I have been shooting back to back with my Z9 and Z6II for work for this week and there is such a in hand feel discrepancy between the Z9 and Z6II that I barely want to use my Z6II. The button placement is weird, the camera feels all fiddly, the mech shutter is so effing loud it's like some sort of ergonomics shock. I still use it to get the job done, but man the Z6II is like a toy by comparison...good side body but Jeez.

Sure.
All i am saying is starting off with a longer focal length combined with newer optics and coatings will only do better.
We were talking about heat haze. Improving the IQ of your optics has no meaningful effect on heat haze. Using a longer FL will enlarge the effect. If you can't avoid shooting through the haze, you'll need to get closer to reduce the effect. Meaning you'll want a shorter FL.

I noticed that you were using the 70-200 f2.8 S on this series of photos you took. Did you have a the 70-200 F mount prior to this one and if so, how would you compare the 2. I currently have the F myself and it is one of my most used lenses and have always loved it. Just trying trying to determine just which Z lenses to get and this is one I am seriously considering.
BTW, great set and looks like it would be a load of fun to be at.

I am confident these images can be better. I am still refining the process. This is an example of how different subjects require different ISO ceilings. Poor light and dark subjects are a challenge to expose correctly to get nice feather detail for me. Generally 3200 ISO will be fine for me except for this scenario on the Z9.

I've been fly fishing in Arkansas and when the snow storm blew in it got a little tricky for fishing although the first day we fished in rain, sleet and snow but when you're catching fish you can't just stop. Snowed all night and was really coming down so we took a pass on the river and went for a hike. A mile or so up the trail along the White River and we make a bend and what is sitting in the trail - a fox. I'm only carrying a 100-400 with my Z9 but I give it a go. I'd been shooting landscape images and in my rush to try to capture this critter I failed to change my aperture to a more pleasing one for critters so I got a few too many snowflakes in the depth of field. Oh well. It stayed around for a few snaps and then turned and headed up the banks of the ridge along the trail not to be seen again. Made it worth hiking in the snow at about 17-18 degrees though!
tight crop on #1 - Z9 makes my 800E with 2xTC sing.
