p.31 #1 · The new Nikon Z8 vs the Sony A7RV and potential A9III

Well, I bought a slightly used z8 and it will be here tomorrow, if UPS does its thing.
I plan to compare it with my Sony a1 and see which one appeals to me more.
One thing I love about the a1 (other than amazing AF) is the customization - it feels so natural after just a few days' use.
I know exactly which button to press for what purpose.
With the z9 when I had it, all the shooting banks, custom this and that were overkill/confusing.
Hopefully this time around, I'll learn the z8 a bit better.
One thing I loved about the z9 and even z6ii and z7ii - ergonomics, LCD panel on top and a camera feel vs an electronic toy feel.

Yes, the A1's customization is a big deal, and the easy access to the exposure compensation dial too. I would hate to have to take my eye off the EVF and go through several steps to change the compensation.

Why would you need to take eye off the viewfinder to adjust EC?

I have easy exposure compensation on. In this mode, the main command dial adjusts exposure compensation without pressing any dial (in aperture priority mode, which is what I typically use). The vertical grip's main command dial also mirrors this functionality.

I shoot manual aperture, shutter speed and auto ISO very often, the dials are reserved for adjustment of the shutter speed and aperture, if I need to change the exposure compensation, I can just use my thumb to move the compensation dial, super easy. I am not familiar with the current Nikon setup. I guess once you are used to it, it's not big deal.

So you hold the EC button and spin the command dial...why on earth would that require your eye to come off the evf?!

Probably no one... but this whole discussion is more about providing context around the crazy hype posted by Sony Rumors.

They will surely need to have an asterisk saying “for full frame cameras in RAW” if they try to claim most FPS.

Does that require two fingers?

Of course. Not sure what that has to do with the EFV.

That's still one more finger than the Sony requires. Seriously, enjoy you Z8, I may dip my toe in Nikon again if and when I have enough $$ for their 600 TC.

p.31 #10 · The new Nikon Z8 vs the Sony A7RV and potential A9III

I used both a1 and z9 last year, and found the a1 to be far easier to use in terms of customization.
z9 menu system - the fact that someone has to create a 1:22:56 video about it, should show how confusing it is

I am sure, like Douglas mentioned above - once you learn it and get used to it, it'll become second-nature.
But, as an unbiased (I love both Sony and Nikon and still shoot both) user of both cams, I like how easy it was to customize and use the a1.

Now if only Sony stopped creating such plasticky looking and feeling camera bodies!!
They have amazing designs in Playstation and Xperia phones .. but then they use interns for camera design

My main concern with Z8 is the sheer size of it. I found the Z9 to be way too heavy for regular use.
The Z8 is 30% smaller, but it's almost the same size as D850, which I thought was a huge DSLR.
I'll find out tomorrow evening, whether I like the size and feel of the Z8 vs A1.

Let us know what you think. I owned the Z9 for a year and used it along side my A1 with a grip and was too big and heavy but thought if I also had a smaller version for travel I could work with it. I had pre-ordered the Z8 but in the end cancelled it because I already own 6 digital cameras and decided I should sell some unused stuff first. My fried using a A7RV did buy one and he loves it but he used to shoot Nikon with D850.

For me the Sony A1 bodies do not feel plastic but I guess that’s a personal thing. On Nikon I don’t like the bank system on Z8 and Z9. Prefer the Sony.

I actually like Nikon's way of EC. On Sony, I often turned that dial accidentally, then I disabled it, and when I really wanted to turn it, it became so hard that I realized that I probably locked it. I ended up mapping the neighboring button to EC so that I do it the same way as when I operate D850.

The latest Sonys felt dense and solid to me. I think one can grow to like both at the same time, or at least tolerate.

p.31 #13 · The new Nikon Z8 vs the Sony A7RV and potential A9III

I had a chance to use a friend's Z8 at a party this weekend. Focus was set up exactly how I have my a1, so I could just pick it up and shoot.

It's a very capable camera. Tracking is great, it feels good in the hands, and it was enjoyable to use. It's quite larger than the a1, and the experience in no way made me think of getting one. But for Nikon shooters, I think it's a no-brainier.

Man, you sound like a head case.

First, I don't think people know who you blocked.

Second, I doubt they care even if they know.

Just remember, you are not the center of universe.

I suppose assuming someone is smart enough to realize they never get a reply from me despite quoting my posts daily is asking too much, you're right.

And if you ain't the center of your own universe, you're working for someone else

You get quoted because your posts are everywhere. Sometimes it contains agreeable bits that quoting it saving people effort of rephrasing. If you think whoever quoted you expects a return in agreement, only a self centric people thinks that way.

I said no one cares even if they know. Maybe I should add that no one even cares to know.

I thought in this day of connected society, everyone is working for someone, otherwise how do you get paid, unless you are one of those $0 shoppers. What you wrote just reflects the self centric mentality without substance. And what I meant to say in the previous post is that no one is going to treat you as the center of universe, whether you want to be or not.

Anyway, I don't think anyone else on this thread cares keeping on seeing this. So let the official programming continue.

When you've been around as long as I have or have helped out as many people as I have, you can have such opinions of my contributions. Until then buh-bye, sweetheart.
