Sony has unveiled the 70-200 f/4 Macro G OSS II, a successor to the original lens introduced to the market nine years ago. This upgraded version boasts significant enhancements across various key aspects. It is now smaller and lighter, delivers faster autofocus, introduces macro capabilities, and captures sharper photos compared to its predecessor.

The second iteration of this lens is 15% shorter and lighter than Sony's initial 70-200 f/4 model. Weighing in at 794 grams (28 ounces) and measuring 5.8 inches in length, it also supports Sony's 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. Moreover, when paired with the 2x teleconverter, the lens enables full 1:1 macro capability, while offering half macro capability across the entire zoom range.

The focusing system has undergone a significant improvement, incorporating Sony's latest linear XD focusing technology. With four of these motors integrated, the 70-200 f/4 Macro G OSS II achieves a 20% increase in focusing speed compared to its predecessor. The use of two motors for each of the lens's focus groups allows for improved autofocus tracking precision and enhanced overall speed. Sony promises approximately double the tracking performance during zooming when compared to the previous version.

An updated version of the 70-200/4 G is supposed to be released this summer and I'm wondering when the pre-release reviews will start showing up?

I don't think they usually appear until the lens has been announced, as in many coincide with the announcement.

This is definitely a lens I'm excited for. I'd be a bit surprised by the July 12th announcement though - weren't just preliminary specs leaked a little while ago?

For those who've been Team Sony for a longer time, what sort of lead time have previous lens announcements had? I'd love to snag this before a August trip.

It doesn’t seem like enough leaks for an announcement in a couple days, but maybe. Once it is announced you can check availability at B&H, I would typically say a couple months after announcement.

It would have to be really good for me to give up the flexibility of the Tamron 28-200. It's such a useful lens and even faster at the wide end.

I don't see a use case for me personally. For light and casual - the Tamron. For blazing AF and IQ - the 70-200MK II.

If it is tiny, light and super sharp I suppose you could make a case for pairing with with the 20-70F4 but I guess it remains to be seen.

I see it as partnering perfectly with the 20-70. I've currently got a Sigma 100-400, but would love to replace that for hikes where I just need some reach. Combined with the crop potential on the A7RV to push out beyond 200mm, this would be an ideal lens.

Especially if it supports teleconverters. One of the things I really appreciated about the Canon 70-200/f4L was the support for the 1.4 TC.

I saw a photographer using what might have been one at the US v Wales Women’s soccer match yesterday. Form factor looked consistent with something like a 70-200/4 but body looked different than the current model. Given that I was in the stands, and he was on the field, I don’t know for sure what it was, but I raised an eyebrow.

Would be an interesting development as it could point to updated superteles with integrated TCs. There was a rumour of a 150-400 F4. If that lens had a built in 1.4x, it would be tremendous for my use.

That was one of 4 lens-body combos that shooter had. Yes, they had the 400/2.8 GM for principal shooting. The potential 70-200/4 was for close ups of the team when they were standing in a row and being introduced. They also had the 300/2.8 G and a wide angle...maybe 35GM.
