p.9 #1 · Voigtländer Nokton Vintage Line 35/1.5 VM I & II and Nikon Z Apo-Lanthar 65/2

I received an email from Payee this morning stating my CV 35/1.5 had been cancelled. The order was put in last week.

Anyone else having cancelled Payee orders?

So maybe it will not be different with the new Nokton.

The older CV 28/2 Ultron had a plastic tab. All newer versions have metal tabs but at least in the case of the CV 28/2 II Ultron, it's not brass and if only painted black, it will likely peel overtime.

I got the same email. I messaged their customer service to ask why.

What's the scoop? And anyone else have their order cancelled?

@krysdafur I payed with a Wells Fargo Credit card. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. What medium of payment did you use?

My direct (local) pre-order from Map Camera hasn't been affected, it's still valid. Also Map Camera's site is accepting new pre-orders as before, so I guess the problem must be specific to Buyee / international orders. Hopefully Buyee's customer service can provide insight into the problem...

Reply from Buyee about the cancelled preorder…

“Thank you for using our service.
Regarding the order [xxxx], the store declined the transaction between the foreign proxy purchase services such as Buyee for this item.”

So looks like Map Camera canceled the order.

I'd wait until Map have stock and try again. It's possible they don't want to mix Buyee pre-orders with regular customer pre-orders. It's interesting though because it appears that Buyee is somehow affiliated with the company that owns Map Camera (according to the link from Juha some posts back), so you'd think there might be tighter integration, or preferential treatment.

Odd it’s coming so shortly, it can be pre-ordered, and we have so few samples.

My experience is that the Cosina sample images are very thin on the ground for new lens releases. The ones provided by Cosina are usually not good for assessing the quality of the lens.
Voigtlander have a great German instagram presence, they should really seed new lenses to reviewers before launch to build hype.

Given the nine-page thread here on this forum already for a lens that hasn't yet been released, maybe the hype has built itself.

Sorry, 9 pages long... has the 39mm front filter size already been discussed?

39mm seems awfully small for a 1.5 lens. Leica's FLE uses a 46mm filter. The CV 35 1.4 v2 is 43mm.

Is this new 35 1.5 going to be the vignette king?

I think Map Camera should not have motivation to cancel Buyee pre-orders unless there is some restriction on their sales contract with Cosina that disallows them from shipping the lens(es) outside of Japan or to specific countries since Cosina has official distributors in various other countries...

I've read that they are also apparently selling quite a bit to foreign tourists visiting Japan now on the strength of weak yen (especially Canon cameras that have no user interface language restrictions on Japanese models).

It would be good to find out if other CV lenses that are in stock can be ordered successfully through Buyee.

Not unlikely. But there are other modern lenses with tiny front elements, e.g the Nikon 40mm f2 could probably have had something like a 26mm filter. Cosina is willing to accept (optical) vignetting as a compromise though, as the 28mm Ultron has shown, so we‘ll probably get lots of it.

They now make 21, 28, 35 and 90mm M mount lenses with a 39mm thread. Clearly missing 50mm and 75mm options

The problem with a lot of anticipation without something to manage expectations is that it will inevitably lead to disappointment.

I'm ok with gradual vignette. If it's extreme though I might have to pass on it. If Cosina believe it is going to be the new standard in fast 35's that's quite a statement.
Comparing the lens design to the ZM Distagon

Nokton 35/1.5
9 elements 6 groups
No glass of anomalous partial dispersion
2 elements with aspherical surfaces
No floating group
36mm long

Zeiss 35/1.4 ZM
10 elements 7 groups
3 elements with anomalous partial dispersion
2 elements with aspherical surfaces
floating group
65mm long

Yes the advancement of optical design marches on but the Distagon is pretty new in the world of manual focus optics. As Fred said, there is no free lunch. That 29mm (1 1/8" in freedom units) saving in length is enough to make me buy it if there are no severe issues though.

Those are all slow lenses. All those in 1.4 have much bigger filter sizes.

The Voigtlander 35/1.5 has 4 aspherical surfaces though. The 35/1.4 ZM is really amazing from wide open across the image field (on a M body), but it's a big 35mm lens. I'm not expecting the new Voigt to perform as well as the Zeiss.

Yes, it's a concern but there is more to vignetting than just the filter thread size. The optical design plays a role as well but we should expect noticeable optical vignetting with cats-eye highlights towards the edge. If it's the same level as the CV 28/2 II Ultron, it would be a great achievement imo.
