Back in early March 2019 Juha posted a gallery of images he shot with the 75/1.5 at CP+. I just happened across the photos on my computer, having downloaded them back then. Anyway, I found his post and the link to his 75/1.5 photo gallery is still valid. There are some images in the collection that show focus transition and IMO it's better, calmer than the 75/1.9 with overall more neutral, less characterful rendering.

I would say "neutral, less characterful" only in the context of comparing it to the 75 1.9. Other comparisons show it's difficult to tell the difference between 75 1.5 shots and the 75 Lux, and I'd hardly call that lens "neutral".

I respectfully disagree on this. I did side to sides, and I can pick out which lens each time.

Can you link me to the comps you’re talking about? Would like to see.

Sure, the 75 Lux will be the one that's soft at the point of focus Aren't the optics similar with CV adding an ASPH element?

I could have sworn someone on here did a side-by-side, but I can't find it. Might have been thinking about this comparison at Leica Forum, but they've since made the album private even after logging in with my Adobe subscription:

Putting the 75 Lux comparison aside, here are some samples from the 75 1.5 that I definitely do not see as neutral:

Yes—if pushing it (too close, too stressful of a background bokeh wise, etc.), you can get some funkiness. Many modern lenses are like this unless they are uber corrected. I just disagree with the 75 Lux vs CV 75/1.5 as not distinguishable cause even in “normal” shooting conditions, the 75 Lux exhibits much more conspicuous character, while the CV 75/1.5’s imprint is much smoother, subtle and modern IMO. Also, this is probably what you were thinking of but couldn’t find (classic FM search issue!):

Ah, thanks for finding that! I thought I was loosing my mind (yet again).

If I look carefully, I can see differences of course, but you have to admit you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference if they weren't put side-by-side. I think at the time I remember thinking I preferred the Voigtlander because it was close enough to the 75 Lux for a sub-$1K lens. The 75 1.5 I think of more as dual-character since it can go either way sometimes.

I completely agree with the comment about the CV 75/1.5 Nokton's smooth rendering. In my opinion, it has a modern feel similar to the Leica 50/1.4 lux and 75/2 APO. However, I have noticed that the 75/1.4 Lux has a more vintage draw and shares similarities with the 50/1 Noct's.

I'm really curious about how the new CV 75/1.9 Ultron will compare to these lenses. At the moment, it's still a bit of a question mark for me. I'm thinking of doing some side by side comparisons with the CV 75/1.5 and Leica 75/1.4 Lux to get a better idea.

Don’t worry, I lose my mind several times weekly about such things. If people really contort/push the files processing, it’s hard to tell what’s going on they are so baked. But, I can see the difference of those two lenses generally quickly. I don’t think it’s super tricky—even aside from bokeh centric or in side/backlit scenes. The colors, contrast, difference in SA and subject separation really are different, esp WO.

If I thought they were pretty close, I would have purchased the smaller, much cheaper 75/1.5 and not looked back I have moved on from both though, and favor the 50 Noct, 80 Summilux, 73 Sonnetar and hopefully this new 75/1.9

I've shot a bunch more this week with the 75/1.9 MC on my Sony A7C. More samples can be found here:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/ydhDFzb5oKMhV3q8A
https://photos.app.goo.gl/sqDbmff7dmfJW8pF8

All shots were taken with my Rayqual adapter so there was no helicoid adapter used to get closer.

I processed them by applying my favorite preset in C1 Pro 23. Otherwise no tweaking.
More or less everything was again at f5.6 or f1.9.

I'm really liking this lens, more than I like my 75/1.5 especially from size and handling perspective and the 0.5m close focusing is a big bonus.

The background OOF rendering- especially outside MFD- looks exceptional IMO. Def. plan on picking this up.

You mean a 3 way side-by-side (by side lol)? I’d love to see it. I’ll be doing a Sonnetar vs CV 75/1.9 for myself, but that won’t have much appeal to many.

It'll appeal to me! :-) And probably to Juha even though he already owns both lenses.

Accurate, but I was trying not to eliminate all hope.

I was shooting with a buddy this weekend, taking a photo of him with my AF 85/1.8D and telling him I was looking forward to a size and weight reduction with this lens. I hit the shutter release and I hear a little "drrnng" noise come from the lens, and that's when I lost aperture control. I'm guessing I lost a spring in the control assembly given the noise, but it felt very much like the lens was making a last ditch effort to avoid replacement. "You can't get rid of me. I need your attention. You wouldn't just abandon me in this state, would you?!"

Even in Tokyo the supplies of this lens seem to have been quite limited at launch timing and both versions are practically out of stock everywhere now, probably waiting for new supplies from the next production run. SC version was on very short supply even at launch timing whereas MC version had a bit better availability but that too ran out pretty quickly.

I really like your samples so far. I think this is a lens I could consider even without native mount version available. Love look of it's size and controls. As I happen to have a Voigtländer VM-E Close Focus adapter still in my drawer, this would be a fun lens to use with it as it already focuses so close. Would love to see samples how close you can get with it, using a similar adapter if you have one?

Thanks! I have VM-E Close Focus adapter v1 (4mm helicoid) and also v2 (4.3mm helicoid). Is yours v1? I will try to take some samples of how close you can get with these adapters soon (probably during weekend).

So far I've been enjoying this lens with my Rayqual adapter (no helicoid) because Rayqual is my favorite and most accurate adapter in terms of thickness (they strive to make their adapters exactly correct thickness), and on my A7C this lens can be used at hard infinity with the Rayqual adapter for best infinity results. I'm also feeling that 0.5m is close enough even without a helicoid adapter. With my slightly thinner-than-spec CV adapters hard infinity goes too far and can't be used for good results with this lens. (One could always adjust for perfect infinity alignment by moving the adapter's helicoid just a bit but I don't feel like it will stay put at exactly right place for very long when you can't lock it there.)

I'm feeling that this lens works so nicely on my A7C that there is no particular need for a native E-mount version but if Cosina released one I'd still be tempted for the EXIF etc.

Sounds really good. I've only used 75mm Color-Heliar in past and I miss that lens (regret selling it a bit). Although it was only f/2.5 and had one more adapter in between (L39-LM). I think this new Ultron could be the perfect replacement. I love this FL and close-focusing is really nice addition. Have you used the 28mm Ultron with your A9 or A7C by any chance? In Fred's tests it seemed to suffer on Sony in corners, but he used the high megapixel A7IV body. I was wondering if that one was okay too with 24Mp bodies... Not looking it to be pixel-perfect.

This Ultron really looks impressive in that regard. So no worries there. And rendering looks great. Not too modern and clinical, but not too retro either.
