Captured using the 2X TC on the last day of the year. Although I am impressed with the sharpness I could get out of this combo, the vignetting is definitely there. It was noticeable in the upper corners, obviously in the sky area. I cropped the image a little and used PP to reduce the vignetting. In terms of sharpness stopped down between 2- and 3-stops, it seems to be as sharp as the GM 100-400mm, set at 400mm at the corresponding FL. But it was not a direct comparison, and more based on previous images using the GM 100-400mm, of course and this is a real-life capture.
I deliberately came out here on the first clear day after a major storm, hence the snow capped mountains, but too bad it wasn’t quite clear…

Beautiful shot Joshua! I have yet to take any pictures outdoor with this lens, other than some testing shots vs the 100-400 GM.

Happy New Year!
Thank you very much, Douglas! Happy New Year to you, too! Next time you do so, please stop down both to about 2-stop, which we normally do, at least most of the time, for landscape/cityscape.

Thank you very much, Rich! My wife and non-photographers friends couldn’t understand why we keep on going back to the same spot. And to a certain degree, it was like comparing various lenses although the shooting circumstances are never the same.

Here are a few with the 70-200 2.8 GM II from my traditional last day of the year trip to the San Diego Zoo. The lens is sharp, light, and easy to shoot hand held. perfect for a Zoo outing. I had the 1.4 TC with me but felt no need to use it.

You are a master Joshua! Didn't I tell you that?
Thank you for your well-balanced,honest,real life feed-back.Now I know that I will take 100-400GM for the similar job.
What a shame my 70-200/2.8 MK 2 is still waiting on the shelf, while eventually-acquired-after-one- year-of-deliberation G 200-600 was at work already.
I hope that the decisive day for the GM 70-200Mk2 will come soon, though!.

I got my preorder of the 70-200mm II a couple days ago and finally got a break in the rain today and some downtime to try and compare it on a 2x TC with the 100-400mm. I used a tripod and tried to keep all settings consistent between the two lenses. I shot RAW, imported into Capture One Pro, and adjusted the white balance to match between the two photos. Focus point is just above the white dot near the center of the image. From the initial set of photos I took, cropping to 100% you can definitely tell that the 2x cuts into the sharpness as compared to the 100-400mm. If you're looking for sharpness/detail at 400mm, the 100-400 clearly wins here when you're pixel peeping. If you're not pixel peeping, it's difficult to tell which lens produced which image. The weight difference between the two setups is pretty hard to ignore though. The 70-200mm with 2x TC is noticeably lighter.
I'm waiting for the next version of 100-400. I'm sure it will be lighter like the 70-200 II. Historically 100-400 range and 70-200 are similar in size and weight. Since Sony made this light 70-200, I'm sure 100-400 to follow. It will be my every day wildlife lens replacing 70-350 DX.

Im in LA shooting my big gig this time of year. It is a Model and Talent convention my wife runs and im in charge of everything related to production . Including shooting it. My assistant and I put on about 15 to 20 thousand images on it. We rent the 70-200mm and this time I got the Version II. Out of the gate it smokes Version 1 by a truck load. Now this lens is on the Hot list. Remember im under very tough stage lighting with all LED lighting which cause a lot of banding. Reason I finally bought the A9II as I want to get away from putting this much use with a mechanical shutter. These are all shot with electronic shutter and using variable shutter activated to get any banding out of my images. LOVE IT let me repeat I LOVE IT. I have rented Version 1 lens in the past that was not this freaking good. Now these are the Talent folks giving a short acting dialogue. We start the Models today with a Jeans competition and one event I produced which is shooting LIVE models walking the runway tethered to my laptop in C1 than immediately pop up on the big screens. Cool stuff
Watch the Exif . Notice my shutter speed. I"ll post the Models later.

The only issue we have is actually seeing the clue we actually shot. Hard to see the little blink in the frame. OH I forgot these are in Crop mode aka 300mm

Little trick. I know we had a discussion on WB and I cheat a lot. So what I did here was WB off there badge than raised Klein a little to warm it up to taste. Looks nice
