I would say that the bokeh is really quite soft and pleasant on this from reviews I'm seeing. A really good upgrade vs the old 70-200/4.

I can't imagine this being as good as the 2.8 version but hey happy to be wrong on that. Fact is you don't get 2.8 on this lens so the 2.8 unit will always have a plus side to it. But for the hobbyist that maybe traveling or on outings this sounds great and the bonus with the 6700 you get 300mm
Right now I'm thinking that those two lenses are mostly aimed at different audiences. One spot where this could be an awesome lens is for anyone making video of small wildlife. Throw on a 1.4x or 2.0x TC and you get 0.75 to 1.0 reproduction with much faster focus and focal length than the 90mm F2.8 Macro.

This has got to be a pass for me. I have the gmii and I thought this would be significantly smaller but it's not and if I were to sell to gm ii right now I would save net about $500 purchasing the new g lens. It's nice in Sony's part to update it and add some quiet significant features such as macro and tc compatability. Maybe when it hits the $1000 used I'll try it out and see how it fits in my kit.

That threw me off as well, I thought it would be much smaller and I do like internal zooming. MY 2.8 version is so good it is impossible to give up while im still at this

Very preliminary impressions of a lens I'd been anxiously awaiting to possibly replace my version 1. For starters it may be smaller, but it's not significantly lighter than the original. It does not have internal zoom, a really nice feature of the version 1. Forgetting price for a moment (hard to do, I know) it's only 0.5lb lighter than the incredible GMII f/2.8. The review at Petapixel, brief and a pre-production model, does indicate some softness in the corners, may or may not be significant.
I'll await some reviews by folks I trust, not random you tube people, to make any decisions. I use the version one for landscape, often at f/8 and it seems pretty sharp to me. It may appear that to get any significant improvements, I'll need to bite the bullet and get the GMII.

Same here plus the weight is near perfect and there's not even that big of a weight difference plus I use the 2x tc and it still produces amazing images. Sony hit a home run with gm ii in every area except price hahaha

I would like to test it at least. The review Chris did was F4 and F8 and completely ignored 5.6 for the corners. That I don't like at all. I want to know what 5.6 produces
The biggest turn on here is the use of TC lenses
The biggest downside is the External zoom ring
Let's assume its better than Version 1 and let's also assume it's maybe better than the 2.8 Version 1 zoom. Is it worth the switch and at 1700 is it worth it. I just don't see small enough is the other downside. Trying to throw some points out there for others. Im set with my 2.8 but this maybe a tough call for some.

Price is always relative to each of us and how serious we truly are. Its something I don't put in my decision process and for some its top priority.

This. So happy with the f/2.8 GMii version, but nice release. Great to see that it can take extenders.

I have the 70-200 GM II but would like to get something more compact for travel. I went to Portugal few months ago and bought a Batis 135 specifically for the trip, I didn't want to bring the 70-200 GM II with me. I will wait for more reviews, I may get one when the price hits $1300.

I have done that myself. The Batis 135 is the best in the Batis lineup and the size of the 135 is a winner for travel. I know myself I would not sport a 70-200 zoom for travel. Don't sell that Batis 135 just yet

I sold it as soon as my trip was over, lost $200. It was a last minute decision to buy it off eBay because there wasn't one for sale on the B&S here. I owned the Batis several times, great lens for sure.

I think they're maybe a bunch of us that bought it more than once. I think I had 3 trips with it myself.

That's what I've been doing as of recently. The Batis is relatively light, seems to have great AF, and fits in my bag nicely.
Don't use it a ton, but it's svelt enough for those times it ends up being needed vs having nothing long'ish at all.

My thoughts too.First reviews look good and despite the lens has not outstanding IQ, it will likely perform very good in the real life.Low weight, closeup facility and built quality will add up to it's versatility.Too bad it has no manual aperture ring as latest G lenses do.And the price here is insane - equivalent of 2140 Euro (sic!).Sony apparently seems to lose their contact with reality. This is also true with G 20-70/4,(1690 Euro),when it comes to price/performance ratio. This I dare to say after my preliminary testing.

This has to be a lens of compromises, you have its big brother if you don’t want to compromise,
Compact, macro and teli compatible are outstanding features
Stabe and DMF are great features
Outside of pixel peeping I am sure the IQ will be excellent, so it’s just the cost and external zoom, and for me the compactness is better than internal zoom,
16-35, 20-70, 70-200 f4 will make for a great set of f4 zooms
I am very intrigued by "half macro (0.5x) at all focal lengths". Makes a compelling alternative to the Sony 90mm and Sigma 105mm macro lenses if you don't need true 1:1 repro. I'd wager that for most people 1:2 is enough.
The price is steep for an f/4 lens. For sports the Tamron 70-180 may still offer more bang-per-buck at f/2.8.
