Is your EA9 firmware version 1.6, David? It's great to hear that it functions well on the A7RV. Your assumption that it will also perform well on the new A7C cameras seems logical.

I think it’s 1.5…

Still on FW 1.4 (to be able to fix the adapters position by using AF/MF Ctrl Toggle on the camera) still working well.
Just tried it with the VM 75mm 1.9 which seems to work pretty good.

To those that have adapters with the issues, have any of them being sold through Techart/B&H directly?

Yes. I purchased my adapter new from B&H. Finally got he updater working and tried all of the suggestions (eg f/90, revert to 1.5 and 1.4) but nothing works for AF. MF OK, but I can do that with a dumb adapter. Got an RMA from B&H and will return to them for refund.

Did the adapter's autofocus function operate initially for a period and then stop working?

Yes it worked for a few frames and thereafter just not able to AF. I should have noted that all of this initial testing has been with an A6000 (monochrome converted). I do have a Sony a7cR on order and thinking that perhaps I should wait until that comes in and see if it works on the new camera., The A6000M does work with an old TA-GA3 and Contax G lenses and also with a Fringer CN-SE and Contax N lenses.

Mine had AF issues but the reset on an earlier firmware fixed it. It was great on the A6100, 6600, A7C, A7 IV and especially the A9.
Another option is to try opening the adapter and checking if the screws holding the 4 motors are tight. Some people on this forum mentioned that if these screws are loose, autofocus might not function correctly.

Thanks Fred. How far back did you have to go for stable AF? I tried v1.4 and 1.5 (with the F/90 reset procedure) and had no effect on AF.

I downgraded to version 1.5. First, I took a picture at f/90, then turned off the camera. When I turned it back on, I switched to f/2 and tried AF. The first two attempts didn't work, but after repeating the process three times, the AF started working normally.

Later on, I downgraded to version 1.4, and it has been working well for a while, even during extensive testing. I prefer version 1.4 because it allows the lens carrier to stay in position when I activate manual focus.

Thanks again Fred, but I have been unable to reproduce your success with this adapter. I will not fool around with hardware disassembly. I expect TechArt to provide me with fully functional hardware and I am sure that B&H would not consider refunding after that kind of procedure. It is going back to B&H tomorrow. If I see that people are having success with the new a7cR and TAP II I will reconsider.

Perhaps your copy was truly defective because it does not seem to be a software issue.

I finally have the LM-EA9 working! There was nothing wrong with the adapter. It was the Sony A6000M that I was using for testing. I switched to a Sony A6400 and it works well with the adapter using v 1.6. The older A6000 only has contrast based AF (no PD) which is not (or barely) usable with the EA9 in AF mode.

Thanks for letting me know. It turns out there was a misunderstanding because it only works with PDAF, but the good news is that the adapter wasn't defective.

I think that I was dimly (at 86 my memory is fading a little) aware of that limitation but what kept me trying was the fact that the A6000 did work fine with the old Techart adapter for Contax G lenses and B&H listed the A6000 as compatible with TAP II.

I have a A7C and the EA9 adapter. Sitting down with my small assortment of lenses I can report the Canon LTM 50mm f/1.2 won’t mount. It hits the locking button. My Contax G45 m mount works well and is probably my favorite lens to use these days. I also have a s mount Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens with an Amedeo adapter. I was happy to see this lens does well on the Sony and is, to my delight, sharper than I recall it was on a m240 at f/2.

Update: after more than six months using my new LM-EA9 adapter: it’s been working flawlessly, especially with the latest 1.8 firmware. My first unit died, but I believe it was just a lemon.

Hi Fred, I'm reading your other thread on Best Voigtlander M-mount lenses. In your view, are there any lenses meeting the following criteria?

- 28/35 f1.4ish m-mount
- perform reasonably well on Sony wide open for off-center portraits
- without sensor mod
- from any brand

The E-mount Voigtlander 35/40 f1.2 are very good but cannot be used with the AF adaptor, and they are a tad heavy to me. Thanks.

My LM-EA-9 arrived yesterday. On my A7III, it only allowed exactly four shots, then stopped working. Turning the camera off and on again helped for the next four shots. This was absolutely reproducible.
A firmware update from version 1.7 to 1.8 helped. Now it seems to be working very well. I hope it stays that way.
The adapter was shipped with version 1.7.

If updating the firmware solved the problem, then it's possible your unit had a glitch or bug in the earlier version. If you prefer version 1.7, you should be able to downgrade without causing any issues.

One thing that was not covered is the compatibility of Leica M lenses with the Sony sensor. As you know, the Leica sensor has sensor elements ( "pixels"?) angled inward at the extremities in order the keep the entire image in focus corner to corner. I don't believe the Sony sensor, while excellent, has this feature. So how good is the image sharpness corner to corner with the Sony mated to M mount lenses?

Leica tries to optimize their digital M sensor stack so that it would work reasonably well with their film-era lenses that have been designed for film cameras so they go for thin sensor stacks and angled microlenses (in some of their digital M cameras but perhaps not all). And modern M-mount lenses are typically optimized for these digital M sensor stacks. Sony and most other mirrorless cameras don't have similar legacy support demands so they can use thicker sensor stack as they like and their native lenses are designed / optimized accordingly.

I think that is a more generic topic with regards to adapting M-mount lenses to Sony and not specifically about this adapter. There have been a lot of discussions about adaptability of various rangefinder lenses in many different threads, in specific lens reviews etc.

Some M-lenses adapt poorly and some adapt really well and some in-between, usually the wider angle lenses are more challenging and >= 50mm lenses have less problems but there are some exceptions.

See for example this thread:
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1647789/0

I think from AF usability perspective LM-EA9 usually works better with longer lenses too (e.g. it can often focus on wider area with 50mm and longer lenses in my experience) and I find wider angle lenses to be more restricted to central area focusing. Also, if the lens has plenty of field curvature (sensor stack induced or otherwise), it's not so easy to balance it out by focusing on midframe with this adapter when it comes to many WA lenses (e.g. it's easier to do it by manual focus). I generally don't like to use LM-EA9 with my wider angle rangefinder lenses for these reasons, and I usually use it more with 50mm and longer lenses.
