However, I still have a Kenko 10mm extension ring lying around somewhere.
As soon as I have time, I'll take a few test pictures with the 10mm extension ring, but there are other projects on the agenda for the next few days.
10 mm is a too low extension for a 135 mm lens ... maximum magnification could be around 0.20-0.25X ...

Yes, probably.
Unfortunately I no longer have the 16mm Kenko extension tube, which was originally a 16mm + 10mm = 26mm Kenko set that came with my used Z 50/1.8 S.

Thank you for the replies regarding putting extension on the
Plena. I’m probably going to buy 36mm of tube (24+12), which will raise the 0.19x native mag to about 0.45x.
I do have the excellent Z 105 Micro, sort of. My wife is usually using that as her primary lens. I’m just looking to throw a couple rings in the bag and play around with some close up with the Plena and stay out of trouble.

If you can cope with the dimensions/weight/price and of course the focal length, then the Plena is an absolute dream.
As a photographer who is only partially portrait-oriented, I have always loved 135mm and have much more use for it than for my old 85/1.2 L, regardless of the decades and technical advances that lie between the lenses, only in terms of focal length.
It's simply a lot of fun, has an exceptionally beautiful, harmonious rendering and is much more versatile than many people assume.

Me too, but it also correlates strongly with the light.
The image with f/8 is backlight/grazing light of the setting sun, which models much better.
The flowers have this slight glow from the backlight of the sun in the outer areas and the center of the flowers is not directly illuminated by the sun, which also gives more structure, gradations and shading.
In the second image, the sun is in the background, shines frontally on the flowers, which makes it look flatter and less vivid.
In addition, the bee in the first picture is a better extra in the scene than the mini beetle in the blurred area approaching in the second picture.
Upper third of the picture, to the right of the center.

Ha, thanks for mentioning the beetle in the second picture, I spotted it now. Hadn't seen it before...
And yes, light is different, but for me mostly the difference is that in the first picture I'm kind of standing "inside" the flowers, whereas the second picture is more "abstract"... Hope I explained it not too abstruse.

Snapshot portrait of my brother.
Really quick shot on a walk with three dogs and a short break in the shade of a tree on a park bench, not even really good light, harsh midday light, in a nature reserve where the dogs have to be on a leash, so also plenty of crop to crop out the chaos of dogs + dog leashes, so a photo taken in a hurry, but what the Plena still manages to tease out is simply amazing.

The Plena takes on some Friday Night Lights while covering some local high school football action.
Usually have the 70-200/2.8 on my second body, but figured I'd shake it up and to see how the AF speed and how the rendering would look with fans in the background. Overall - AF speed seemed acceptable....really didn't have a lot of situations to take advantage of the either 135 or 200 in DX mode since most of the action was further away.
But - the handful of shots made it worth it and will be taking this along in the future as an optional 3rd lens when the situation warrants. I can definitely see this being ideal for indoor sports!

Finally got a chance to use the Plena for a senior pic session yesterday and she did not disappoint at all!
A little backstory....portraits is not my main photo genre, but I do make some beer money here and there with it. To tackle this love-hate genre, I've used/tried all the prime and zoom combos imagined. 35G-85G combo, 24-70 and 70-200 zoom combo, 58, 105...you name it...I've probably done it and since it's not my meat and potatoes....I rarely can settle on any combo. My current line up was going to be the 35G-85G combo, but got a case of GAS and added the 28/1.4G, revisited the 58/1.4G, and the coveted 105/1.4G as a three-lens lineup.
Well - not content with my f1.4 glass.....I acquired the Plena and I think I've found the silver bullet for portraits.
Even with not using the 105/1.4G for a session yet...I think it's days are numbered here in the Nikkor stables!

Let me know if you ever sell that 105/1.4E .... I sold my 105 1.4 for the Plena and I do miss the 105 at times.

Back on the grid iron with the Plena.
I'm considering shaking things up next week...thinking of only taking only the Plena and leaving the 400/2.8 and corresponding body behind. I feel that will make me look at different shots based on the focal length limitations.

I had no intention on buying a Plena but if it's going to be on a refurbished sale and Nikon's doing promotional codes to knock $500 off the thing I'll take a Nikon Plena.

I had the GM for years prior to this and yeah. Nikon was late, but F it they won. I think this thing renders a lot smoother compared to the GM. It was sharp, but I don't think it rendered this clean since it was a cats eye machine by comparison.
