Noct is a very heavy and slow manual focus only lens.

I’ve been wondering how well Plena would perform with an extension tube as a semi-macro lens? Has anyone tried this?

Since I have the Z MC 105/2.8 VR S for such cases, I haven't really been interested in the combination with the extension ring and Plena so far.
However, I still have a Kenko 10mm extension ring lying around somewhere.
As soon as I have time, I'll take a few test pictures with the 10mm extension ring, but there are other projects on the agenda for the next few days.

I've already posted some pictures in the MFD range without the extension ring here and the Plena doesn't show any weakness in the MFD range either.
Therefore, extension ring(s) would certainly be an option with the Plena if you don't necessarily need a dedicated macro lens.

However, if you are mainly interested in the macro range, the Z MC 105/2.8 VR S is probably the better choice.
Especially as the Z MC is also an outstanding lens optically and is certainly one of the highlights in the Z system in this respect.

Unfortunately, I don't use it enough at the moment, which is also due to the Plena.
Without the Plena, I used the Z MC 105 as an all-rounder, landscape, portrait, family & friends, macro.
The Plena has taken over the all-round part in the focal length range, especially as the f/1.8 option gives you much more creative freedom.
That's the disadvantage of having too many beautiful horses/lenses in the stable.
But I agree, the Z MC 105/2.8 is optically outstanding, and if you look at the price during the Nikon discount campaigns, in the EU it was often available for €799 (which even includes 19% VAT) as an official new product, with a 5 year Nikon Germany guarantee, then you get an incredible value for your money.
Similar to the Z 50/1.8 S, it is one of the lenses that punches above its weight.
