I got my preorder of the 70-200mm II a couple days ago and finally got a break in the rain today and some downtime to try and compare it on a 2x TC with the 100-400mm. I used a tripod and tried to keep all settings consistent between the two lenses. I shot RAW, imported into Capture One Pro, and adjusted the white balance to match between the two photos. Focus point is just above the white dot near the center of the image. From the initial set of photos I took, cropping to 100% you can definitely tell that the 2x cuts into the sharpness as compared to the 100-400mm. If you're looking for sharpness/detail at 400mm, the 100-400 clearly wins here when you're pixel peeping. If you're not pixel peeping, it's difficult to tell which lens produced which image. The weight difference between the two setups is pretty hard to ignore though. The 70-200mm with 2x TC is noticeably lighter.

Thanks @hevaKmaI, the 70-200 + 2x and 100-400mm @400mm are really close in your example. The 100-400GM would allow a bit more cropping I suppose.
Have you seen any bokeh difference?

So far (and I haven't been targeting any bokeh so take this with a grain of salt), the bokeh has appeared about the same between the two setups.

Drove around Santee lakes today. It was cold, and blustery by San Diego standards. It was late morning so the birds were not flying, just hanging out at the shore line.
I decided to test the 70-200 f/2.8 GM II with the 1.4 TC. I shot these images from the SUV window staying warm and comfortable. This lens is so light and easy to shoot hand held like this. I think the IQ holds up very well with the TC. Sharp, and renders very nicely. Focusing is just amazingly fast and accurate.
Sometimes you find a lens you just click with. This is looking to be such a lens for me. I am looking forward to trying some portraits, and landscapes when the opportunities arise.

Damnit the GAS got me! After giving it some thought and realizing how rarely I used the 100-400 gm beyond 200mm i decided to pull trigger on the new 70-200 gm ii after selling the 100-400. And oh man i can't believe the weight of it in the hands and the image quality. Really happy with what I see initially. Can't wait to put it to use for landcapes and all sorts of things! 😀

So im in LA ready to do my big runway show and Lensrentals did ship me the Version II. So lets see how it will knock out about 12,000 next week. I will post some samples and give my impression but have to say its very nice looking and very light. I never bought the old one as the copy variation was bad . Hoping this is a lot better.
BTW the rental fee was 200 for 9 days total. So that maybe worth the rental fee if you want to try it first

I'm considering selling my Tamron 28-200, 200-600 to reduce weight, Sigma 85 which is rarely used and possibly the Sigma 105 macro since 0.3X should be enough for closeups of flowers.
New kit would be A7R IVA, 20 G, 35 GM and 70-200 GM II with 2X TC, which would significantly reduce the number of lenses and weight of my kit.

I justified it similarly - had 24/50/85 and found I was rarely using the 85. Generally opted for the 50 and felt the 85 was either tight or not long enough. Sold my 85 and another less used lens, now will be getting the 70-200 and may pick up a TC in the future. Had considered the 100-400 and 70-180 too, but think this will give me more flexibility with my fast moving son.

Exact 3 lens setup I have now along with the 2x and it works beautifully. You'll be happy with that setup.

That's a beautiful shot. What FL did you shoot that at? I think one aspect I really was surprised by is the MFC. You can really get some close up shots. I think the 2x or 1.4x teleconverter probably will be my next thing to get to make this lens be really versatile for landscapes with minimal sharpness loss

Could you tell me how you find AF speed compared to the best Sony lenses in that regard (e.g. 135GM, 100-400GM) ? Is there a visible difference or are they rather on the same level (the video reviews I've seen seem to suggest the former) ?
Thanks!

I find the new 70-200 f/2.8GM II to be snappier than the 100-400, and close to my best primes. In fact I think it is the fastest focusing zoom lens O have ever shot. I don't have the 135 GM to test against.
I will be using this lens plus 1.4 TC on our annual last day of the year Zoo walk tomorrow. The 100-400 has been my standard Zoo lens until now.

I would have to agree. I used to own the 100-400 gm as well and the new 70-200 def feels snappier to me. I have the 135 gm as wel that i totally adore and they are pretty much neck to neck in af speed if i just think about it on top of my head. I would have to test them side by side to get a better feel. Im curious about the difference in af speed and image quality loss between the 2x and 1.4x tc.

We went to visit my parents in PA the last couple days. Even talked them into running over to Conowingo Dam. Unfortunately we saw plenty of eagles but the weather was crap and very overcast. Nothing good came of that. Was hoping to test out the lens with the 2x converter. I was determined to use the new lens for something so we headed over to Longwood Gardens last night. Highly recommend it anytime of year if your in the area (west of Philly). Anyway the place was sold out as usual and packed. Luckily we had bought tickets ahead of time. I was the only idiot walking around indoors and outside in the dark with a telephoto lens. So take these images for what they are. Some real high ISO, some hand held, some small tripod, some long exposures, I also played around with Topaz to see which program worked best (sharpen or denoise). Anyway these are all the new 70-200 but take them for what they are. Nice memories no portfolio stuff.

My lens arrived this morning. First impressions are great- love the size/weight and how it balances on the camera (can carry camera/lens with one hand). It is very sharp wide open and focuses close. Here is one at 200mm at f/2.8 with a slight crop on my A7R IVA, processed with DXO PL5 (using the MK1 lens profile). Now, I just need to find a 2X TC as they are all on backorder.
