Not to be confused with the current Voigtlander "Nokton" 50mm f/1.5 Aspherical II reviewed here:
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1669693

The new 50mm f/1.5 lens reference above will be a "Heliar" design.

Interesting, anxious to get a look at it, and learn of its performance....

I don't get what they are thinking here. There are plenty of 50mm options already. How about a small 180mm/200mm or 300mm prime. Why not fill a hole?

I don't really have a lot of input thats worthy because I don't own any of their glass, but my immediate thought was the same. Another 50mm? I was curious so I just looked, and as an example B&H currently has 9 different VL 50mm options. A couple of them are finish options but it sure seems to be a very complete selection. I guess the demand must be there, and I like to see the great options so there is that.

A lot of those on your link are the same lens though. Just different styling.
I agree though. Too many 50mm lenses. Time for compact 90mm, 135mm, 200mm.

p.1 #7 · Official: Voigtlander Heliar Classic 50mm F1.5 VM

A Classic Heliar design is 5 elements in 3 groups. Back in about 2010, Cosina Voigtlander made a 50mm f/2.0 Classic Heliar with 5 elements in 3 groups by using some very special glass. Typically, it is difficult to press the Heliar design beyond f/3.5. I suspect this new design will use newer, special glass and perhaps some aspherical surfaces. I also suspect it will involve more than 5 elements - but maybe not many more. In any case, it could be a very unique design. I am curious, very curious.

That f/2.0 50mm Heliar never quite developed the prestige of the f/3.5 Classic. But I personally chose it over the Leica 50mm Summicron after using and comparing both in many situations. I am a Classic Heliar fan.

Maybe they have had enough of issuing high profile lenses and the aggravation that goes with that, it would be understandable. Back to basics, shrinking their profile with the great designs of yesteryear that only a few aficionado enthusiasts care for, that might be their message here.

The tiny 50/3.5 always has it small corner in my lens bag. Modern glass is a given here, the 50/2 was the 5/3 design from my reading. If so, an extra stop is within easy reach today.

I'm not sure there would be much of a market for a manual focus 200mm lens anymore, seems like that would be one area where AF would be much preferred

There are alot of people that have 2 kits (manual and AF). But your right. With only 10 + options for a 50mm in M mount why not use those resources for another 50

I'm not saying they should be focused on another 50, just that the proposed alternative of developing a 200mm manual focus lens seems like the wrong place to focus...how about a nice fast-ish small 24/25mm? How about a compact high quality 90? how about reviving the Bessa film camera line (they have a lot of VM lenses in circulation whose owners could use with film)? how about nice small 18mm VM lens?

My point was not it has to be 200. I threw those numbers out just as an example. The point was there are plenty of other lenses that could be made and be more profitable then another 50. If it's 90, 135, 150 , 180, 200 etc... whatever would be more welcome than another 50. I mean seriously if someone can't find a 50mm they like at this point than I don't even know what to say about that. Resource management is what I'm questioning here at CV. Like I said, fill a hole.

It was released in 2006 (as limited release). I have one (in black) as well and quite like it. I think it's designated classic because wide open at f2 it's stretching the classic Heliar design and comes with a rather strong character (I like it a lot wide open too) but stopped down it's pretty normal and a strong performer. I wish it focused closer than 1m and I suppose the new version will.

The old version can be found here on page 6:

I once made a little impressions post about the old version here:

I like the way it looks Might have to buy one since I'm a fan of the older version and as well as the 50/3.5 Heliar, although I have so many 50mm rangefinder lenses already...

It looks a bit longer than the Nokton version and the filter thread is also wider than 43mm. Perhaps 46mm?

If the picture is real, that is going to look awesome on a10-R black paint with the cross hatch focus ring pattern.

Well aware of what a VM is. I could care less about Leica. I'm talking about spending resources on a much larger market like Sony (this is a Sony forum not Leica) where they would make sense and sell many more than this lens.

Yeah, but don't you think those lenses would be Sony E mount lenses and not VM lenses? A VM lens is for Leica M and that long of lens doesn't really make sense for Leica M. If Voigtlander were to make a 180/200mm or 300mm I would think they would make it for Sony E mount and not for Leica M. Simply put even another 50mm lens probably makes a lot more sense for Lecia M than long lenses that are not well suited for the Leica M camera.
