Usually I walk out the door with a bag full of lenses but ever since I bought the 70-200 f/4 I really haven't given it a fair shake. Yesterday it was the only lens I took with me and I'm quite pleased with what it did. These are just two of many images I took with it. All hand held. In fairness I've never held nor shot the f/2.8 version but I'm liking what this one produces.

Love this shot Al! Great colors, texture and composition - well done! I’m thinking about getting this lens too and selling my 90mm macro. I rarely need 1:1 with autofocus and this 70-200 f/4 ii macro would be far more versatile and useful to me. I also have the Voigtlander 110 macro for the rare times I need 1:1 reproduction. Sounds like you really like the 70-200 f/4 ii.

I've really grown to like it and I'm finding out how versatile it is. And it isn't all that big which is a bonus!

New member sharing some pics I got from this gem of a lens since I got it when it was just launched back in 2023. The compact size and basically unlimited range of focus distance means its just ridiculously versatile....I've packed it almost everyone of my overseas' trip.

Was this lens always $2000? I remember it being $1200 or $1300 at release, or did I dream that?

Yeah. Too expensive. I switched to 20-70 as my main lightweight lens and was thinking about replacing my Tamron 35-150 with this so I have more focal length coverage and overall lighter kit, but at this price I will gladly wait 3 additional years for tariffs in the US to go way.

Hello everyone,
I am curious about this lens for a very specific application and I'd be grateful if some owners could chime in with their experiences:
Photography of butterflies and other insects (bees etc.), including in flight, preferably with a 1.4x TC.
How is the IQ and AF with the TC for this specific class of subjects?
Do you consider the working distance sufficient for butterflies when they are active in the day? (i.e. not asleep at dawn or dusk)
Thank you and have a great day.

Late to the party, but picked one up today. I am impressed. First with its size -- it's totally small enough to travel with, will fit easily in my small shoulder bag. Its performance is outstanding wide open across the range; and while I've only had it a few hours, adding the 1.4x detracts little from what I can see. It may lose a hair with the 1.4x attached, but even on the A7R6 final results appear impressively sharp. Oh, and the macro performance is a very nice addition! Did I mention how relatively small it is? Here are a few quick grabs with it. Only 2048 px jpegs, so view accordingly for actual IQ reference...

Isn't it remarkable both in quality of images and its size? Did I mention its size?
These images were all taken in 2026...from the Grand Canyon NP, White Sands NP, Savannah, GA, some local fall color, Canadian National Parks...it was a great year for my wife and I.

I understand the f/2.8 version is outstanding in its own right but after using its little brother I'm less tempted to pick up one of those.
