There are contacts on the lens to the camera body. Can use this as detection.
Yes, these contacts could hopefully be used so as to detect when the lens is removed and thus shut the sensor shield. Maybe the very fact that the lens is being removed could be used to shut the sensor shield rather then even needing to press the lens release button.
