So that means it will shoot RAW files at more than 120 frames per second?

I'll take it if it also has pre-capture in RAW.

No shot its over 24mp. I'm guessing 24mp with 50-60 fps. New AI chip + pre-capture. There was a rumour from SAR a couple months back that the A9iii would also lack the new screen from the A7RV and would have crippled video features. I wonder if its too hard to get a 50mp sensor to push out more than 30 fps, so they need to use frame rate, resolution and video features to differentiate the A1ii from the A9iii.

Which camera does 120FPS in RAW currently?

120 may be the # of AF calculations per second?

The Olympus OM-1.

Even the ploddingly slow Panasonic GH6 can do 75 fps with 25mp RAW files

OM-1 - 120fps with AF locked. So for action shooters a couple of the frames may be in focus.

If I'm going to shoot 120FPS I'd certainly want active AF through the burst.

So what is the fastest FPS out there for RAW files and active AF? 60?

It depends on the subject, doesn't it? Something like a golf swing or baseball at-bat wouldn't matter if AF was active or not... and with the AF locked, at least it won't jump to the background like a Z9...

The OM-1 can do 50fps in RAW with AF active; the GH6 does 75fps RAW with AF active (but it's CDAF, unfortunately).

Let’s limit frames per second comparisons to full frame and 24 Mpixels or greater. My opinion of course. I bet 40 fps with lossless RAW is the best they can do. Really the same amount of data the A1 is processing if the A9 III stays at 24 Mpixels.

Edited: or maybe tha an get to 40fps with a 33 Mpixel sensor. Keep my fingers crossed.

Yes, undoubtedly any Sony claim of being the "fastest" will be followed by at least half-a-dozen asterisks...

Maybe none in RAW with AF.

I think OM-1 at 50FPS may be the fastest in RAW with AF.
Pushing 20MPs.

I think A9III will beat that but it will surely be in Compressed RAW (Lossy) just like the 20FPS on A9(II) and 30FPS on A1.
Maybe A9III will get 30FPS in Lossless Compressed??

Not sure if I'd purchase it at 24MPs. Would have to really have some interesting features. Pre-capture for sure. Maybe something like the Z9 just got (trap focus mode). Still 24MP basically means most stuff I shoot now will need an extra TC thrown on the given lens as I do a lot of cropping on the 50MP A1. When I had the R3 for a CPS test drive I always was reaching to put the 1.4TC on the RF600/4 where as I rarely use 1.4TC on Sony 600GM on A1.

Don't want to derail, but do you end up having to crop a lot for the swallow shots you get with the A1?

Yes, most of the time I do. Often a lot. I sometimes get them to come right at me and get a fairly large swallow in the frame but even the dual linear motors in the 400 and 600GM start to struggle with something approaching that fast at such close range. It is the only time I ever hear noise from the motors. So often it is tough to have enough DOF and perfect AF on the head when they get that close. I prefer to use the 50MPs and accept cropping as a tool as then the swallows aren't moving as fast through the FOV, I can keep up, the algorithms can keep up and the motors can keep up.

The GH-6 does 75 frames per second in RAW with AF, and the files are 25.5MP. Their next m4/3 camera will probably have PDAF (with all cross-type AF points) like the OM-1, and if they can maintain the same throughput, it will be hard for Sony to top it in terms of speed.

Who really needs more than 60 fps?

Who really wants micro 4/3 instead of FF?

It's just pre-cropping instead of post-cropping... and faster AF acquisition than any FF camera... but I suppose not everybody wants that.

Probably no one... but this whole discussion is more about providing context around the crazy hype posted by Sony Rumors.
