Snowy with Z9 with 500PF+1.4TCiii, 700f8 looks great in good light. The snowy's foot appears injured, hopefully will heal soon!

Stupppppid Question of the day:

If the Nikon Z9 will be updated shortly to allow 8K 60FPS raw..... why can't the camera support raw in stills at 60 FPS?

Hear me out and then explain... why can't the camera support "small" 33 megapixel RAW? Thinking out loud but curious.

Finally got my Z9 tonight! A few observations….

1. Nikon, PLEASE fire whoever set the default settings. JPEG is the default at ISO 100…. Why not JPG+RAW and ISO 64 as the base?! So strange.
2. The AF is FAST on my adapted Nikon 300mm 2.8VRII. Like crazy fast and accurate. This is shocking and so happy adapted glass is behaving so well.
3. That’s all for now, just got the camera and too dark to really test it out.

One thing that should be a default setting is the sensor shield.

I would suggest you activate that if you haven't...... just in case.

Yes it is so sweet to have the F mount adapt well. Also the 1.7 and 2.0 TC's have new life. The 2.0 works well on my 400E and will probably work well on your 300.

I left the sensor shield out of my list because I’m tired… thought that was odd as well. Thought it’d drop down during lens change as well as when powering off but don’t see that setting… I assume others meant they turn off the camera between lens changes - which in effect initiates the shield if turned on?…

As best I remember I had to choose for the shield to close. That was in the setup menu ..... "the wrench"

I always turn my camera off when I change lenses so I dont know how that effects this setting. I was surprised that it didnt default to closing as best I remember.

Have fun! It is a cool camera!

Someone suggested that the sensor shield should be able to be set so as it only comes down when you press the lens release button and release the lens. I think this would have been a better solution if it could have been done. I guess the only issue with this is that the camera needs to detect whether the lens is actually being removed or not. If you press the lens release button and then you decide not to remove the lens, the shield may stay down!

There are contacts on the lens to the camera body. Can use this as detection.

Yes, these contacts could hopefully be used so as to detect when the lens is removed and thus shut the sensor shield. Maybe the very fact that the lens is being removed could be used to shut the sensor shield rather then even needing to press the lens release button. The release button may not even have a switch on it.

Phil,
I noticed that you were using the 70-200 f2.8 S on this series of photos you took. Did you have a the 70-200 F mount prior to this one and if so, how would you compare the 2. I currently have the F myself and it is one of my most used lenses and have always loved it. Just trying trying to determine just which Z lenses to get and this is one I am seriously considering.

BTW, great set and looks like it would be a load of fun to be at.

Thanks,
Gary

Hey Gary,

Thanks, and yes that was really a fun opportunity.

Yes, I did have the 70-200 2.8 FL ED and it was fantastic but I really didn't use it very often and ended up selling it. In our area, what I shoot needs at least 50mm, if not more (much more). Later, I had a shoot op at work that really needed a 70-200, so the boss said "get it & expense it". Needless to say, I did not hesitate.

Because I didn't have both to compare on a Z body, I'm not sure I can offer a qualified comparison. I will say that the Z version is lightning fast and uber sharp and has an excellent "feel" in then hand. It also take both the 1.4x & 2x Z-Mount TC's quite well.

Sorry, I know that really doesn't address your question but I wanted to clear about my personal experience.

Regards,

Phil

Not having a shutter sound is extremely disorienting… I burned through a few hundred unwanted frames yesterday not realizing I was taking photos.

The camera locked up on me once - no back buttons responded to me - reboot fixed the issue.
