If someone orders either of the black versions and happens to own a black version of the 21mm type II, 28mm type II or 90mm APO, I‘d be really interested in how the finish compares. As usual with Cosina they seem to be a bit inconsistent with the „matte black“ finish

It’s likely that the matte black finish will be different because it’s black paint rather than anodized. In case you missed it, Cosina announced the change from anodization to paint after their initial announcement. It sounds like Fred will get the matte black option so we should get a good evaluation about it from him.

BTW, I now get a pop-up on the Map Camera site for Buyee - a purchasing and forwarding service. The downside is you will have to pay the 10% consumption tax (included in the list price), plus modest handling and shipping fees. I think I’ll give that $660 Aluminum a whirl. Woot woot!

I have the 28/2 II black paint (brass) version and the black 90/2.8 VM. I think the black paint on 28/2 II is shiny and looks similar to the 35/1.5 II black (brass) version based on product pictures at least. I've pre-ordered the Type I matte black of 35/1.5 this time so I can compare to my 28/2 II and 90/2.8 when I receive the new lens. I should get it on 24th.

Anybody getting the black painted 'tab' starting to peel? The tab is not brass.

Thanks for the tip. I just ordered the matte black type I, $689 after fees.

LMK how it goes. Any word on how they (both Map and Buyee) handle pre-order items, or out of stock items, such as in this case? Feel free to PM me.

No idea. I’ll be the guinea pig. Payment was handled through Paypal so if anything goes wrong I’m sure Paypal will handle it. From what I gather, Buyee will ship it after they receive your order. It does sound like there will be an additional shipping charge from Japan to the US.

I made another small order of in stock items, that one should process soon. I’ll let you all know how that one goes.

I’ve bought from Map before through their eBay store. Didn’t incur any duties.

They ship via various services, such as EMS or they have "Buyee Air" which for the US will be their choice of FedEx, DHL or UPS. I believe you have to tell them what the purchased item is, and they will put this on the waybill, so it should be the same customs procedure as anything else coming from Japan or overseas via one of those shipping services. They don't pay the customs clearance for you ahead of time.

Yes, there will be a shipping fee, but from what I saw in their FAQs, it should be pretty reasonable. Maybe $30ish for something small like an M lens.

Through their eBay store, it's free shipping.

On my 28/2 II the focus tab looks still fine without any signs of peeling or such, but I haven't used the lens that often after the 1st few weeks (I have too many lenses) so it wouldn't have had a lot of wear in any case.

I don't know how Buyee impacts the process but when ordering directly from Map in Japan, they charge for the pre-order item only when they ship, and they always ship on the day before launch date so that the item will be delivered on the release day (when it's a local delivery). I always specify the desired delivery time (e.g. morning 8-12) in a freeform comment when I pre-order as there are no dedicated fields for that on their order page when release date is still undecided. They always follow that request properly.

There's always the possibility that they have more pre-orders than initial stock though in which case they wouldn't be able to ship from initial lot. I think in that case they would inform by e-mail that delivery will be later because of limited stock. I always pre-order early so this hasn't happened to me so far. They do pay attention to the timing of pre-orders and pre-orders are allocated based on order timing.

Mine is also fine so far but I'm seen some image showing nasty peeling for the tab only. Underneath is aluminum and not brass like the lens itself.

An update on the Buyee experience.

On Nov 8, I order 2 filters from Map Camera through Buyee. The next day Buyee confirmed they received and processed the order. On Nov 10, Buyee confirmed they have received the order from Map. Today, Nov 11, I was able to select a shipping method from Japan to the US. They have a few different options for you to choose from. I choose to use their own air delivery service (Buyee Air) which was $20. EMS was also available for about $30.

I also preorder the VM 35mm 1.5, and they have confirmed the order for that is processed.

It might be the reason why plastics are a good choice of material for these tabs though less glamourous.

Well, this is a disappointment, but I am thankful for the information. The feel of painted brass is a large part of why I would buy that version, yet one of the most-touched parts of the lens is not brass. My attention now shifts to the silver-finished version, assuming its focusing tab is anodized.

I found this (Japanese) article that talks about the recently introduced Buyee option available on Map Camera's shop.

I'm not 100% sure, but if I remember right my silver Ultron 2/28 VM, I think the focussing tab was plastic too!
So maybe it will not be different with the new Nokton.
