I was excited to try what Fred said--going back to v1.5 to fix my adapter which started hunting incessantly shortly after I purchased.

However, when I try to install the desktop Techart app from the website, my Mac tells me this:

Running Mac OS X 13.0.1 (ventura).

Anyone else having this issue/can offer help?

Nehamiah,

Yes, that completely resolved the issue for me.

You can click on "OK," then navigate to your Mac's "Privacy & Security" settings. Ensure that the option "Allow apps downloaded from" is selected as "App Store and identified developers." You might also receive a prompt asking if you want to open the Techart app. In that case, just go ahead and click "OK" to open it.

I just found this and did this in my Security settings after asking, but thanks much Fred for answering quickly.

But my adapter does not work still. It kind of works with v1.5 if I preset the distance and will lock slowly after some fluttering. When shooting something near (within 5 feet), if I put it at MFD, it will lock on with AF. But then if I shooting something more than 5 feet away, say my kitchen chair in broad daylight (tons of contrasts and easy to find), it won't lock on unless I switch the distance on the lens to 3 meters. When at 3 meters, it won't lock on anything near or further away and it's slow. I also reset with f90 with v1.4 and v1.5 with no more success.

So, essentially still useless. Bummer. I would really like this to work.

Go back to 1.5 and do the f/90 reset a few more times. It’s worth a try.

Well, I did 3 in a row. On the 3rd try, the adapter went very quickly and made an odd sound, and now it won't focus at all. If I put my ear up the adapter and hold down the shutter, I can hear it clicking very quietly and steadily. Seems that the motor(s) died, which I think was probably the problem from the start with my unit. Some issues with the servo-motors. It also won't AF on my a7r2 at f2 or f90. I re-installed v1.4 and v1.5, but no go. Interestingly, same as before, if I preset the lens, it will still confirm focus with the little green squares and fire if directly on the object. But the actual motor doesn't move the lens anymore, just that clicking sound.

A reader sent me a short repair guide.
He told me that the screws holding the motors in place come loose and then it won't work anymore.
Didn't have a chance/reason to try this myself, but if you want to give it a shot:

Thanks for the suggestion Bastian. I gave it a whirl--I got through all the steps, but none of my screws were loose. When I re-assembled, it does the same thing. Just ticks, the motors are trying to engage without success. I really wish I could just send this thing off to TechArt to be repaired.

Two days ago, my device had a problem. It was behaving just like you explained. It wasn't moving and was making a soft and steady sound when I brought it close to my ear. But, after I went back to version 1.5 and did the F90 reset a few times, it started working again and is fully functional now. I've stuck with version 1.5 because I'm not sure what's different in version 1.6.
If you don't succeed, give the method that Bastian shared a try, tightening the motor screws.

I noted above that I did try Bastian's way, but not successful. I did give it some more F90's with v1.5, and it kind of helped. Now it is moving again, but also has stopped again several times entirely. Then I reset the f90 more, and it started moving again.

I then resorted to trying f90 at infinity with my thinking being perhaps that's the distance the adapter needs to calibrate or reset to as we are supposed to leave the lens at infinite for general shooting.

Oddly, this didn't work like I thought it might. But, with my CV 35/2 Ultron, the adapter now works pretty well. However, with my Syoptic 50/1.1, it only works if I MF it on the item, then the green boxes will appear. It actually is giving me purple boxes now, and won't focus lock with the Syoptic. The CV 35/1.2iii also hunts endlessly, but does not give a purple box but it doesn't freeze. When I pop the CV 35/2 Ultron back on, it works. I tried distance and lens specific f90's to no avail.

When I first got the adapter, the Syoptic worked pretty well.

Update: When I try my 35 Lux Pre-ASPH, it kind of works. Slow and very hunty, and needs to be prefocused like a tele, but will lock. It used to work decently as well.

I'm curious if they're aware that FW 1.6 actually worsened stability. My understanding is that devices with 1.6 generate problems sooner or later. Mine did and after F90 reset and returning to 1.5 so far so good.

I’m still enjoying my LM-EA9 on FW 1.6 since last fall. Sorry to hear of these mysterious issues. Camera model could be a factor. I’m just using it on my A7IV.

Also, just curious does switching to MF return the lens to infinity focus on 1.5? I had the recollection that was changed after 1.4 where MF just freezes the adapter where it is, making it possible to function as an extension ring of sorts. That was the one reason (feature) I considered downgrading FW.

Still on FW 1.4 (to be able to fix the adapters position by using AF/MF Ctrl Toggle on the camera) still working well.
Just tried it with the VM 75mm 1.9 which seems to work pretty good.

To those that have adapters with the issues, have any of them being sold through Techart/B&H directly?

It seems that version 1.4 brought in some choices for the autofocus method when using very fast lenses. These could likely be the f/51 and f/57 choices.
"Improve autofocus response, add shutdown docking position options, increase focus speed choices to adapt to super-wide aperture lenses."

In essence, Version 1.5 took away the capability of the adapter to stay in its current position when switching between autofocus and manual focus using the AF/MF toggle.
"Add a feature that automatically switches back to the infinity focus position when switching to manual focus."

In the most recent v1.6 update, it states:
"The optimization algorithm has been updated."

I've tried this adapter since v1.0 and that was the only firmware causing freezes. After v1.2 it was already pretty stable.

Thanks for letting me know. I just tried setting a custom button again and this time it worked. Not sure why it was not working before.

I also tried on my FW2.00 A7C and the LM-EA9 FW1.6 and it works fine setting a custom button (same I use on my A9) for AF/MF toggling.

The A9 has a dedicated MF switch so it's much easier.

Yes the MF-switch on the A9 works fine with the Techart, which the normal Focus mode settings with AF-S, AF-C, MF etc on other bodys doesn't since MF is greyed out on those.

I use the AF/MF Ctrl Toggle custom button method therefor also on the A9, and get the same function and muscle memory on all my bodys.

Today, I tried out several of my lenses and noticed that they had trouble focusing away from the center area when used with my A6600, A7C bodies. Interestingly, the A9 camera made the lenses focus much better, even towards the corners of the frame. This suggests that there's something about the A9's focusing system or hardware that improves the performance of the Techart EA9 AF adapter. The lenses that had the most trouble were the CV 28/2 Ultron, Leica 28/1.4 Lux, and 35/1.4 Lux, so all wide angle. Most telephoto lenses perform much better in this regard.

I suggest considering a used A9 if you want improved autofocus performance with the EA9 adapter. I used this camera for the adapter review and realized why I was so pleased with it. I'm unsure if newer Sony cameras have similar performance to the A9 + TAP, but the A7R V and newer A7C models might also as effectively. It's uncertain.

I’ve had surprisingly good results on many lenses with A7r5, which suggests but does not guarantee thatA7c2 and A7cR would do okay, since the share the “AI” processor…
