First, image quality, that's primary. Next is weight. I have the current 70-200 f/4 which I believe to be underrated by many. It weighs 0.5lb less than the 70-200 f/2.8 GMII. The GMII is known to have superb image quality, likely better than the current f/4. If the new f/4 is really, really sharp, and especially if it's significantly lighter than the GMII, I might want it. I have the superb Sigma 105 f/2.8 macro so that's not terribly important to me. If the new one is not a significant step up, I might just go for the new f/2.8 GMII.
We'll see once it's reviewed by a reliable source.

Hard to estimate scale of the diameter from the SAR photos. If I had to guess, the lens I saw seemed like a 58mm, or at most 67mm thread. The pics on SAR short but fairly wide.

One thing that is a bit different in the leaked photo is the old 70-200 f4 had a 45 degree sloped angle coming from the mounting flange that stopped halfway then turned forward. Meaning the area inside was more restricted. With the new version the 45 degree angle continues to the full width, just like the 70-200 f2.8 lens (both versions). This might mean that a TC can now fit with the new lens, I certainly am hoping so.

SAR says external zoom
Not sure what SAR is meaning to say. They say it is external zoom "like the current lens" but the current 70-200/4 is internal zoom.
I guess we will find out tomorrow morning.

External zoom has its pros and cons. It's compact and much easier to carry than a long lens, but it needs some protection if it's raining or snowing, which impacts usability. Once I was shooting my RF70-200/2.8 @ 200mm in sleet which stuck to the barrel, and later I couldn't collapse the lens back to 70. All my pictures ended up being shot at 200mm. Crazy stuff.

Recap from that video above:
Extending zoom
Filter size: 72 mm
Weight: 794 g
4 AF actuators
Macro 1:2 throughout the range
Compatible with TC 1.4x and 2x
Without aperture ring
Tripod collar (without Arca support)
High distortion, low vignetting, low breathing
Really good stabilisation
Looks good, can't wait for the EU price (and then wait for the drop...)

I once had the AF Micro Nikkor 70-180/4.5-5.6 ED D, which was a very nice lens, except for screw driver AF, i.e. an AF motor in the camera body powered the AF mechanism in the lens. Looks like this new lens may be a modern incarnation of the old Nikon classic, this time with quad XD linear motors and TC compatibility.

So it is external zoom and therefore they should have got it down to the size of the RF 70-200/4. If not...not an achievement at all. SAR was saying as small as the RF 70-200 f/2.8...better not be that big.
However, if it is more RF 70-200 f/2.8 size then the justification will be working with TCs and having 0.5x vs 0.28x for the Canon
f/4 version.

Looking forward to checking out reviews, because on paper, this is the perfect landscape tele zoom. I would’ve loved internal zoom, but this packs better.
At $1700 though, I will have to revisit in like 3-5 years lol. Glad I got my squat Canon 70-300L for cheap.
A future landscape kit with a 20-70, 70-200, and maybe 16/1.8 sounds terrific.

Ability to use a TC is a huge selling point plus macro . Looks pretty darn good too
I personally will stay with my 2.8 unit but this looks like a winner so far

Apparently the 2x TC results in full 1:1 macro capability throughout the range. That means, you theoretically have a 140-400 focal range that can produce 1:1 magnification. That sounds like it could be very interesting.

Just about the same size/weight as the Tamron 70-180mm.
Tamron- Weight: 815g, Diameter: 81mm, 149mm
Sony GII-794g, Diameter: 82.2mm, 149mm.
Taking Teleconverters is a pretty big draw (1.4x would mean a ~100-280mm F5.6), but that would put this lens + converter at over $2k. I'd like to see the IQ with the teleconverter. If it is as good as the GM 2.8, that would be a nice package. Otherwise, the Tamron + Sony G 70-300mm would provide essentially the same stats for much less $$.
Has anyone seen if the youtubers (or even better a written review) discuss the teleconverter performance?

I can't imagine this being as good as the 2.8 version but hey happy to be wrong on that. Fact is you don't get 2.8 on this lens so the 2.8 unit will always have a plus side to it. But for the hobbyist that maybe traveling or on outings this sounds great and the bonus with the 6700 you get 300mm
