The 50mm Classic Heliar f / 2.0 has the most discreet flares and cannot be called cat eyes. You have to work hard to make them visible. From a different perspective or from a different distance, they are practically imperceptible. In any case, most of the users didn't even know about it. The new Heliar easily draws bubbles that are either round or blend together to form a white foam. They create a distinctive bokeh, as can be seen in the first examples from the site. As Fred Miranda rightly pointed out, this feature is more like a classic other lens. This is close to the Nokton Classic and not the Heliar Classic. However, I showed the king of kings which is Sonnar, and here you can see the most beautiful bokeh from the play of lights in the background. It all depends on who likes what, but for purists, the differences are obvious.

For cat eye, this image was shot at f2 on a cropped APS-C camera?
I heard that zeiss 50mm sonnar can cover 4433 sensor, so maybe it does have less cat eyes but this example didnt really show that.

Sorry, but I don't really want to talk about cat's eyes anymore. Here is an example of the glorified Apo Lantahar, which has a perfectly circular aperture in several positions. The result can be really uninteresting. Sony 7RM2.

Love it. One can get that 35/1.4 Classic look at longer distance.

After seeing those photos, I was just about to ask why it's not called 50mm Nokton Classic .

This last picture has to be an EFCS effect right? If not I don't understand how specular discs aren't symmetric radial to the optical axis, if you understand me. The optical properties in the frame should be radially symmetric with respect to the centre of the frame, so how do the bokeh balls "know" to have their bottoms cut off both on the top and bottom part of the frame. Has to be a shutter effect like EFCS.

Yes, EFCS "on" for sure which means it was probably adapted to a mirrorless camera like Sony instead of using it on a Leica body. Leica cameras do not offer the EFCS option, not even the SL series.

I don't see any LoCA, which is surprising.

They seem to be taken with A73:

I also noticed this and am also surprised, I suspect the lens is not truly up to APO standards, but it may produce images without bothersome color fringing.

I understand the interest in bokeh. But my curiosity is about its portrayal in focus. I await the reviews.

A lens can be well corrected for axial CA but under corrected for other aberrations.. it looks to be the case here.
Can’t wait to compare it to the Zeus 50 f1.5 Classic.

the zm 50/1.5 sonnar does not have traditionally good bokeh, but it also does not have cat's eye bokeh, it has open U shaped bokeh bubbles that open towards the edges on FF:

this can be nicer than cat's eye, especially stopped down to f/2 for many people.

Thanks! I have a workday tomorrow (teleworking from home) but hopefully I can take a longer lunch break and shoot some first samples then as long as the lens has arrived Tomorrow's weather forecast is promising some sunshine and 29 C whereas most days have been rainy and/or cloudy recently. I'll have more time to shoot over the weekend.

I received my CV Heliar classic 50/1.5 this afternoon. I had hoped it would arrive in the morning but it took longer in the delivery truck (couldn't request specific delivery time when I pre-ordered so early). I didn't have a lot of time to shoot today but I did a little walk in the late afternoon with it and I shot various random stuff around Ebisu (in Tokyo) mostly wide open with my Sony A7C. A small number of longer distance shots were stopped down to anything between f4-f8. I used silent/electronic shutter all the time. I like it so far especially for the wide open / close distance shots. There seemed to be a bit more noticeable field curvature than e.g. with CV Nokton 50/1.5 VM II or CV Heliar classic 50/2 when shooting stopped down at "infinity" on my A7C. Need to spend more time to learn more how everything works. Handling felt excellent.

Here are some SOOC JPEG samples:

Thanks for the samples Juha! I like the way it draws with that SA glow at close distance and eccentric bokeh. It's everything I thought it would be.
I wonder if that field curvature is only exaggerated on the thicker sensor stack body or if it's also a characteristic of the lens. I will find out soon when my copy arrives. I'm plaining on comparing it to the Zeiss 50/1.5 Sonnar, Voigtlander 50/1.2 Nokton and Leica 50/1.4 Lux.
