Yep, my battery was fully dead as well but had extras (not the c version) that powered up the Z8 just fine while the other charges. First impression of the Z8 - I really like the feel, reminds me of the D850 in some ways but not too chunky and not too light, well built and balanced with 24-120, had my Z6 out today with Z 70-200 S and TC and hoping for better balance with that setup, really happy my pinky has somewhere to go.
Don’t see a plate from Kirk or RRS and smallrig only has a cage which I don’t want, will have to use a generic plate until someone comes out with something slim and form fitting.

Wait! Lance, didn't you start a thread explaining that you're going to wait on a Z8 until prices come down?
No, I started a thread that I had changed my mind and I am now going to get a Z8. Previous to that I had said I would pass on the Z8 until prices had come down, but I don't remember starting a thread on that subject.

But still trying to convince my friend to choose the Z8/400/4.5 over the R5/100-500 and now should be able to get her the Z8 without too much delay if she decides to go the Nikon route.
That's the "best" way to try gear - borrow your friend's setup! :-) I don't know how to pick between 100-400 and the 400/4.5 though

I will get my z8 tomorrow, and will be able to give feedback on its performance relative to my r5 pretty quickly. But comparing the 100-500 to the z400 is a bit tough, the nikon lens should have a small edge in iq but the canon lens is a pretty darn good performer for the price...

I got my Z8 yesterday, pretty much what I was expecting (mini Z9) so I am all “moved in” and it is ready to go to work. One difference is how much louder the protective shutter curtain is on the Z8 when opening and closing.
Because of that I re-did the My Menu items on both the Z8 and Z9 to have quick access to that curtain setting so when I need to be super quiet and know I am not going to change lenses for a bit, I can switch it off so when the camera is woken from sleep it does not make the noise.

It is, but: a) I dislike buying Chinese brands b) the Z9 version was, by all accounts, too flexible on the L and c) have a look at the bizarre gate that needs to be moved to access the battery compartment.
Also Smallrig appears to be violating the Arca-Swiss trademark, unless of course they have a licensing agreement in place, which I've asked about.
If I get a Z8 before Kirk / RRS have their L-plates out, I'll use a universal as a stopgap.

The sensor shield only moves when powering the camera on and off, not when it sleeps and wakes, right?

Can someone with a Z8 do me a big favor? I would like to analyze what Nikon is doing with their HLG tone mapping for raw files. Could someone please shoot a tripod-locked scene at ISO 400, one photo using a regular picture profile and a second, identical photo but using an HLG profile? In losslessly-compressed NEF. A scene with both deep shadows and highlights would be ideal. If you could PM a link to the NEFs or post a link there. Thanks!

Did it feel more plasticy than the z6 or d850? I was disappointed to here it was mostly carbon reinforced polymer with my experiences with a d750 vs a 850 or z6/7

I've got question about card door, for those who used to have any of z6, z6II, z7 or z7II.
How solid does it feel on z8 compared to those, which are kind squishy?
One of the things I didn't like on my z7II, the grip should be solid.

There is nothing plasticy about the Z8 compared to the Z7 or the Z9. It is a solid chunky boy. There is no way you can tell what the frame is made out and anything to reduce the weight is a good time. It's certainly much smaller and lighter than a Z9 but it is a hefty handful compared to a Z7 or Z6.

I agree with bcaslis above, nothing plasticky and you can't tell what it's made of just "feels" better than Z6, I realize this is highly subjective but it "feels" very solid without being overly large or overly heavy.

Based on a few videos I watched of Z8 I thought the card door would be super light and really easy to accidentally open, mine is not, I've intentionally tried to accidentally open with various thumb swipes and I cannot get it to do so, I have to be pretty intentional to get it to open, maybe it will loosen over time or maybe my right thumb isn't as grippy as some but I don't think I'll have any issues with the card door. Z6 has slightly more flare out for thumb than Z8 which appears more subtle.

Thanks for that, but for the Z8 I'd prefer a plate that was a bit more subtle, the Smallrig works best on the Z6 because the body is too small for my hand and I prefer somewhere for my pinky to help support, but on the Z8 it's already sized correctly so would want a reduced footprint for the arca plate and smallrig is anything but... small . Hopefully Kirk or RRS will come out with something innovative soon, I really like RRS D850 modular plate and hope they are designing similar for Z8.

A question for everyone, in setting up the "i" button menu, focus area is not a choice anymore. Focus mode is but not area. Does anyone see anything different? I'm confused why it's not there.
