Thanks for the samples Juha! I like the way it draws with that SA glow at close distance and eccentric bokeh. It's everything I thought it would be.
I wonder if that field curvature is only exaggerated on the thicker stack body but it's also a characteristic of the lens.
Thanks Fred! Yes, it might be a characteristic of the lens as well. Will be interesting to find out when you test it on Leica as well as Sony I'll be shooting more with mine this weekend but weather forecast is looking pretty cloudy for tomorrow. At least it should not rain much...

I received my CV Heliar classic 50/1.5 this afternoon. I had hoped it would arrive in the morning but it took longer in the delivery truck (couldn't request specific delivery time when I pre-ordered so early). I didn't have a lot of time to shoot today but I did a little walk in the late afternoon with it and I shot various random stuff around Ebisu (in Tokyo) mostly wide open with my Sony A7C. A small number of longer distance shots were stopped down to anything between f4-f8. I used silent/electronic shutter all the time. I like it so far especially for the wide open / close distance shots. There seemed to be a bit more noticeable field curvature than e.g. with CV Nokton 50/1.5 VM II or CV Heliar classic 50/2 when shooting stopped down at "infinity" on my A7C. Need to spend more time to learn more how everything works. Handling felt excellent.

I don't know what's going on but you can't see the characteristic bubbles from official samples. Bokhe really looks like Heliar. Where did you get it ?

I bought it from Map Camera online store (in Tokyo).
I also have 3 other 50mm Heliar lenses, CV 50/2 Heliar classic VM, CV 50/3.5 Heliar VM and 1957 Topcor 5cm f2.8 LTM which is also a true Heliar optical design (just got that one last weekend from I.C.S. used camera fair). That Topcor was hard to find and didn't include the original hood or caps but at least it wasn't priced high.

Very interesting lens—I like a lot of what I see about it, although I’ll stick with my C-Sonnar. A big difference between the ZM and this CV appears to be the distortion—the C-Sonnar has basically none, and the Heliar is showing a lot in these photos. It’s very noticeable (and I’m not talking about curvature of field from the sensor), especially where there are lines (buildings, rooflines).

Just like with the 35/1.4 Classic, these characteristics vary depending on distance. The closer the funkier.

Zeiss is famous for its almost zero distortion. What can be seen up close when there are no exaggerated characters. I agree with the sharpness in the center, but CA is much more tragic. Additionally, C-Sonnar creates Go centrally. It won't give you a nice decentralized shot. Always everything except the central GO will be blurred with something like the curvature of the field. It looks like applying some filter when taking a picture. GO should be spread over the entire plane, not just in the center. Heliar is less sharp, but at least equal. 3D pop in C-Sonnar IMHO is no longer the same as in the original Sonnar. Tz. 3D POP is already hard to achieve. At Heliar This is still effectively achievable. The C-Sonnar is definitely sharper in the center, but only in center, rest it is a failure. Sonnar Bokeh is wonderful and Heliar has to work hard to get him.

Man, tempting, as this lens is available today....Those samples show a nice glow in certain situations, also nice that it's .5 meter Minimum focus on a mirrorless.
Anyone else get theirs yet?

Juha, excellent images, some quite beautiful for a casual walk around. Thanks for showing so quickly. Was getting a little
worried by some talk I've seen about it in comparison with older heliars, but ordered anyway and way glad I did. Due here sometime tomorrow.
Just what I hoped it would look like as revealed by your gorgeous photos.

Thanks very much Joe and everybody! Very happy to hear you liked the photos.
Since it's the weekend I had a lot more free time today to go out with my camera and I did a much longer walk. I added 92 more samples to the same album that also has the original ones from yesterday (they appear after the 70 original ones):
Really enjoying the lens and I think it works pretty well for both wide open and stopped down shooting. Today I mostly shot wide open again but also took a bit more "infinity" shots at f5.6. All the added samples are also SOOC JPEGs from my A7C.

Wow, there certainly is noticeable field curvature. It appears to bend towards the camera at the edges. In some situations you could use this to your benefit. But in other situations I find it very noticeable, in a negative way. But if the primary interest is using this as a character lens, it might not really matter much.
It will be interesting to see how much of this is the lens and how much is due to sensor stack thickness. Looking forward to seeing how this lens performs for Fred on the Leica.

Yes, for long distance shots hard infinity (with my accurate-thickness Rayqual adapter) seems to work best for mid-frame and for the edges even when center could sometimes benefit from focusing a little bit closer. On some street shots when focusing centrally at somewhat closer distances the curvature can become more noticeable towards the edges. I'm not sure how much the curvature will be related to sensor stack though. I will personally use this lens more as a character lens and when I want to shoot more flat-field infinity shots it's best to pick one of my other 50mm lenses.

Was supposed to get mine last Saturday. That's a week ago and counting.
It was received at local post office here in nyc form California as expected last Saturday in one day
from Camerquest. Since then, no show. Seems like the post office has messed up and I've got
them looking for it. Good luck!
